§D-Technology: Repulsorlift

REPULSORLIFT

Repulsorlifts are used on Landspeeders A repulsorlift is a type of antigravity engine that allows vehicles and vessels to push against gravity fields, providing flight. Efficient and inexpensive, repulsorlifts provide propulsion to a wide variety of craft -- from the tiny STAPs used by Trade Federation battle droids, to the immense sail barge employed by Jabba the Hutt. Certain models of droids use repulsorlifts instead of wheels or legs for locomotion. Repulsorlifts are so efficient that they are rarely ever shut off -- even when powered down, a landspeeder continues to hover off the ground.

Repulsorlifts need a large mass to push against in order to function; they are useless in zero-g environments. Starships employ repulsorlifts as a more efficient and cleaner means of propulsion when in an atmosphere. Repulsorlift technology is so widespread across the galaxy that most citizens take it for granted.

Popular manufacturers of repulsorlift vehicles include Ikas-Adnos, which makes speeder bikes; Mobquet, a maker of landspeeders; Aratech, a designer of military repulsorlift vehicles and Ubrikkian, which makes larger, more utilitarian craft.
