And with those other days come lots of other anglers looking for that big bite. Both of our area lakes saw their share of these over the weekend, and some were very successful. On Rayburn the fishing has been good with some big ones being brought in. There have not been reports of numbers of fish being caught, but when you are catching bass from five to eight pounds a piece, you don’t have to catch as many to feel like you are having a good trip! The Rat L Trap in red or orange color has been the best, along with a white 1/2 oz spinnerbait rigged with a gold willow- leaf blade. These fish are being found in three to six feet of water. A small crankbait has also been effecitve when worked in six to nine feet. I like a Bandit in red or brown crawfish color for this. You can also drag a Carolina rigged Reaction Wacky Fry in watermelon color. Try dipping the last 1/4 “ of the tail chartreuse and then work in nine to twelve feet of water.
On T-Bend fishing has been pretty good all over the lake, and you can throw just about anything you like and still catch fish. They are being caught from three foot of water all the way to twenty foot. A red Rat L Trap has been working well in the shallows, as well as the wacky worm in a watermelon or green pumpkin color. A white or chartreuse spinnerbait followed by a chartreuse trailer has also worked well here. For a little bit deeper bite, go to a crankbait and work it from six to nine feet of water on the edge of the grass in red or brown crawfish color, same as on Rayburn. Carolina rigs too have had some success with reports of a couple of fish over the ten pound mark coming off of them.
This week, we can look forward to having some of the top pros in the nation visit our area for some fishing. The BASS Masters are coming to compete on Big Sam, and the early scouting reports are very impressive! It a good chance for us to see what Rayburn holds in store for us this year! They will weigh in at Twin Dikes begining at 3:00 PM Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, so go on over and support them and the community.
Until then, you can probably catch me around the house some this week, being boatless for a short while, I guess that I can get caught up on the “honey do” list! Give me a call and we’ll talk fishing, or boats, at (409)579-4213, or send reports and comments by email to johnston@jas.net. Have a great week on the lakes and good luck to the BASS Masters this week.
