The Winners:

CBS: In a season od widespread discontent, CBS is the only network that has managed to increase in viewers (+5%) on regular viewership. With almost every night clicking, the new shows have worked (look at "Joan Of Arcadia" & "Cold Case"), the moved series have prospered "ie- "JAG" & "King of Queens"), and Sundays are looking in good form once again. CBS is the network to beat.

Hope & Faith/Life With Bonnie: IABC had a strong lead-in last year with "America's Funniest Videos," but nothing at 9pm seemed to work. This duo changed all that this year, increasing the timeslot in the 60% range,

Charmed: Two seasons into a Sunday timeslot, "Charmed: is doing something that almost no other WB series is doing this season: increasing in viewers. And I'm not talking about a small jumo- it's up almost 20%.

ABC Newsmagazines:  It seems that every hot story, ABC has got. It's doing so well with its newsmagazines that every sinvgle on is up in some way, with "PrimeTime Thursday" leading the charge at a 21% increase in viewers. "20/20" is also up 13%.

CBS Sunday Movie:  Of all the returning series this season, the CBs Sunday Movie is up the most- an astonishing 31%. Why? Well, a better lead-in in "Cold Case" certainly helps, but these movies breed familiarity in their similar premises. If you get soembody to watch one week, they;re likely to tune back in the next because they're comfortable. CBS managed the same feat 6 seasons ago when it just couldn't lose with telefilms.

Extreme Makeover:  Last season, ABC was virtually declared dead on Thursdays with turkeys like "Dinotopia" and "Push, Nevada" eating up the airwaves. ABC went a bit more traditional this season in its programming and voila! Isntant ratings gratification. Well, at least it's better than last season. So far, "Makeover" is up 64% over what ABC aired in the slot last season.

King Of Queens:  Remember the old addage "never move an old show" ? Wednesdays spelled death fopr CBS's former hits, like "Murphy Brown" and "Chicago Hope," but this season, something finally clicked. Yes, "KOQ" is down from last season, but it's increased its timeslot by 38%, better by only two other series on network tv.

Smallville: Yes, you can look at the fact that "Smallville" is down 23% overall from last season's blazing start, but it is up 47% over "Dawsons Creek," the show it replaced. Thanks to that move, the WB has successfully recuisitated a droopy Wednesday line.

Whoppi:  Critics hate it, yes, but there's no denying that it has spark. Up 33% over "Just Shoot Me" last season, "Whoppi" is the one NBC sitcom that is actually showing some promise in the ratings. And it's not even in it's 8th season!

The OC:  While it's up a fifth in its timeslot, that's not the biggest achievement for this sudser. I knkew it was one of the fall's big winners when I was on the bus the other day and somebody said "But we're still going to OC tonight, right?" You know a show's arrived when you hear about it on the bus and the person talking about it isn't the crazy old lady who drools while she babbles. Hell, even my grandmother can't get enough of this show. Really. It's all she ever talk about, that and "Canadian Idol."
