  • Is Teaching in Taiwan
    Right for You?

Are you the type of person
    who will do well overseas?

For many people, an overseas assignment may be one of the best experiences life has to offer. For a small minority, it can be the wrong choice.

For you, the difference may be determined by what is happening in your life right now, your interests and your personality.
In addition to be able to do their jobs well, people on an overseas assignment need to become competent in another area -
"Surviving and Thriving in a Cross Cultural Environment."

The following describes some of the most important qualities that make for success and satisfaction on an overseas teaching assignment, as well as some key questions for you to consider before accepting to Teach English in Taiwan.
    Welcome to Taiwan
Qualities For Successful Overseas Adjustment Include-
    • Cross Cultural Interests. - People who have diversity see cross cultural differences as interesting and challenging rather than negative, are more likely to succeed in Taiwan. People who truly are interested in Taiwan will find it much easier to adapt, make friends and settle into this new country.

    • A relaxed Attitude. - A relaxed attitude toward time pressures and minor hardships coupled with a high tolerance for frustration and ambiguity, on and off the job can help make the inevitable stresses of adjustment more quickly and smoothly.

    • Adaptability. - This resource is necessary at work, within the home and also within social activities.

    • Zest For The Unknown. - People who have openness to new experiences and have inquisitive, interested attitudes are the ones who will do well overseas.

    • Self-Sufficiency/Independence. - People who are able to find interests of their own, independent of outside stimuli, do better in the transient overseas environment. Those who depend to a large degree on TV, spectator sport, alcohol, a small group of close neighbours or extended family members often do not do well overseas.

    • Genuine Friendliness/Interest in Others- People who are really ready to trust, like and respect a broad range of people are a credit to their company and themselves.

    • Sense of Humour. -The ability to take work seriously and yourself lightly is essential in an overseas assignment. The ability to laugh at yourself, to keep the long-term perspective in sight, and not to become bogged down in day to day frustrations is critical.

Pre-departure preparation will often help with the transition. Plan to talk with people who have lived in Taiwan recently. Read books or magazine articles, both fiction and non-fiction, that can give you a "feel" for the country. If possible, go on a "look-see" visit before definitely deciding to move.
