The Money A teacher's pay rate usually starts at around NT$550 per hour. Most positions are hourly positions. You can find positions that pay around NT$600 - NT$700 but these are usually schools that do not provide work permits or resident visas so the extra money you make is usually spent on airfares to Hong Kong to obtain another 30-day visitor visa. It is illegal to work on a visitor visa. You can also find private students and ask up to or even just over NT$1000 per hour, but don't base your weekly/monthly income on these. |
Honestly, if a school offers less that NT$550 per hour, you should consider very carefully and if they cannot provide the legal documents you need to live and work in Taiwan, the risk is yours. I wouldn't do it. |
So What Can You Make? Working hours will vary at different schools. My clients offer 3 different teaching options. Please read more on these CONTRACT OPTIONS. Please see the table below to show monthly salaries based on these contract options. Teachers are usually paid monthly in Taiwan. |

The above figures are based on a teacher's base starting hourly rate. Teachers receive performance based pay raises every six months. There are also student return rate bonuses every three months based on the percentage of students returning to the next level. The table below shows a teacher's monthly salary broken into a weekly wage and converted into your currency. REMEMEBR this is weekly, but teachers are paid monthly, so times these figures by 4. |

Taxes You may hear many stories regarding taxes in Taiwan. Please look into this well during your research on coming to Taiwan. Basically, taxes are withheld at a 20% rate until a teacher has been in Taiwan for 183 days in a calendar year. After accumulating 183 days, the withholding tax rate drops to 10%. If an NST is in Taiwan for less than 183 days then no tax refund is given for that year. The tax rate for NSTs living in Taiwan for more than 183 days is 10%, and a tax refund is given accordingly. It is unfortunate if you decide to arrive in Taiwan after July as you will not be in Taiwan for 183 days during that year and then from January 1, the 183 days start again. But that is the tax law here. Check your own country's tax laws for foreign workers and they will have some similar law. The tax filing system is pretty similar to the Australian system. You get your tax certificate at the end of the finacial year, you complete the tax assessment form (a lot easier than the Australian Tax Pack), lodge your assessment form with the tax office and they will calculate whether a refund is due. It's that simple. I have had a refund every year I have been in Taiwan. I have always recieved a tax refund that has covered my airfare home each year. This year I got back NT$29000. IMPORTANT:Check with your own home country regarding taxes earned on foreign income. This is your responsibility. |

I will refer your details submitted to some of the well known schools in Taiwan. They will contact you in regards to available positions. The above requirements are the requirements set by the Taiwanese Bureau of Education in order to gain a work permit so to work legally in Taiwan. I cannot change these, so please don't ask me for exceptions. |
