CD or DVD?

A CD drive is faster than a DVD drive and a lot cheaper.  However, DVD drives work with all CDs and DVDs.

DVD Drives

All the aforementioned CD specifications apply for DVDs in addition to the following:

Generation The first generation DVD drives are equivalent to 8X CD-ROM drives.   The second generation drives are equivalent to 12X CD-ROM drives.  The first generation drives can not read CD-R discs.  So make sure to get a second generation DVD drive (also known as DVD-II).

DVD ROM lets you read DVDs on your computer.

DVD RW allows you to burn your own data or create a video on your desktop.
