Zoids where a line of toys produced by Tomy during the Eighties. Think model kits that moved. They were snap together battle machines shaped like dinosaurs, predators, and mythological beasts. The majority of the earlier Zoids were windup units that stood no more then four inches tall. Later, more elaborate units with battery powered motors and flashing lights appeared.
The Zoids were sold in a kit form with the various parts being on frames, as would be found in a normal model kit.
What was different about Zoids compared to a normal model kits? Firstly no glue was required to assemble the kit, instead the parts were held together by little grey rubber caps. The other difference was the fact that Zoids could move, by either a wind up motor or in the case of the larger Zoids by a battery motor.
Since the orignal release of Zoids back in the early Eighties, there have been many reincarnations of Zoids. In America around the mid Eighties the Zoids were called Robostrux These were recoloured and renamed versions of the original Zoids. Then in the mid Ninties in North America they were renamed Technozoids and in the U.K they were renamed a simple Zoids 2. Zoids 2 consisted of a number of the original Zoids which were recoloured and had a number of chromes parts, also Zoids 2 toys had no faction stickers like earlier releases. Below are a few images from the Zoids 2 line.
The latest chapter in the long history of Zoids has seen them returning to something resembling the original japanese format. Alot of the original names and designs have resurfaced giving a new generation of collectors a chance to enjoy Zoids as they were during the grand old days of Zoids.
