Father:James Gosman Mother:Margaret Wright Birth: 14 JAN 1756 Edinburgh,,Scotland
Death: 10 JAN 1841 Stuyvesant,Columbia Co.,New York
Burial: Stuyvesant,Columbia Co.,New York
Notes:
Robert Gosman was a master builder in New York City.
The death of his first wife during the birth of their second son, John, left
Robert with the sole care of two children under three years of age and the
following may 9th, 1785 he again married as he realized he needed a mother for
his two sons. Robert's second wife, Joanna Blake, he found to be a real
helpmate and loving wife and mother who gave fond care to all his seven
children.
Sometime soon after the beginning of the 1800s, Robert migrated with his family
to up-state New York and resided several years in Albany, N.Y. before settling
at Stuyvesant, Columbia County, N.Y., where he and his second wife died and
were laid to rest.
Family records state Robert Gosman has a pleasing fatherly personality and by
nature was philanthropic and definately a devout Christian of teh Protestant
faith. He donated the sum of $2,500 to Princeton Theological Seminary in 1824
to be used as a scholarship for his lineal descendants who desired to study
theology. In 1954, Lillian May Briggs Gosman received a letter from the
Seminary stating: "You are correct in understanding that the said Robert Gosman
left a scholarship fund of $2,500 to Princeton Seminary. The following is a
record which we have of the scholarship: The Gosman Scholarship, founded by
Robert Gosman, Esquire, of Upper Red Hook, New York in 1824. Conditions: The
donor retains during his natural life the right of appointing beneficiaries of
said scholarship. After the decease of the donor, the right of presentation
shall be vested in his two sons, Rev. John Gosman of Kingston NY and Jonathan
Gosman of Tompkins Co. N.Y., in joint trust with the Rev. Andrew N. Kittle of
Red Hook, N.Y. and the Rev. Peter S. Wynkoop of Gent, N.Y. and in the survivors
of them. And in case of their refusal or neglect the presentation shall be
vested in the Board of Directors of teh Seminary and afterwards it shall vest
in the said Board forever." [signed George Loos].
It is said that a portrait of Robert Gosman hangs in the Chapel of the
Princeton Theological Seminary.

Robert and his two brothers George and James came to America sometime between
1777 and 1780 according to tradition and worked for a builder in New York City.
Later George and Robert took over the business and James went to Kentucky.
Eventually, Robert settled in Ithaca, N.Y.

From "Genealogy of the Gosman Family and History of Some Lineal Families" by
Lillian May Briggs Gosman, Nov, 1963, page 1:
"GOSMAN is a Scotch name meaning the goose man, tender of geese by occupation.
The earliest known settlement was at Edinburgh, Scotland, tho 'tis said they
came from Norway with the Vikings at the time the Island invited aid of the
Norsemen to assist them in repelling invasion of the Picts. The name GOSMAN
was recorded in Ediburgh, Scotland 1539.
The prgenitors of the branch of the Gosman family of which I shall write were
genuine Scotch and was originally known in the very early years as GODSMAN.
The French branch has kept that name but the other branches thought the name
was sacriligeous and dropped the D. The German branch added an S instead of
the D --- Gossman; the Scotch branch left it as GOSMAN.
It has been impossible to trace the family all through the centuries that
have passed. Many interesting historical facts have not been recorded. It is
my intention in writing this lineage of the various descendants of my husband's
ancestors and collateral families to give reliable data upon which future
generations may base a complete history without the extensive research that has
been necessary in this work.
My earliest record is of James Gosman, born 1727 in Scotland, who died April
1, 1777 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was laid to rest in the Chapel of Ease in
Edinburgh, Scotland.

Paul R. Botts on 30 Mar 1995 communicated to me
that ["The Schoonmaker Family, Descendants of Henrick Jochemsz Schoonmaker,
1624-1682", by The Schoonmaker Family Association, Huguenot Historical Society,
P.O. Box 121, New Paltz, NY 12561] states that he was the son of the
progenitor, Henrick Jochemsz Schoonmaker, had two wives (Petronela Slight and
Antje Hussey), and among his children by the first were Elsie (Ellsje) and
Tryntje.
A letter (May 1995) from HJThayer also provided this info, along with marriage
dates and parentage for his spouses.
On 7 June 1663, in a surprise attack by indians on the settlements of Wiltwyck
and Hurly, he was captured by the indians at his uncle's house (Volchert
van Douw). He was 9 years old at the time, and was held for about 3 months
by the indians.
On 3 Jun 1694 he sponsored the baptism of Henrick Schoonmaker, son of Henrick
and Geertruy (DeWitt) Schoonmaker, along with Jannetje DeWitt. [Records of
