Nash in 2001
Owing to Dion Nash's back injury and uncertain future,
from the 2000-2001 season The Dion Nash Site has followed
Nash's domestic career. DNB = Did Not Bat. No bowling unless
indicated otherwise.
December 18-21, 2001
State Championship: Auckland v Otago at Dunedin
Auckland won by 171 runs
Nash 118; 18/6/57/0 (2nb); 11*; did not bowl
Nash received a 13-day suspension (December 22 - 3 January)
for swearing at an umpire and a batsman during this match.
Auckland cricket unsuccessfully appealed the sentence which
was at the upper end of penalties for such behaviour.
December 15, 2001
Nash was not considered for the First Test against Bangladesh,
however he may have recovered sufficiently to play Auckland's
game against Otago next week.
December 11, 2001
Nash is probably out of contention for First Test selection
because, although he has made a steady recovery from his injury,
he was not yet fit enough to play Auckland's tour match against
Bangladesh.
November 28, 2001
Nash says that he is making a steady recovery from his
muscle tear and intends to play for his club next weekend
and Auckland (v Bangladesh) from December 12-15. If he comes
through the Bangladesh match OK, Nash may be available for
the First Test against Bangladesh. More...
November 20, 2001
The latest word is that, due to his abdominal tear, Nash
will be unable to exercise for 2 weeks and unable to bowl
for 6-8 weeks. Concerned that he may not be able to play any
warm-up matches beforehand, Nash is therefore in doubt for
the one-dayers in Australia starting in January. In the interim,
he may play for Auckland as a batsman. More...
Also, Happy Birthday to Dion for today, although he would
no doubt rather be celebrating it in Australia.
November 13, 2001
Nash returns to New Zealand after a torn abdominal muscle
ruled him out of the remaining Tests in Australia. Nash hopes
to be fit for the two home Tests against Bangladesh in December
or else the one-day tri-series starting in Australia in January.
On a positive note, Nash says that his back is giving him
no trouble.
November 7-12, 2001
New Zealand v Australia at Brisbane
Match drawn
Nash 30/6/93/0 (1nb); 25*
Nash made his latest Test comeback following a year out of
the New Zealand Test squad with a back injury. Nash's first
ever Test series against Australia quickly came to an end,
however. Nash aggravated his abdominal injury while diving
full-stretch in the field on Day Two. He was subsequently
ruled out of the remainder of the Test series with a torn
abdominal muscle and will return to New Zealand once again.
Nonetheless, Nash played a vital role with the bat, guiding
New Zealand past the follow-on target.
November 6, 2001
Nash was passed fit after recovering sufficiently from
an abdominal strain and was named in the side to play the
First Test in Brisbane.
November 1 , 2001
Nash is being rested from New Zealand's 4-day match against
Queensland because of an abdominal strain. Coach Denis Aberhardt
has said that, while Dion "could have played at a pinch",
it was felt best to rest him. Aberhardt added that Nash has
already done enough to prove his fitness, so this will not
affect his Test selection chances.
October 26-28, 2001
New Zealand v QAS XI at Brisbane
Match drawn
Nash 21/1/81/1 (1nb); 0
October 21-23, 2001
Nash was rested for the drawn three-day match between
New Zealand and an ACT Invitation XI at Manuka Oval. Instead
he shared twelfth-man duties and bowled in the nets each day.
October 16-19, 2001
New Zealand v Queensland Second XI at Brisbane
Match drawn
Nash 0; 15/5/36/2 (1nb); 10*; 4/0/18/0
October 15, 2001
Nash is in Australia with the New Zealand Test squad.
He is thought to be fit and will play the first warm-up match.
If Nash experiences no discomfort, manager Jeff Crowe hopes
he will also play the following warm-up in Canberra.
October 5, 2001
Nash has been selected in the Test squad to tour Australia.
He must now win selection over the newer, younger players
who joined the team during New Zealand's injury crisis last
year. The Black Caps play their first warm-up in Brisbane
commencing October 15. The First Test will be played there
from November 8.
September 25, 2001
Nash has told New Zealand Cricket's selectors that his
back is ready for the next step in his comeback - Test cricket
- after playing the one-day tournament in Sri Lanka. He may
be considered for the Test series in Australia commencing
in November.
September 18, 2001
The PCB's attempts to organise a shortened, 7-ODI tour
by New Zealand seem increasingly optimistics as perceptions
of Pakistan's political situation worse; NZC has instead approached
the ACB for more warm-ups in Australia before the Tests commence.
The cancelled Pakistan series will force a selection re-think,
with suggestions that Chris Cairns and maybe even Nash may
re-join the Test side. Meanwhile Auckland coach Tony Sail
says that the decision is yet to be made whether the Aces
will use Nash in their four-day domestic games.
September 13, 2001
The one-day series in Pakistan has been cancelled and
the Black Caps are returning to New Zealand due to security
concerns in the wake of the terrorist attacks in New York
and Washington. Pakistan borders Afganistan, and may be affected
by any US retaliation against that country, suspected of involvement
in the attacks. If safety can be guaranteed in the near future,
a shortened tour might possibly take place. The Test series
that was to follow may also now be rethought.
September 12, 2001
The Black Caps are kept on-hold in Singapore for 48 hours
while the safety of continuing on to Pakistan for the planned
one-day series is assessed following major terrorist attacks
on the United States overninght. The tour may be postponed
or cancelled.
September 10, 2001
Nash was not considered for the three Tests against Pakistan
in October, as part of his carefully-managed return to international
cricket. Nash leaves tomorrow with the one-day side, however,
and may (hopefully) be available for the Australian tour in
November.
August 20 , 2001
Nash has been named in the one-day squad to contest three
games in Pakistan in September.
August 9 , 2001
Brooke Walker is chosen to replace Nash as Auckland Aces
captain for the coming season. Nash performed well after taking
over from Blair Pocock in early 2001, but Auckland coach and
selector Tony Sail anticipates that Nash will not be available
as consistently as the position demands due to his return
to international cricket.
August 2 , 2001
New Zealand v India at Colombo
India won by 7 wickets
Nash 0; 4/0/29/0
New Zealand missed out on a final spot.
July 31, 2001
New Zealand v Sri Lanka at Colombo
Sri Lanka won by 106 runs
Nash 6/0/36/0 (1w); 23 (NZ 9/115)
Believe it or not, Nash's 23 was the highest score of the
New Zealand innings - second only to extras (25)!
July 30, 2001
Nash has, reportedly, not experienced any trouble with
his back and may play tomorrow's game.
July 26, 2001
New Zealand v India at Colombo
New Zealand won by 67 runs
Nash 42 (NZ 200); 7.4/0/25/1
Man of the match: Dion Nash
Nash's 42, batting at number 8, is his highest score in one-day
internationals and the highest score of the match.
July 25, 2001
Nash, who was never expected to play both of New Zealand's
back-to-back games against Sri Lanka then India, will probably
miss today's match as he is suffering from food poisoning.
July 20, 2001
New Zealand v India at Colombo
New Zealand won by 84 runs
Nash 5, 6/0/13/3
Nash came back with a bang in his international comeback match.
He ripped the middle out of the India batting, in the process
claiming his career second-best bowling figures and the best
figures of the New Zealand bowlers. Nash reportedly felt no
ill-effects after bowling in this game.
July 18, 2001
Nash rests for the opening match between New Zealand and Sri
Lanka, targetting the game against India on July 20 for his
ODI comeback. Team manager Jeff Crowe states that there is
"nothing sinister" about Nash missing the game as
part of a cautious, managed approach to his comeback.
July 16, 2001
New Zealand v Sri Lanka A at Colombo
New Zealand won by 165 runs
Nash 12*, 5/0/19/1 (1w, 1nb)
Nash also took 3 catches.
July 13, 2001
The Black Caps arrive in Sri Lanka for a tri-series marking
Dion Nash's return almost a year after he last played for
New Zealand. However coach David Trist suggests that Nash
is still not fully fit and his participation a day-by-day
prospect.
July 6, 2001
Dion Nash is announced as Auckland representative in the newly-formed
New Zealand first class cricket player's association.
June 14 , 2001
Dion Nash is named in New Zealand's squad of 14 for Sri Lanka
in July. Though only currently bowling at 80% intensity, the
selectors anticipate improvement before the Black Caps' first
game on July 18. Nash is expected to contribute as a "bowler
and middle-order batsman". The triangular one-day tournament
is considered the ideal format to assess whether Nash's back
can withstand the rigours of international cricket. More...
May 30, 2001
New Zealand Cricket's medical team declare Nash available
for selection for the July tri-series between New Zealand,
India and Sri Lanka. If selected, he will have to pass a series
of stringent fitness Tests. More...
May 2001
Nash makes official his decision to have one last try at an
international comeback. He is reported to be in a better state
of fitness than before his ill-fated "comeback"
in Zimbabwe last year, and has been bowling at a low level.
If Nash is happy with his own progress, his comeback will
be carefully managed with New Zealand's tour to Australia
at the end of the year a major "carrot". More...
April 2001
Nash's beard-thing confirmed! Thanks to Lisa for the evidence.
(Obviously I'm really short on news here!)
March 14
According to Chris Cairns, Dion Nash "is going to give
it one last shot to try to come back", hopefully for
the tour to Australia, where he has never played a Test.

February 6-9
Shell Trophy: Auckland v Otago at Dunedin
Match Drawn (Otago won 1st innings)
Nash (c) 0, did not bowl, 14, 4/2/8/1

an international return.

Shell Trophy: Auckland v Central Districts at Palmerston North
Auckland won by 8 wickets
Nash (c) 4/0/14/0, 64, 7/3/16/3, DNB

victory with two days to spare. The game also marked his return
to first class bowling, taking 3 wickets at medium pace.
January 31
Nash takes over the Auckland captaincy from Blair Pocock for
the remainder of the Shell Trophy. The decision seemed inevitable.
January 28
North Island Selection XI v Sri Lanka at New Plymouth
North Island Selection XI won by 28 runs
Nash (c) 45
Nash's captaincy was a matter of selection, rather than injury
to Blair Pocock!
January 26
Nash was reported to have been bowling at practice sessions,
with a return to first-class bowling possible in the near
future, however he is not getting his hopes up yet. More...

Nash stood in as captain for days 3 and 4 as Pocock was injured.
(This was the Trophy match I went to - and I don't believe
Dion hit the ball he was given out to!)
