Cypress United Methodist Church - Winnie Mason Library
Organized in 1959, Cypress United Methodist Church showed an early interest in making books available to the congregation, but it was not until 1979 that a room was set aside as the library. The first books donated to the church were housed in a portable classroom building. Then they were moved to a closet in the narthex of the sanctuary. The books, prepared for circulation by volunteers headed by Nyla Atton, were available for checkout on a self-serve basis. In 1977, a “windfall” of books came to CUMC when a minister donated his personal library to the church. There were far too many books to fit into the closet. It was then that the church designated a room to house the library. The church received a donation of $1,500 for the purpose of building the shelves and furnishings. Holman Whitford, a church member, volunteered to do the construction. Sometime in 1979, when the room was ready, Winnie Mason, who had been named librarian, began to catalog the collection. Under the guidance of Carolyn Holt, a school librarian, and with the assistance of a committee of seven volunteers, the library became a reality. It opened its doors to the congregation in January of 1980 in a room just down the hall from the sanctuary.
Winnie Mason served as librarian until 1997. Jerrie Gallamore agreed at that time to take the position of librarian, bringing to the job her organizational skills and background as an English teacher familiar with the best books and media. Jerrie was our librarian until 2011, when she moved to Arkansas.
As our church grew and added new buildings, the library continued to grow and was moved to new locations. In 2002, our fourth move took us upstairs in the Wesley Building to spacious quarters which included an office and storage space. At this time we had new shelves installed and other attractive additions. On April 7, 2002, we had a formal dedication service, and the library was named for Winnie Mason, who had continued to work as a volunteer.
In February of 2010, the library was moved to its present location in rooms 111 and 112 of the Ministry Activity Center (MAC). When she moved away, Jerrie had left the active volunteers with an organized plan for continuing the work of the library. This arrangement kept us going, but we are glad and thankful that Sandra Rodriguez has accepted the position of librarian. We look forward to working with her.
It is our desire to serve the community as well as the membership of our church. We are glad that Wee Wuns, our preschool, comes to the library to hear Glenda Marshal read to them. During the school year, the Bridge Class comes to the library to check out books. We are also available to the older adults who come to the church on Thursdays for CAPS (Community Activities Program for Seniors). We hope to reach out to more neighbors beyond our doors.
