I dropped off my stuff in my room then went to Barb's room and did the crossword (from the past week) there while eating a slice of Kraft Cheese (yum). Barb was busy looking at horses on the net so I set up dinner arrangements with Ann and Mollie. At 6:15 we went off to dinner, and I was feeling a whole lot better by then. After that I don't think I did anything interesting necessarily, so I'll just stop.
4:49 Just found out that one of the two people to participate in the first officially sanctioned irish women's boxing match was Katie Taylor on October 31st, 2001. I'll have to tell her that someday. When I have more sleep.
17:25 Trivia sucks. I volunteered Mollie's computer for the team to use because she wasn't here, but that meant I had to unplug everything in her room and bring it downstairs. The reason I did that was because I thought she said we could use it, although I did realize that she would have meant we could use it in her room. I did take it back up to her room for her, but she got all upset (and understandably so) because she had to plug everything back in, got upset, and now I feel terrible. I did offer to plug in everything for her, but she was so irritated that I felt it was best that I leave, which she had asked me to do anyway. I was still depressed and in a funk about it, so I gave up trivia for a while to sit and ponder and just have some quiet time to myself.
29:03 Still haven't gone to bed yet. The team was down to Amanda and myself (yay Amanda) around 4 when Katie decided to go answer phones because they desperately needed people. At 5 we were rejoined by a nice boy, Alex. Some of the questions are nasty hard, and ones that can be found online are usually jammed as much as possible. But that's all right, we usually get through. And I must say, since I have to call in with two phones at the same time I sometimes get this stereo-effect when the phones ring, which is really really weird. Now they're announcing the drinks score and we got 3rd place out of 5. Not so bad, but kinda not the best. They said it was to 5-alive-ish
I would have to say that the funniest moment so far (or at least one of the top three) is when they wanted to know how to say "Train Station" in Russian, so I ran upstairs to Dimitry's room, woke him up at three AM and asked him, with no explaination, how to say it, then dashed downstairs and called it in (we got the point for it, too).
What else did I do today? Well, I got up at eleven and went to lunch with Mollie, then came back and attempted to locate the Find program-ish thing, with much help from Galen. Then I went off to class, where some people got into a heated discussion, but other than that it was a pretty normal class. Afterwards I went up to the ComSci proffesorial candidate's lecture. It was interesting enough, I suppose, but I wasn't all that excited about it. I did get to see Professor Hunsicker, though.
When the talk was over I called Barb and Mollie and got Barb, since Mollie was trapped in Science Hall all day. I arranged to meet Barb for dinner at 6 and just stayed in Briggs for the next half hour. We met up with Mollie and Damaris who had come earlier, and Matt, whom Barb had called. I had the soup (not so good), noodles (way too sweet) and salad (hard to ruin a make-yourself-salad). After dinner I walked back with Barb and then went to my room alone to work on my FS paper. At 8 I went downstairs for the Plantz Trivia Team meeting, where we arranged to use the lobby as our base and thought up clever names, not of which were quite good enough. WSS what the final result will be.
17:50 I was going to take a shower and then a nap today, but I felt so awake and happy and clean and perky after my shower that I decided to forgo the nap. Maybe in a bit I'll reconsider that, though. WSS. Right now I'm updating this (a much-needed chore, haven't done it in three days) and listening to music in hopes of filtering out some. I really need to filter the SM stuff, but that's hardest. Sigh. Nap later, I think, and free pizza and massage lessons at 8, followed by frisbee. Oh yeah, I still need to work on that page.
Managed to get out of bed at 9:30 this time, which is good. Got ready (as much as I needed to, not much) and made it to econ on time, which is happy. Econ itself was nothing special, price/quantity ratios and elasticity. Then I went to a Freshman Studies lecture with Ann. It was nice because the guy had the outline projected up on the screen, so all we had to do was copy those and not listen to the lecture so much. I found myself nodding off around 11:45, perked back up in the last 5-10 minutes for the pretty slide show he had prepared. He also mentioned the binocs that would be out tonight- I should go use them right before frisbee.
Well, since I didn't get called I really felt no incentive to get up and go to brunch, so I awoke of my own accord at 1. My room was nice and airy and lit, and my computer, having been on all night, had finished processing the songs I had requested. Of course, I'm a little concerned about all those songs taking up space on my computer (though I have a lot of space since there are no games here, but still... 1.7 GB from my SM songs is not good. Need to thin those out. But I digress.) Walked by Katja's room at 2 on my way to the bathroom, and it looked like a dank, dark cave. Ugh. I'm glad she's gone, and her bizarre sleeping habits with her. Actually, I'm mostly just glad her sleeping habits are gone.
What else did I do today...? Read a bunch of Siderius Nuncius, had canned spaghetti for lunch 'cause I missed brunch, and got more music (need to stop doing that- oh, and BTW, LotR the movie is on Morphius now. Personally, I'd rather see it in theaters, esp. since I've been told the quality sucks and it has weird subtitles in the pirated version.) Now Katie's bringing my laundry (that was nice, having her do my laundry for me and folding it. RA auctions are fun.) Later today I'm going to get my hair trimmed, and do more homework if I know what's good for me.
Listening to a band called Louise Attaque. They sing in French, but I SWEAR they're Canadian. Something about the accent, maybe... just doesn't sound "pure".
20:36 Went and got a haircut (trim) from Grace (for free, even) and gave her and Sandy the last of my unused hangers, and then went to dinner to meet Ann and Mollie. Since I was getting my hair cut I was late and they were half-finished when I arrived. They were kind enough to wait until I was finished to leave, though, so Mollie and I walked back to Plantz together. We went straight to the basement to watch The Simpsons, but since the Packers lost, the local Fox channel displayed the locker room conversations instead of Simpsons. So we channel surfed and watched the Nature Channel and the Crocodile Hunter on some other channel in the hopes that Simpsons would only be delayed, but no such luck. So at 7:30 everyone else went upstairs and I watched Malcom in the Middle.
When the show was over I went up to my room and read some Gallileo (I had read it during commercials while watching TV, too), had three mugs of tea and talked with Debbie what lives next door. She come by to ask if I had any incense, and to warn me that I was getting handcuffed with fuzzy handcuffs and dragged off to the Yuai meeting on Tuesday night. Interesting... But now I need to do some math.
25:17 I love talking with Allen in whatever form. He's always polite to me on the phone when I call out of the blue, and funny whenever I see him in person, and I always end up having interesting, though random conversations with him on IM. Once he told me, "Be funny." So I tried, and we had a rather long conversation based on that one command. Tonight he said, "Explain to me the wonders of the world that you have beheld," and I told him about the two wonders I had seen that I could think of at the moment, the way the sky looks at sunrise, and the Eiffel Tower, and explained them to him. Then I told him that airplanes were pretty wonderous, but that I assumed he knew how those worked and I didn't need to explain it. Which was true. As I said, an interesting, random conversation, and one of the reasons I like Allen so much. (But only one).
Orch concert in the evening, Katja moved out when I got back. Left the comp on all night, borrowed Barb's bedding, woke up to sunshine.
I got to econ just at 9:50, and almost as soon as I had sat down the instructor began. He talked for half the period about how increasing the cost of something somewhere means that more people will send their products to that place, increasing the supply and decreasing the cost, so it all works out. Then he spent the rest of the class period talking about how in 1973 Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE decided to cut oul production by 25% and how that affected prices, and what was done by the government to combat unnecessarily high gas prices. It was interesting, I suppose, but since it really kinda went against what he had been saying before I don't really get why he threw that in there now. Ah, well, I'm not the prof.
After econ I went to Freshman Studies where we had a pretty mundane talk about the discussion questions Professor Jordan had prepared (maybe I ought to start calling her Joy. I need someone in the math department I can relate to, and if I keep calling her that it sets up this sort of psychological barrier that I ought not to have there.) It only got kinda interesting in the last 10 minutes of class when Justine asked why everyone kept saying the creature was evil, when he hadn't done anything wrong, he was just the victim of circumstance. So I just had to mention that most societies do indeed consider triple homide as evil, and that some people were victims of circumstance that end up as multiple-murderers, while other people in the same circumstances... aren't. A couple other people added things in there, but I think the general consensus was that what the creature did was wrong, at least in some way.
After class I went off to lunch to try and make sense of the stuff Galen had told me the night before about the principle of mathematical induction. Oh, and also to eat lunch. I purposely didn't sit with anyone I knew (didn't even look for anyone, just sat down at an empty space), but halfway through the meal Mollie and Dameris, who had come in late, came by and sat with me. So much for that. They were mostly good about not talking to me and not distracting me, though, which was really nice of them. And I did end up getting it, about 10 minutes before class. So I hurried over to Briggs (where my classes are) and finished up the other three or so problems I had left. That left only one of the induction problems that I couldn't get, and I had half of it. I really couldn't figure out the rest, which was not so good, but that's the way it is. Nick and I had both spent about half an hour on the problem, and neither of us could figure out quite what was going on. Bloody inequalities.
Anyway, like I said I managed to get almost all of it done (except for that one problem) and turned it in along with everyone else, yay me for being a good little girl (even though I didn't get to bed until 3 last night, grr.) Then we spent class talking about theorems of operations and their proofs, which was necessary and made sense but not all that fun. Ah, well, they never promised that it was going to be fun. At least it was interesting.
After class was over (finally!) I felt so good because I knew that my math homework was done and I didn't have anything due until Friday and it just felt like such a relief to have all that behind me, at least temporarily. When I got back to my room I checked my messages and there was one from Conkey's saying that my books for Globalization were in, so I IM'd Mollie asking if she wanted to come with and she said sure, she needed a calandar anyway. So we walked down there, I picked up my book (only one, such a pity) and then she spent 20 minutes picking out a calandar. When she finished it was almost 4, so I hurried back to get to the library by 4 so I could tutor.
I managed to get through the first part of everything just fine, but then she hauled out this changing-parameter rate problem which was just nasty, and it took me a good 15 minutes to do, by which time it was 5. Still, I had already gotten it so she stuck around for the extra 15 minutes it would take to do the problem, only to find out that there was an extra 2 in the original thing we had used to do the proofs, so that was no good. Gah. I hate when that happens, and of course then the proof didn't work. But at least she has an idea of what to do and it's on the right track so she can do it herself at home.
When I finally got back to my room it was almost 5:30 so I read the comics and did yesterday's crossword puzzle (which I hadn't had time to do because of my massive math assignment), before heading off to dinner with Mollie and Ann at 6. Dinner was uneventful, nothing memorable was said (since I can't even remember it two hours later, it must not be memorable), and then I came back here. Had a blissful hour alone until the bitch came back and decided that for some reason, she was going to do homework here. Whyever she would do a thing like that, I don't know. Ah, well, it is technically her room as well, but when she makes me turn off my Sailor Moon music so she can do crap, that just irritates me. Someday I ought to decide just what it is about her that upsets me so.
Hmmm... debating whether or not I should go to Mollie's room to watch My Neighbor Totoro what I stole from Sam's closet (where it had been sitting for a year, I doubt he knows it's gone, unless it's something like a homemade porno that he just kept on that cassette figuring no one would ever watch it), sit here and try and find interesting things to do (like pray that webcomics have come back, all of which seemed to have decided on this week as the one to take off, whatever that's about) or play random games (except that I don't have any) or talk to random people (except that no one's on, except for Mollie who's in the bathroom at the moment). But I don't really want to leave, because I like my computer. My computer is my freind. My only friend. My... prescious. (HA HA HA HA HA, LOTR reference!) WSS what happens.
K, going to Mollie's room is a no-go because Mollie is leaving for LCF, which doesn't mean I can't watch the movie, it just means that I can't watch it with Mollie. But I bet Barb will be there, and maybe I can watch it with her. That would be fun, I think I suppose I guess if I have to might as well resign myself to doing so 'cause it's not that interesting around here.
Aside from the usual Katja-hating, I had a fairly good day. I got up at 12 for lunch, and only on our way there did I run into Ann, who had asked me where I was when we had econ that morning. Of course I had forgotten all about it the night before and so I hadn't even set my alarm. Oops. But she said we hadn't covered much important and I could just borrow my notes from her.
Lunch was middling-fair and then I took a shower and looked at my math (and Sailor Moon). Read a bit for Globalization, too, which I was proud of. Then I went to said class, which was interesting I suppose. Went to the library to study a bit, went to dinner, called Anna to ask about sororities for Mollie and then went to the physics lab to study.
I'm glad I went there. I feel like I got quite a bit accomplished. But not everything, and occasionally I would get frustrated, and not finish things. So I still need to do those. At 11 I went to Sage for a Bible Study for non-Christians, which was felt a little like an attempt to convert us but not overly so. It did take kind of a Christian approach to the Bible, but then, what was I expecting, really?
That got over at 12:30 (went longer than I had expected) and then I came back here. Katja was already asleep (of course- I don't know what prompted Housing to put us together) so I dropped my stuff off, grabbed my books and came down here, and now I will study.
Brunch w/Mollie (wake) and Ann, come back write Cheryl, lcf dodgeball, fold clothes, shower (borrow shampoo), nap (skip dinner), LOTR, comp
This next part makes sense to me and if I ever go back and type it up it'll make sense to you, too.
Got up, econ (bloody nose), print paper, FS (discuss w/quotes), lunch with Ann joined by Mollie (pregnant dream, moist password), back to room get math stuff go math, don't feel too behind but need to get cracking, after class go Conkey's with Ann, style and Pam present, then cafe, room distribute candy, job app, type/leech, crossword, dinner w/mollie ann erin, waiting guffman ann's room, trivial pursuit
After lunch I went back to my room and called Kaarina, wrote an e-mail to my grandmother and played around a bit. Then I went to class, which was interesting, but I need to reread my notes to remember what was said. Sigh. Since class at ended at 4:20, I just hung around upstairs for ten minutes till math tea started. Sat around there talking about math stuff, although I felt kind of out of place being only a freshman and not knowing as much about math as I thought, even though I'm advanced for my age. Left with everyone else after half an hour and went back to my room.
Almost as soon as I walked into the room the phone rang. It was Ann, asking when I wanted to go to dinner. I suggested 6, and with luck that means I'll have a half hour between dinner and the lecture in which to not be productive and feel guilty about it. Then there's that lecture, which lasts until who knows when, and then I'm going to a panhel pre-rush meeting with Mollie, have another half hour and then it's off to frisbee. Sigh. Busy day.
20:38 Just got back from the lecture. It was incredibly interesting. The speaker was the president of Howard-Scripps News Service, and is a Lawrence Alumni. He talked about how the media has been developing with technology, and what the implications are of that, both in terms of economics and militaristic consequences. Terribly engaging. Afterwards, Barbara (who I went to the lecture with, and is Slovakian by birth) spoke with the former LU professor for whom this lecture series is named, Professor Polovny. He was the president of Czechoslovakia for a time, and Barb was really thrilled to meet him. She spoke with him in Slovakian (or Czech, or maybe they're similar enough that it doesn't matter), and he asked where she was from and if there were any other Czech students here. Then he invited her out to lunch later this week. Imagine being invited to lunch by Jimmy Carter, having discovered that he used to work at the college you know attend. Interesting, non? Then we came back here and I typed this, and soon I shall be going off to a pre-rush meeting with Mollie.
24:02 Pre-rush thing was actually not horrid. Might even consider pledging (gasp!). Though I was talking to someone afterwards (a guy, non-greek) and he asked which I was thinking of, I said Thetas but didn't have a feel for them and he said Kappas have like 5 peeps, half go theta and the other half go to the dirty girls (delta gammas). So WSS, if those are my choices....
After the meeting I came back to my room and hung out until 10:30 when Katja returned, wanting to go to bed. Whatever that's about. So I left for frisbee. That was fun, I ran around a lot and did games and passing and stuff. Then I came back here and should in theory be working on my paper. In theory. Though, as you may note, I chose to update this instead.
Cole says he's willing to take me to see LOTR this weekend! I think I'm going to lose the bet anyway, but halfway there is something!
At 11:20 I went off to Lucinda's and waited a few minutes till Ann arrived, but it was no big deal because they hadn't opened yet anyway. We went in and had lunch (fairly decent today) and talked about Alyssa Tuma and people we had seen over break and other random things. Then we left, Ann for choir and me to Main Hall to pick up my Latin final (B+, pretty good). When I got back to Plantz I stopped in to say hi to Cole, then went to my room with the intention of actually studying. Unfortunately Katja was there so I just grabbed Frankenstein and went to Mollie's room. I hung out there till 2, grabbed my stuff and went to gov't class with Barbara. It was a lot more interesting than the econ class yesterday. 'Cept it means there's another class I have to go to, this time one I don't need to so I have no incentive, and I need to drop another $100 or so on books. Grrr. Oh well, it seems like a really good class. Lot of extra work for it, though. I guess I'll just have to make do.
After class I went back to Plantz because I had forgotten my drop-add form, picked that up and brought it back to where I had just had class (flighty me). Dropped that off and went back to my room, called Mollie to arrange to meet for dinner and took a nap.
Dinner was... amusing. Mollie was in a funk because she thought her elbow was dislocated and it wouldn't heal properly and she would never be able to row crew and and and... So we did random things to cheer her up, like break the bottom of the salt shaker in such a way that we made no mess, but the next person to pick it up sure as hell would. Random little things like that.
OMG!!! I just realized that I forgot Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book at home! Noooooo!!!
Anyway, where was I? Oh, yes. After dinenr we went back to our rooms and I actually read some econ, as well as screwed off for a long time. Ann called at some point and offered to wake me up, which I thought was really sweet of her. Soon now I shall go off to frisbee, which will make me proud of myself though not so pleased. Ah, well. I can endure the cold for a few minutes.
Bloody heck. Forgot to start my elvish lessons. Oh well, it's still today.
23:39 K, so that didn't happen. Too much walking around in the cold today. Learning Elvish in the lab downstairs, because Katja wanted to go to bed at 11:30. So I left and went downstairs. Also played 20 Questions with an "AI." It passed the time, at least, and 'twas fun as well, I suppose.
Ann came in and sat next to me
Sunday, January 6th
Didn't forget my plant. Got up at 10 and did not as much as I should have till 11, when I really began packing in earnest. Got to the HS only 5-10 minutes late, and the other two hadn't exactly been early themselves, since Zack's dad was still loading the van when we arrived. We piled all the stuff in and took off by 1. Got to Baldwin where we met Ned at about 2, had an uneventful rest of the trip (I read a bit of Frankenstein, but mostly I slept and/or daydreamed). Got back around 5:30, so Conkey's was closed and I couldn't get my books. Oh well. Mollie, Ann and I agreed to unpack and then meet for dinner at 6:30, but when we arrived we discovered the dining hall had already closed. :P So we went back to our rooms. I finished unpacking and rearranging, then hung out in Mollie's room for a while.
I actually managed to read most of Frankenstein in Mollie's room, and at some point I suggested we order pizza. So we did. Barb and Matt were also there and we chatted a whole lot. After we were done eating I gave up and, since Katja went to bed at 9 and implicitly asked me to turn off my computer and leave, I borrowed Barb's computer to read the SparkNotes for the rest of the book. Went to bed at 11:30 or so, but I tossed and turned for what seemed like two hours. Oh well.
Oh yes, and Ann called today, said we're meeting at 12:30 Sunday to leave for school. Should be there sometime around 6-7.
So... what I did today. Got up (late) and left for Rosedale about 10 minutes later. We so l33t! So Kejia went to work, and Jenny and I followed in her car. Except that we stopped at Schmidt Music so Jenny could get a tuner, and since we were there and he needed it I picked up some rosin for Peter. Then we went to Rosedale. Jenny followed me to Express where I got some $30 jeans that I can't get anywhere else ('cause no other Express seems to have jeans for less than $50), after which I left, saying I had to meet Dad at Waldenbooks since it was almost 11:30.
Having wandered around the store for half an hour, I finally decided to call home and see just what was going on. Sam answered and said that Dad had gone to the mall nearer our house instead of Rosedale, which he thought he had arranged to meet me at. However, I was pretty sure I had said the mall where I was. Slight miscommunication there. And the geography bee was that day, so he had to either go there or come pick me up, and he chose to go there (a descision which I agreed with). Only problem was, this left me there for an extra few hours. So I went to where Kejia was working and asked if I could store my sleeping bag with her for a while (oh yes, I had my sleeping bag and backpack with me this whole time), asked when she got off and then went to read for the hour she still had left to work. Good thing I had three books with me... At 1 I fetched my sleeping bag and accompanied Kejia to Victoria's Secret, where she had something she needed to get. So I followed her around that madhouse for half an hour, when I finally begged my leave, telling her I had been instructed to call dad by now.
As I was walking towards the phones, I saw Mollie coming up the stairs, shopping bags in her good hand, her damaged arm in a sling. I asked her for the story of what had happened to her, since all my sister had said was that her sister said Mollie had broken her arm.
25:34 Being sent off to bed soon. Found my glasses today, in the driveway, packed into the snow, having been run over several times. The frames were not damaged, however, nor was one of the lenses. The other lens is in three pieces which has been reassembled in the frame so that I can see clearly at long distances again. And I can mostly ignore the two large cracks, which is a good thing. Needs must call Nye's, Mollie's, my grandmother's and read Frankenstein tomorrow. WSS what happens.
