Carter postpones his vacation until all his men pass their Private First Class exams. Gomer is the only one to fail.

Sqt. Carter wants to go on a vacation to Hawii with 100% of his men passing the test to become PFC. The problem is, Gomer is content being a private, and is not interested in the test. He falls asleep during his second attempt. Gomer then learns of Sqt.Carter's plans to go to Hawii, mistakenly thinking he is transferring because Gomer failed his test. Gomer then takes the test a third time and passes. This is a cleverly plotted episode, because Gomer's misunderstanding causes Sqt. Carter's vacation papers to be torn up! Classic reaction from Sqt. Carter. Perhaps the funniest scene was when Gomer, taking the third test, reached in his pocket to look at something, appearing to look at "cheat notes". Then Gomer revealed a picture of Sqt. Carter, his inspiration for passing the test. There were also a couple of well timed "surprise, surprise, surprise" lines to make this episode funny also.

Global rating: 7.9

Gomer is asked to be the best man at his friend's wedding. The night before the ceremony, he loses the ring.

Gomer and his friend Pvt. Purcell keep losing Purcell's wedding ring. Mildly funny scenes, as one can identify with the panic of loosing something important. Gomer figures he lost it while making Bread, so he thinks it must be in one of 600 loafs of Bread! Both Sqt.Hacker and Sgt.Carter are not sympathetic, yelling "out" to Gomer and Purcell. Sgt.Carter reconsiders, and decides to help out. A mine detector is used, but the ring is not in any of the loafs. It detects the ring in Gomer's pocket, as Gomer then remembers he used his hanky to wipe off bread dough, and so the ring must have come off in the hanky. At the Wedding, Best Man Gomer can't get the ring off his finger.

Sgt.Carter wants to go out with his girlfriend Bunny, who he hasn't seen in a month. Bunny wants it to be a double date. Bunny lies that Eileen is a society girl, and Sgt. Carter lies that Gomer is an oil millionaire. Gomer and Eileen are awkward together. Good scenes as they all go to a restraunt, and the always cheap Sgt. Carter is concerned about the prices. Gomer, supposedly a millionaire, goes on about about how there was a charge of $5 dollars just to sit down. Gomer and Eileen find out the truth, and are relieved that they're not rich. Sgt. Carter finally gets Bunny alone. But since Gomer found out they lied, he comes out to the car saying to them "shame, shame, shame". Then Gomer leaves them alone, as they argue.

Gomer finds shelter for a family of hillbillies in a shack, not aware that the shack is the target of war games.

Gomer comes across a broken down vehicle and meets a family traveling cross country to start a new life in Oregon. Down on their luck, Gomer offers to help. They have no place to stay, so Gomer moves them into a shack which just happens to be the target of a war games exercise. Gomer is assigned the Bazooka in said war games and is surprised when told to fire upon the house in which the family is shacked. Needless to say, Gomer tries to balance the situation and talk the family out while not revealing what he did to Carter. The scene where Gomer blows up the vehicle he offered to fix with the Bazooka is noteworthy.

35. Gomer Untrains a Dog

First aired: 10/15/1965
Writer: Jack Elinson  Director: Coby Ruskin
Guest star: Fred Holliday (Lt. Fredericks), Sandy Kenyon (Army Sergeant), Paul Trinka (Buck Johnson)
Global rating: 7.6

Gomer is chosen as companion of a new sentry dog. Then he turns the guard dog into a pet.

Gomer volenteers to train an attack dog for a Marine exercise. He puts up his hand and waves it, as Sgt. Carter ignores him, then finally agrees to let Gomer train the dog. Funny scene as Gomer rambles on about how he has had 25 dogs, and tells about some of them. Gomer beat out a guy named Johnson, who had a rough theory on how to handle dogs, to train the dog. Sgt. Carter points out he normally would not pick Gomer, but likes Gomer's kinder approach to dogs. The dog had been named "Killer". Gomer gives the dog another name. Gomer talks to the dog, encouraging the dog. Gomer brings out the gentle side of the dog, as the dog does such things as lick Sgt. Carter's face, and lay down and yawn. The dog won't attack the "enemy" during the exercise, and the Officer suggests it be taken to the dog pound. Colonel Gray praises Gomer for uncovering the gentler side of the dog now instead of the enemy later, and suggests Gomer give the dog to another Colonel as a pet. This episode does not go for a lot of laughs. It is more focused on showing Gomer's wonderful kindness, as it shines through in this episode.

Things are looking good for Sgt. Carter, as Gomer organizes the supplies in three catagerories: animal, vegetable, and mineral. Then Gomer is overwhelmed by requests, as even his three catageries cause confusion. Sgt. Carter tries to give his check to Hank, who tells him to keep his check. Sgt. Gomer befriends a cat. Sgt. Carter orders Gomer to get rid of it, but kind hearted Gomer ends up taking it on the ship. Funny scene as Sgt. Carter asks Gomer why not just shoot him or push him overboard instead of this slow torture. The Chief Petty Officer warns that contraband will be thrown overboard. It turns out Sgt. Carter tries to save the cat also. Gomer reveals the cat is pregnant. The Chief Petty Officer shows a heart also, by not throwing the cat overboard. Funny scenes as Gomer embarasses Sgt. Global rating: 7.6

Gomer ruins a simple reconnaissance mission.

Funny opening scene as fellows are sick from being on the ship, and Gomer is cheerful, as he has a garlic pickle and rambles on how good they are for you. Col. Gray informs Sgt. Carter to take 3 men with him on a mission. Gomer volenteers, and Sgt. Carter ignores him. Gomer says "It just ain't fair." Funny scene as then Sgt. Carter is informed of another mission, where the other men will have to deal with explosives. If not done right, the ship could explode. Sgt. Carter decides to take Gomer with him on the mission Gomer volenteered for, since explosives are not involved. Gomer accidently sinks the raft a couple of times. Sgt. Carter keeps telling Pyle "don't talk".Then Sgt. Carter tries to leave without Gomer, and Gomer jumps into the raft, causing it to sink a third time! Hilarious! Sgt.Carter says "where did I fail." Gomer is taken off the mission. Then the Chief Petty Officer gives Gomer a message from the "high command." It is just a set up to send Gomer back to Sgt. Carter. When Sgt. Carter sends Pyle back, while swimming Gomer runs into the enemy submarine! So Gomer is the hero, after all.

40. Gomer the Star Witness

Writer: Art Baer, Ben Joelson  Director: Peter Baldwin
Guest star: Allison McKay (Waitress) , Willis Bouchey (Judge), William Newell (Bailiff), Michael Forest (Fred Cummins), Stacy Harris (Finley), Eddie Hanley (Process Server)
Global rating: 9.3

Gomer is the only witness to Carter's auto accident.

This episode is situation comedy at it's best. The opening scene is terriffic, as Gomer walks in on Sgt. Carter looking at himself in the mirror, which annoys Sgt. Carter. Gomer asks for a pass to go to a flower show. He gives him the pass, but when Gomer suggests that they go out together, reminding Sgt. Carter they have before, Sgt. Carter says they were "accidents of fate", and proceeds to chew out Gomer. The next scene has Gomer witessing a car crash between Sgt. Carter and a big guy named Fred. Sgt. Carter and Fred get into a shouting match. Fred calls him a loud mouth. Gomer tells Fred he seen the whole thing. Gomer is excited about the prospect of being a witness in court. Sgt. Carter learns Gomer saw the accident. Corp.Boyle warns Sgt. Carter that Gomer could get back at Sgt. Carter for chewing him out by not being a good witness for him in court. Sgt.Carter has Gomer over for dinner at Bunny's,as Sgt. Carter explains to her the importance of being nice to Gomer so he won't be a hostile witness. Bunny says "you know who's hostile, I'm hostile!" Great scene as Sgt. Carter gives Gomer a speech abount friendship, and Gomer explains that the only place a friendship doesn't count is in court, because you have to tell the truth. Sgt. Carter puts Gomer on the duty roster so he won't show up to court. Gomer arrives at court late because of the duty roster, as the judge also learns from Gomer that Sgt. Carter has been good to him lately, offering a furlow and having him over for dinner. As Gomer testifies, there is another great scene, as his testimony swings from favorable to Sgt. Carter, then not favorable to Sgt. Carter, as the camera shows the expressions of Sgt. Carter. The judge dismisses the case with a warning to Fred and Sgt. Carter. The final scene is Sgt. Carter getting in another accident, and Gomer saying "I seen the whole thing, I'll be your eye witness." I thought this was a great episode, in every aspect of situation comedy. I rate this episode as being in the top 10 of best Gomer Pyle episodes.

41. A Visit From Cousin Goober

Writer: Bill Idelson, Sam Bobrick  Director: Peter Baldwin

Goober pays Gomer a surprise visit.

The episode starts as Sgt. Carter yells at Gomer for such things as being late for roll call and not pressing his pants. He warns Gomer to "Watch It." Gomer's cousin Goober shows up at the barracks, telling Gomer that he quit his job at the filling station, that he wants to try the Marines. Gomer's buddies warn Gomer to get rid of the civilian, Goober. Goober is alone in the barracks wearing a Marine uniform with brown and white shoes and his hat flipped up, as two officers are stunned by the sight. Goober refers to himself as "Gomer". The officers take "Gomer" to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist tells Sgt. Carter that Gomer is unfit for the Marines. When Sgt. Carter tells Gomer he is leaving the Marines, Gomer stops protecting Goober and tells him about Goober. The psychiatrist tells Sgt. Carter he Thinks Goober is an imaginery friend of Gomer's who Gomer blames when things go wrong. This misunderstanding sets up some really fuunny scenes. Sgt. Carts finds Pyle outside of the barracks,as the psychiatrist finds "Pyle"(actually Goober)inside the baracks. The misunderstanding is cleared, and Sgt.Carter exclaims over and over "There is a Gober!". The psychiatrist thinks Sgt. Carter needs help. The final scene is hillarious. Goober sends Gomer a gift. A pair of brown and white shoes. Gomer, wearing his uniform in the barracks, puts them on. Sgt. Carter walks in. I thought this episode was cleverly plotted. Goober had funny lines as the misunderstanding unfolded.

Gomer is panicked and goes to the police station. He tells Officer Dugan that Sgt.Carter is going to "kill him dead". They finally find the car, in perfect condition. Great scene as an excited Gomer calls Duke to tell him the good news. The camera focuses on a steel ball high up at a construction site, as Gomer sees it fall right on the car, crushing it. Gomer is distraught. It turns out the construction company gives Sgt. Carter a new car. Funny scene as Gomer sees the new car and exclaims "Shazam", and Officer Dugan replies "I've never heard Shazam before, but I think he means he likes it". Sgt. Carter comes home with the AWOL Franklin, and Gomer shakes his hand and welcomes him home. Sgt. Carter explains Franlklin is not a war hero. Gomer tells Sgt. Carter his car was stolen, and tells the whole story. Sgt. Carter is happy, but lectures Gomer about leaving the car keys in the car. Franklin escapes from the handcuffs, as Sgt. Carter left the keys in the handcuffs. He is later found. I thought this was a classic episode.

Carter tells her if she wants to dance, go out with Fred Astaire. Gomer and Frankie see a sad Sgt. Carter sitting alone at a Cafe. Good scene as it apparent Sgt.Carter is not himself-he compliments Gomer and Frankie saying they deserve to go to a movie becaus they work hard.Gomer noticed Sgt. Carter's eyes were red and says there is nothind sadder then a Marine Sgt. who has been crying. A couple of misunderstandings follow. Gomer and Frankie take Bunny to see Sgt. Carter who is happy to see an old friend, who happens to be female. Bunny assumes he is having a good time without her, but as soon as his old friend leaves, Sgt. Carter is back to being depressed. Then Gomer and Frankie convince Sgt. Carter to go to Bunny's apartment so he can see how miserable she is without him. Her neighbor brings her loud party to Bunny's, and Sgt. Carter thinks Bunny is having fun without him. Throughout the episode a sad Sgt. Carter says "life is like a beer, nampkin, etc. Another misunderstanding happens when Sgt. Carter goes to a hotel to sleep. Gomer suspects Sgt. Carter may be wanting to do himself in. Sgt. Carter puts ear plugs in, and goes to sleep. This sets up a hilarious scene as Gomer, Frankie and Bunny rush to his hotel room. Sgt. Carter, with his ear plugs in, can't hear the knocking at the door. Gomer grabs an ax to smash the door down, and when they come in it appears to them Sgt. Carter is dead. Bunny leans over him, as Sgt. Carter opens his eyes and scares Bunny. Sgt. Funny scene as Gomer asks if there will be torture.Gomer tells Sgt. Carter he will know it's him by a call Gomer makes-hooty hoot. Sgt. Carter hears this call often. Sgt. Carter tries to get Gomer out of the way by giving him the wrong information so he will get captured. There are good twists along the way. Good scene as Gomer eats a big meal in exchange for giving information. Gomer thinks he gave the wrong information but it turns out to be the right information. Gomer escapes using a Navy commmanders uniform, and captures a platoon. Gomer and Sgt.Carter are praised. When Sgt. Carter orders him to take a furlough, Gomer becomes a civilian employee at the base.

This episode features an underlying endearing theme of the show. Despite all of the yelling Sgt. Carter has dished out to Gomer, and all the complainging of how his life would be better without Gomer in it,Sgt.Carter really cares about Gomer, and values their relationship. The episode starts with Sgt.Carter having beers with buddies at a club, and Gomer stops by, aggrevating Sgt. Carter by asking if he can switch bunks with Duke. At the barracks,Gomer continues to annoy Sgt.Carter, including loaning his rifle to a fellow marine. Funny scene as Sgt. Carter tells Gomer he is giving him a furlow because Gomer is tense. He gives him the furlough to get a break from Gomer. Gomer tells Sgt. Carter he does'nt want the furlough and does'nt feel tense. Sgt. Carter becomes increasingly tense yelling at Gomer that he is tense.Gomer finds out that during his furlough he can work as a civilian on the base. Hilarious scene as Sgt. Carter and Corp. Boyle are at a bar, and the bartender is Gomer, who says "surprise, surprise, surprise". Sgt. Carter's arm accidently causes the beer to spill on his uniform, and he proceeds to go on a verbal tirade against Gomer. Realizing Sgt.Carter does'nt want him around, Gomer seeks a transfer, which is evenually torn up by Sgt.Carter. Sgt. Carter realizes he will miss Pyle if he transfers, and informs Gomer he is staying. Gomer is all smiles. After another foul up, Sgt. Carter chews out Gomer, and all is well between the two men.

Gomer tries cheering up a depressed waitress, only to discover that she is the girlfriend of a tough Marine sergeant.

Gomer overhears a Seargent Henchley verbally abuse his girlfriend, Ginger, a waitress at a diner, about the food, etc. This sets up a very good episode. Gomer supports Ginger as a friend, and Ginger uses Gomer to make Sgt.Henchley jealous. Funny scene as Sgt. Henchley warns Sgt. Carter about one of his men in his platoon, and describes what Pyle looks like, and Sgt. Carter realizes it's Pyle. Sgt. Henchley does different displays of his strenth during the episode. Sgt. Carter warns Pyle to stay away from Ginger, but when Gomer gets to Sgt. Carter' ego by suggesting Sgt. Henchley is telling Sgt.Carter what to do, this sets up a good scene as Sgt. Carter tells Sgt. Henchley Pyle will see who he wants to see, etc. Alone with Pyle, Sgt. Carter still warns him to stay away from Ginger. Sgt. Henchley ends up demanding Pyle go out to an ally to fight, but Gomer gives him a speech instead about how unfair he is to Ginger. This sets up the best scene, a classic sitcom misunderstanding. Giner sent for an ambulance in case of troublle, and when Sgt. Carter and company see it, they asume Pyle got beat up by Sgt. Henchley. Thanks to Gomer, Sgt. Henchley and Ginger make up. Sgt. Carter challenges Sgt. Henchley to a fight, thinking he has beaten up Pyle. Sgt. Carter throws wild punches, and runs in to Sgt. Henchley's fist, hurting his nose. Duke and Frankie were planning on using the money for a fun night out, and are frustrated, leaving Gomer to deal with the phone company alone. Gomer keeps being directed to differnt windows at the phone company, and a Mr.Corbett thinks Gomer is a practical joker. Sgt.Carter advises Gomer to put the money back in the phone. As he tries this, a policeman thinks he is stealing the money. Really funny scene is next, as detectives interrogate Gomer. Gomer tells the truth, and they don't believe him. One of the dectives decribes what he thinks Gomer was thinking, that he woke up thinking "what am I doing here", suggesting Gomer wanted to steal money for a better life. Gomer replied he knew what he was doing here, he had two more years on his enlistment. Sgt. Carter tries to help Gomer, saying they are going to fight this, and for Gomer to trust him. The next scene shows Gomer in jail! Gomer gets out of trouble when Mr.Corbett backs up his story. He then lets Gomer's platoon use a pay phone in the barracks to make long distance calls, which, as Gomer points out, cost more than $41.75. I thought this was a very good episode. The theme of the episode was really good: Gomer does the right thing, and despite the adversity he dealt with, in the end honesty was the best policy.
