New Series Performance 2003
      Just like for the last two years, I've put all the series through a fool-proof test of exactely how they measure up. FTL divides the viewers who watched the most recent original episode of the series by the in-season season premiere. Retention divides a series viewers average by the series that preceedes it and vs LS divides that viewers average by what aired in the timeslot last season. 100 is even in every category. A total of 300 would mean that the series is basically toeing the line from last season. Below- the series is not performing up to par. Above? A pleasant surprise.

Note: New series constitutes not onyl series that are new, but also series that were not on the air this time last season. IE- Extreme Makeover, Grounded For Life, Wanda At Large, ect.

So whose got the best crop of new shows? ABC, obviously. Thanks to new series opening up whole new timeslots (think Extreme Makeover & Hope & Faith), it's busted above 300 points in this department. The rest of the networks are down except the UPN, which is having luck with new comedies. As for NBC, think this is bad? Wait until "Friends" exits and it's left filling holes with new shows. Still, with only one network on the plus side of 300 points, most new shows are performing below (and sometimes well below) those of last season.
