| AWARENESS
1. CONDITION WHITE: The mental state that too many people are in when they ride the subways and buses or walk the streets. It is the relaxed, easygoing state of woman when they stroll through deserted area's late at night, go to their cars in a parking lot, take the garbage out. It is the state of the unthinking businessman who stands at ease on a subway before some rat shoves him in the path of an oncoming train "for thrills".
When your in your house or apartment at night watching T.V. it's ok to be in condition white. As soon as you go outside, to work, shopping, ect., CONDITION WHITE becomes the wrong mental state to be in.
2. CONDITION YELLOW: This is the state called, " Relaxed Preparedness." It is the state in which you can not be surprised by someone walking up along side of you in the street, or anywhere else. It is the state that triggers your alertness when you precieve someone in the elevator before you walk in. The woman's salvation lies in CONDITION YELLOW because it readies her in case she must shift into CONDITION ORANGE.
3. CONDITION ORANGE: This is the state into which you shift when a stranger approaches you and appears belligerent. It is the ready to defend yourself state that you click into when, on a bus or train, a loudmouth elbows you and verbalizes a threat, but does not yet attack. It is the mental state you click into when your path is blocked. It is the mental state you go into when a motorist becomes verbally abusive because you stole his parking space, ect. At the first sign of overt violence, or an act of assult beginning to manifest against you, you are triggered into CONDITION RED.
4. CONDITION RED: Go' Move' Attack' Fight Now' - That is CONDITION RED. This is the action state. This is what happens when the verbal threat turns into a shoulder or wrist grab. When two people making obscene comments about you step forward and attempt physical contact. This is what happens when the verbal threat, " I'm going to blow your head off ", becomes a sudden reaching inside the threatners jacket. To go from CONDITION ORANGE to CONDITION RED requires only a split second. To go to RED from WHITE takes to long. That is why you must master the art of regulating you mental states.
That is why this color-coding is so helpful.
"FIRST THOUGHTS"
If you are approached, your first thoughts should be your own value and safety. No one has the right to physically and emotionally hassle you.
"BODY LANGUAGE"
If you walk as if your sorry for the space you take up, slouched body position, that makes you look as if you were embarrased. Work on straightening it out. Hold your head up, shoulders back and arms to the side - LOOK CONFIDENT.
"EYE CONTACT"
Look someone directly in the eye. If you don't, they may feel you are intimidated.
"TONE OF VOICE"
Start with a helpless voice, Use the same phrases over and over. " Will you leave me alone." I will start yelling if you don't leave." Gradually lower your pitch and increase it's volume. The ultimate will be when your natual voice is yelling - increasing your adrenalin.
"RANGE OF RAPE"
At one end, the man you know so well, takes a turn for the worse. The other end is the surprise attack, in the middle of the night, when your sleeping in your bed.
Understand you did not provoke the crime, you are it's victim ---- not all rape can be prevented.
For the most part were smaller then men are, we carry less weight and little muscle. We haven't been trained to fight. We are easily intimidated by physical violence. We've been culturally trained to cry and maybe scream, but not to hollar and yell. We don't even know the first rule of Self Defense ---- HOW TO GET AWAY.
