Happy
Birthday Slim - 16th
October 2001 |
|
|
(10/15/01,
5 p.m. ET) -- Even though he doesn't
turn 29 until tomorrow (October 17),
Eminem celebrated early and in style in
his hometown of Detroit on Saturday
(October 13). The evening started with
an Elton John concert at the city's Joe
Louis Arena, where the controversial
rapper--who was joined by John for a
performance of his hit "Stan"
at this year's Grammy Awards--visited
with the pop icon before the show, and
John reportedly presented him with a
case of champagne as a birthday present.
During the concert, John dedicated his
song "Rocket Man" to Eminem
anonymously ("You know who you
are," he said), while Eminem
watched along with Kid Rock and his
girlfriend, Pamela Anderson. Rock was
particularly animated at the show, often
standing to dance or sing along.
Neither John nor Rock attended a
surprise party for Eminem at the local
nightclub Pure following the concert,
but there was no shortage of revelers.
Guests included members of his hip-hop
group D12, fellow rapper Xzibit,
outfielder Bobby Higginson of the
Detroit Tigers, and actress Brittany
Murphy, who's co-starring in the
still-untitled Eminem film biography
that begins shooting this week in
Detroit.

The
Slim Shady Show on
Video! - 16th October
2001 |
|
|
Eminem's
shoddy, crude, but strangely endearing
web-cartoon The Slim Shady Show is to
receive a video and DVD release on
November 5th, PlayLouder is happy to
report.
Created by the Shady one himself, and
voiced by him also, the show was aired
in part during his Carling Weekend
shoes, and is available to view online
at www.slimshadyworld.com.
Previous episodes have featured the
savage beatings of Ben Affleck, Leonardo
DiCaprio and the South Park kids.

Eminem's
mother, Debbie Mathers, is once again
furious with her son. The reason this
time is that Kim Basinger is playing the
part of the mother of the
chainsaw-wielding rap star in his
upcoming film, The Untitled Detroit
Project. You would imagine that most
mothers would be flattered, but Debbie
is far from pleased, as she wanted to
appear in the film herself. Even
Eminem's grandmother, Betty, has decided
to get involved, saying of her daughter:
'She is furious. She's mad because she
wanted to play the part.'

Eminem
is Divorced - 15th
October 2001 |
|
|
Macomb
County Family Court Judge Donald G.
Miller made Eminem's divorce from his
wife Kimberley Mathers final on Friday.
He will pay $1000 a week in child
support. They will share physical and
legal custody of their five-year old
daughter, Hailie Jade. The couple
married in 1999 in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Eminem sought a divorce from Mathers in
August 2000, a month after her suicide
attempt the night his Up In Smoke Tour
played in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Mathers responded to Eminem's divorce
request by suing him for a share of
their joint estate an additional $10
million for the intentional infliction
of emotional distress through his songs
and onstage performances.
They dropped their divorce proceedings
in December but on March 1 Mathers filed
for divorce.

Eminem's
Movie Girlfriend - 15th
October 2001 |
|

Rising
starlet Brittany Murphy — whose
haunting Don't Say a Word catchphrase
"I'll never teh-ell" is
proving to be this year's "Show me
the money!" — is plenty
forthcoming when grilled about her
newest big-screen leading man,
controversial rapper Eminem. The
23-year-old actress recently met the
Real Slim Shady in preparation for her
role as his girlfriend in The Untitled
Detroit Project, an upcoming drama
loosely based on the Grammy winner's
life.
"He's great. I adore him so
far," Murphy gushes to TV Guide
Online. "He's a good person. He's
an honest person and he's funny and
talented — and really lovely to be
around."
That's all well and good, but can the
potty-mouthed lyricist cut it as a
thespian? The odds certainly are not in
his favor: When it comes to making the
jump from music to movies, for every
Will Smith, the pop culture landscape
seems to be littered with three Mariah
Carey's. But Murphy has little doubt
Eminem will triumph where so many others
have tumbled.
"He's an incredible actor,"
she proclaims. "You can quote me on
this: I think he's going to be
absolutely fantastic. He's been
incredible in rehearsals — better than
most actors that I've ever worked with.
More honest than most actors I've ever
worked with.
"He's a brilliant musician and I
believe that it's [all] the same
thing," she adds. "It all
comes from that source of energy."
Murphy knows from whence she speaks: In
her latest film, the Penny
Marshall-directed comedy Riding in Cars
with Boys (opening Oct. 19), the Edison,
N.J., native deftly belts out a
rendition of the Shirelles'
"Soldier Boy." Is the Clueless
star looking to do a little
genre-hopping herself? Winks the
up-and-coming chanteuse: "That's
definitely a future goal."

Kim
Basinger in Eminem Movie - 4th
October 2001 |
|
|
Oscar
winner Kim Basinger is negotiating to star as
Eminem's mother in a film loosely based on his
life.
In the still-untitled flick, slated to begin
shooting in Detroit later this month, Eminem
plays a character named Jimmy — a young man
who learns to express himself through music and
struggles to transcend his bleak circumstances
(i.e., the trailer parks of Michigan).
Brittany Murphy ("Girl, Interrupted")
and Mekhi Phifer ("Shaft") have been
cast as Jimmy's girlfriend and best friend,
respectively, according to a Universal Pictures
spokesperson. Eugene Byrd ("Whiteboys")
will play a black rapper named Wink, a role
originally written as a white character and
considered by Giovanni Ribisi.
Dr. Dre and Eminem are composing music for the
movie and its soundtrack. The picture is
expected to hit theaters next year
Basinger and the film's director, Curtis Hanson,
previously collaborated on 1998's "L.A.
Confidential." Her performance in that film
earned her a supporting actress Oscar, and
Hanson won for best adapted screenplay.

Oh
No... Not Another One! - 4th
October 2001 |
|
|
How
many times have you heard this rags-to-riches
story? Interscope Records CEO Jimmy Iovine is so
enthralled by a rapper's demo tape, he plays it
for arguably the best producer in the music
industry. The producer, who happens to have a
distribution deal with Interscope, teams with
Iovine to unleash the MC on the world.
Only one thing: The blue-chip wordsmith is
white. Once everyone hears his nimble wordplay
and sees his dementedly entertaining debut
video, they're so entranced by the cartoonish
goings-on, they don't even notice his skin
color.
On the strength of the hit "Ugly,"
Timbaland and his protégé Warren Anderson
Mathis, a.k.a. Bubba Sparxxx, have been living a
scenario that mirrors Dr. Dre and Eminem's
multiplatinum-plaque collection agency.
Tim and Bubba will soon hit the world with a
follow-up whammy. Bubba's next single will be
"Lovely," another maniacal dancefloor
call to arms. "We're gonna get a lot more
conceptual," Bubba said last month about
the admittedly "absurd" video that
will accompany it. "It's actually gonna be
like a story unfolding."
"He's got a little money in his pocket in
'Lovely,'" Timbaland added about the clip.
"Bubba's gonna take care of his mommy and
daddy, like he just won the lottery. 'Look, we
won the lottery and we having fun and we getting
some new clothes.'"
"Lovely" will be shot October 20-21 by
director Anthony Mandler.
"We're gonna get Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the
video," Bubba — whom his crew
affectionately calls "Andy" —
continued. "We're gonna get Scott Caan, who
played Tweeder in the movie 'Varsity Blues,' in
the video. It's gonna be crazy. This is the one
that's gonna really take it because I already
depicted the ugly side of what Bubba is. This is
his cool and more polished side."
Another thing you'll see in the video is Bubba's
signature bright Polo shirts, which are totally
en vogue in his adopted semirural hometown of
Athens, Georgia.
"This is Southern white boy Versace right
here, man," the 24-year-old said of the
gold and green Polo shirt he wore. "I'm
doin' it right now. Y'all thinking, like, 'Bubba
is just chilling. He's laid back today.' Nah,
I'll wear this to my wedding or something. I
look as good as I could possibly look. This is
just how we do it. A lot of people wear Polo,
but we really made it a lifestyle in Athens.
It's like you might miss a meal if you get some
money and go buy a Polo shirt instead. That
horse on the logo is just so Bubba."
Bubba's LP, Dark Days, Bright Nights, hits
shelves October 9 as the first release on
Timbaland's Beat Club imprint. If the husky MC's
assessment of the project is correct, he and
Timbo are going to be racking their brains for
video concepts for at least another year.
"We got seven bona-fide singles on the
album," Bubba said, "maybe 10. We
flirted with the idea of 'Bubba Talk' being the
first single."
"I'm gonna break it down," interjected
Timbaland, who produced six tracks on the album.
Organized Noise handled two tracks.
"The first line of 'Bubba Talk' says,
'Y'all don't know me at all/ I say the same
thing, but slower than y'all/ A little Southern
charm to top it off/ Okey-dokey, it's that Bubba
talk.' It's basically answering the same
question everyone asks: 'So what is
Bubba?'"
Answer: a hot commodity. The Dungeon Family and
Ruff Ryders have already scooped him up to
appear on their winter crew albums, and if
Noreaga gets his wish, Bubba will jump on a
"Grimey" remix.
"That lets me know that real recognizes
real," Bubba said of his newfound
popularity. "And that's what hip-hop is all
about: authenticity. Be truthful, tell your
story and do it in a creative way."
