In the family history, by Lillian May Briggs, she said his birth place was
"probably Halifax, Yorkshire, England". However, in a letter dated 19 Jan
1976 (about 13 years after the history was written) to Lillian from Doris F.
Bolstridge (Neaman), Doris writes: "John was horn in Manchester, but I have
not found which parish --- there are so many in that big city." See notes for
his wife, Elizabeth Fuller, also.

This is taken from a letter from Doris F. Bolstridge (Neaman) to Lillian May
Briggs, dated 19 Jan 1976:
"Did I tell you I found John Cordingly and Elizabeth (Fuller) Cordingly on the
1851 census of Manchester (St. George District)? I was very surprised to learn
that she was born in Dublin, Ireland. The day that the census was taken shse
had two visitors by the name of Fuller from Dublin too. Irish records are very
difficult before 1864. John was born in Manchester, but I have not found which
parish --- there are many in that big city."

There are many interesting personal papers of Rev. John Gosman in the Senate
House Museum at Kingston, N.Y.
The Rev. John Gosman graduated Columbia College, 1801 and studied theology
under Proudfit and Dr. Mason. He was a minister from 1804 to 1865. He was
also trustee of Rutgers College 1825-65. An Honorary D. D. was conferred by
Rutgers College in 1833. He was elected President of the Board of Trustees of
Kingston Academy 1812. (Ref: Rutger's University Records).
He is interred in the cemetaph of the First Reformed Dutch Church in Kingston,
N.Y., beside his wife. The cemetaph is at the corner of the front churchyard.
The momument erected by the consistory and members of that church will bear
witness in future times to the memory of Rev. John Gosman D.D. who for 27 years
(1808-1835) was the beloved pastor. (ref: "Manual of the Reformed Church in
America", pg. 286 & 287).
At the corner of Wall and Main Streets is a cemetaph to the memory of Rev. John
Gosman, D.D. one of the most eminent Divines of the Dutch
Denomination.
Considerable documentation
on him is contained within the Gosman family history by Lillian May Briggs.
