Chapelwood United Methodist Church
The church library at Chapelwood had its beginnings many years ago when money was donated to buy books and build bookcases in a passageway alcove in the fellowship hall. Librarian Marguerite Brice accessioned the first book in 1960. Through the efforts of a library committee and a group of lay people, a dream was born that someday Chapelwood would have a well-located, highly visible center offering a wide range of books and media resources for the convenient use of church school teachers and the congregation.
That dream came true in January 1982, when the doors officially opened on the Pathfinders Memorial Resource Library. In the early 80s, during a drive to raise funds for an all-church building program, the Pathfinders Sunday School class chose the Resource Library as a special project and a memorial to class members, pledging funds and volunteers to nudge the dream into reality. Located at a busy intersection of church hallways, that library was an L-shaped room with special sections for children and youth and a comfortable reading area with a couch and wing chairs, offering something for everyone with more than 5,000 books.
In the late 90s, Chapelwood held another all-church building program, bringing us the current library, located in a main hallway on the first floor of the church. The library consists of two rooms and an office. The smaller room is the children’s library with books and video materials for ages 0-12, including small tables and chairs and a colorful rug and bean bags. The larger room contains books and materials for teens through adults with a comfortable seating area, as well as tables and chairs. All books are categorized using the Dewey decimal system. In 2001, we began using the library computer program Concourse to keep track of our materials, but we continued using cards for circulation. Later this year, electronic circulation will be added, and the catalog will be available on the church Web site.
In January 2004, a beloved pastor of Chapelwood, the Rev. Carey Sayers, passed away, and his personal library was donated to Chapelwood. At that time, the name of the library was changed to the Carey B. Sayers Memorial Library.
Two specially designed stained glass windows flank the entrance to the library, and another antique stained glass window hangs in the window of the library, all gifts from congregation members. The library currently contains more than 14,000 books and materials. Teams of volunteers keep the library in order, adding purchased and donated books, tracking circulation and sending notices. It is open every day except Saturday, with volunteers working on Monday and Wednesday mornings and Sundays. Self-checkout is available the rest of the time. Many of the volunteers have been working with librarians Dona Badgett and Marguerite Brice for many years, keeping the library relevant to the staff and congregation of Chapelwood. In addition to church staff and members, the library serves a day school, a sum-mer day camp, and the surrounding community.
