Tallowood Baptist Church

Tallowood Baptist Church had its beginning in 1952. It was in 1960 that Mary E. Wright began her efforts to organize a church library. The first year of the new library’s existence was supported by an annual budget from the church of $50.00. In those early days the collection was built up by church members giving books in honor or in memory of people they loved. This is still an ongoing practice.

The original home of the church library was a small room on the northwest corner of the Chapel. In 1965, the library was moved to the Chapel Annex. In 1969, the library was relocated to an old office reception area. In 1973, it moved again to the North Educational Building, where it is today. In 2011, the present library was redesigned by Joy Cryer to occupy three times the old space. She designed the area to be comfortable and inviting for children, youth and adults.

Mary Wright provided a good heritage. She not only was responsible for the library’s creation, but she also left an example for other people to follow, which was one of serving as a caring librarian. Joy Cryer became librarian in July 1999 and still serves along with many volunteers who help on a weekly basis. In 2015, Tallowood was selected as the Outstanding Congregational Library by the Church & Synagogue Library Association.

The library has been well served through its history by volunteer workers. Dedicated men and women have been the lifeblood of the library throughout its history.
