People of the Wild North

My rescuers. Dan Blood (the tall one) and a Japanese assistant and interpreter (in the pinkish jacket), both working for the Bettles Lodge, were taking a couple of Japanese tourists down the Koyukuk River to the abandoned gold-mining town of Bettles when they saw me struggling to line my canoe up river toward Evansville (New Bettles). They picked me up, towed my canoe behind their powerful jet boat, and even gave me a tour of the ghost town.

Henry Nicoli, intensive care provider, took care of my split and bleeding fingers at the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center, the Athabaskan Indian clinic in Bettles.

Sourdough Outfitters provide tour services for those seeking the extreme in adventure. Owned and operated by (from right to left) Tom and Susan Holly, they are assisted by Julie.
