62. Crazy Legs Gomer

In four platoon contests Sgt Carter ends up losing bets to Sgt Hacker and buying $10.00 diners at the local café. Carter thinks he's going to win the next contest because one of his new recruits is a archery instructor...until Pyle opens up his big mouth to Hacker and ruins it. For the next contest, Carter finds Pyle can run a mile in 5 minutes and then tricks Hacker to pick Pyle; Hacker uses psychology so that Pyle will lose; Carter finds out and thinks he'll get rich by placing bets against Pyle; Pyle actually wins and both Sgts lose..Hacker has to pay for a $20.00 steak dinner and Carter loses his bets...!

Did You Know?
Private First Class Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors) runs a mile and a half in 9 minutes, shocking Gunnery Sergeant Carter (Frank Sutton) and Corporal Boyle (Roy Stuart) with his speed. Although not near world record time, this equates to running a six minute mile, plenty fast enough to obtain a perfect score on the running portion (3 miles in 18 minutes) of the Marine Corps Physical Fitness Test.

Carter bets Sgt. Hacker that he can't teach Gomer to cook a meal.

Sgt. Carter and Sgt. Hacker, the NCO in charge of the mess hall (played by veteran character acter Allan Melvin) get into another one of their arguments over who has the harder job. Carter ends up putting Hacker on the spot as he challenges him to have Pyle fix a meal for the troops. Hacker reluctantly agrees, as he and Carter have a bet going on whether Pyle will succeed or screw up. Pyle can't make heads or tails for the recipe for the scheduled fare (salmon croquettes) so he reverts to his roots- fixing good old-fashioned southern fare. including black-eyed peas and cherry cobbler. Meanwhile, Col. Gray informs Hacker that an important colonel will be visiting the base and he is the type who enjoys eating in the mess hall with the enlisted men. Gray has no knowledge that Pyle has been put in charge for the day and figures Hacker will do a good job with the salmon croquettes. Hacker finds out what Pyle did and tells Carter and also informs him about the visiting colonel. Hacker and Carter are freaking out thinking they'll get into big trouble if the visiting colonel hates the meal and Gray finds out what they did. After eating, the colonel states that he wishes to meet the person who prepared the food. Upon meeting Pyle, he states that it has been a long time since he enjoyed such good Southern fare- not since he a boy growing up in Georgia. Gray is perplexed as to why the meal was changed and Pyle informs him that he couldn't figures out the salmon croquettes recipe so he went with what he knew how to fix. The reactions of Carter and hacker are funny as the visiting colonel praises Pyle. Carter and Hacker are fun to watch together- they are always arguing and making bets against each other.

70. Marry Me, Marry Me

Did You Know?
The lawyer and doctor trying to fraudulently make money from the non-accident involving Gomer are called "shysters" when their scheme is uncovered. A Shyster is a slang word for someone who acts in a disreputable, unethical, or unscrupulous way, especially in the practice of law, sometimes also politics or business.

Unfortunately, Janet's dress accidentally get's torn and they all are arrested for disturbing the peace. Now they must find a way to explain ...

When Loo-Ann goes into the recording studio, the producer at the control board is "Mr. Linke". Mr. Linke is series co-owner, associate producer and Jim Nabors' manager, Richard O. Linke. Linke, who also was Andy Griffith's manager, was an executive with Capitol Records in the 1950's. Among his discoveries were Griffith and Nabors.
