Parkgate Community Church The current Learning Resource Center at Parkgate Community Church started in the 1950s at Southmore Church of God on Southmore Street in Pasadena with a few books in the classroom off the temporary sanctuary. Later a sanctuary was built, the temporary building was made into a fellowship hall, and the books were stored in the attic. Then Nancy Brooks had two bookshelves and a small desk made for the narthex area. The books from the attic were retrieved and a self-checkout system was set up. For his Eagle Scout project, a Boy Scout helped with checking classification and getting things set up, and new books were added. In 1975, four ladies were sent to Dallas for a library workshop. They came home and were given the use of a Sunday School room in which to set up the library, along with housing Sunday school supplies and AV equipment. Mary Ellen Hicks was asked to be in charge of the LRC, along with several helpers. In August of 1995, the church relocated to Preston Road in Pasadena and was renamed Parkgate Community Church. The LRC is now also used as a Learning Hour classroom and meeting room. The Children’s Center uses it for Story Time and weekly chapel service. We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings!
