As she was walking home from the grocery store,
The sun hid behind a cloud and it began to pour.
Sally took a short cut through a vacant lot
Trying to get home with the groceries she had bought.

She could hear the rain but she heard no other sound
When suddenly Sally was thrown to the ground.
She saw a knife flash as she struggled to be free;
Sally froze on the spot as still as she could be.

After it was over she heard him run away.
She felt so violated she thought she'd die that day,
But Sally had a strong will and had to find a phone.
She didn't want to face what happened all alone.

Sally left her groceries scattered on the ground
She headed for the grocery store where a phone was found.
Though her hands were trembling, she did dial nine one one.
That was the beginning of days that were not fun.

Questions were embarrassing; she thought they'd never end.
Sometimes it seemed they thought her story was pretend.
"Are you sure of that?" and "Are you sure of this?"
"Are you positive the knife was truly his?"

Finally a man was found lurking near the lot.
Sally felt relieved for the right man had been caught.
Still it didn't end and the man got out of jail
Though she identified him, he got out on bail.

Weeks turned into months before it went to court.
Sally felt so lost; laws gave her no support.
Laws are written to protect those who do the crime.
If you read the papers, you read that all the time.

The man was protected; his life was still intact.
Sally, on the other hand, did not know how to act.
Going to the grocery store caused her lots of pain.
She no longer could enjoy walking in the rain.

After many months the date of trial came.
The way the trial ended was a shocking shame.
The man received probation and walks the street quite free.
While Sally lives her life with the fear from memory.
