Characters/ Episode guide

Episode 1: The Chill of Blue Eyes White Dragon
This episode introduces the series to the viewers. Almost all of the major characters are introduced. Yugi and Jounouchi are playing Duel Monsters at school, with Anzu and Honda watching on. After school, they decide to go to Yugi's house. Yugi says that he'll get his grandpa to show them a super-rare card. That comment catches Kaiba's ear. At Sugoroku's card store, Sugoroku shows them the Blue Eyes White Dragon card -- only four exist in the world. It is here when Kaiba comes into the store. Jounouchi offers to play Duel Monsters with him, but Kaiba's haughty attitude simply ticks Jounouchi off. Kaiba sees the Blue Eyes White Dragon, and offers a trunk case full of cards in a trade. Sugoroku turns it down, since he got the card from his best friend. Kaiba forces Sugoroku into a duel, but Yugi and company arrive too late. There, Kaiba tears up Sugoroku's Blue Eyes White Dragon. You can only put three of any card in a deck, so he doesn't want any opponent to have the fourth one. Sugoroku tells Yugi to duel, giving him his deck of cards. Yugi accepts. The battle takes place quickly, with one of Kaiba's Blue Eyes coming out and annihilating Yugi's monsters one after another. He plays the second Blue Eyes, but Yugi draws and plays the Sealing Swords of Light to buy some time. But there isn't much Yugi can do. Sugoroku comes to Yugi in a vision, and tells him the cards that are in his hand are pieces of a puzzle -- for the unrivaled summon of Exodia. As the duel progresses, Kaiba's third Blue Eyes comes out. In the end, Yugi draws the final piece for Exodia, completing the set of five, and winning the game. Cards introduced in this episode: Blue Eyes White Dragon, Dark Knight Gaia, Black Magician, Judge Man, Sealing Swords of Light, Dark Clown Master Sagi, Cyclops, Darkness Generator, Wall-Guardian Dragon, Exodia (all five parts). Quote from this episode: "Things that you truly treasure are given a heart." Episode 2: Illusionist No Face's Trap
Another game is being played at school again. This time, it's between Jounouchi and Anzu. Anzu wins handidly. jounouchi wonders who he can never win, when Yugi tells him that his deck needs to be composed of a combination of Monster and Magic cards. Jounouchi then begs Yugi to teach him. At Sugoroku's store, Sugoroku offers to start teaching Jounouchi. Some time later in the month, Yugi and company are watching the Japanese Duel Monsters tournament on television, which is between Insector Haga and Dinosaur Ryuzaki. Haga wins. At this time, Sugoroku gives Yugi a package that came. It has a video tape in it. Once played, Pegasus J. Crawford introduces himself, and uses the power of his Millennium Eye to freeze everyone but Yugi, so that they may play a game. The game will last for fifteen minutes. At the end of that time, the person with the higher Life Points will win. As the duel progresses, Yugi comes to the conclusion that Pegasus can read his mind. Yugi thinks he has the battle won, but a trick card from Pegasus take Yugi's Life Points to lower than his, and Pegasus wins. Yugi is going to refuse Pegasus' offer to be in the Duelist Kingdom tournament, when Pegasus steals Sugoroku's soul to force Yugi to come to the Duelist Kingdom. Yugi is in thought on the roof of the school. He has made up his mind to go to the Duelist Kingdom. At this time, Jounouchi gets a video tape from his sister. She wanted to send him a tape so that he wouldn't forget what she looked like. She wanted to see his face one last time. On his way home from school, Yugi finds an envelope with four special cards in it. The next day at school, Yugi and company are considering the cards. One indicates that there will be a large amount of prize money given to the winner. Jounouchi takes special interest in that card. Yugi finds Jounouchi on the roof of the school. Here, Yugi and Jounouchi have a talk about when they met. The next evening, Yugi makes his way to the meeting place to go to the Duelist Kingdom, which will be by boat. He's in line, when he sees Jounouchi getting into trouble when he tries to get into the ship. Even though he doesn't have any Star Chips, items which are needed for a person to enter the tournament, Yugi give him one so that he can get into the tournament. In another area, Anzu and Honda are trying to get onto the ship. On the boat, Yugi and Jounochi run into Mai Kujaku, Insector Haga and Dinosaur Ryuzaki. Later in that evening, Yugi and Jounouchi run into Haga. Haga wishes to see the Exodia cards that Yugi defeated Kaiba with, then he tosses them overboard. Jounouchi dives in after them, then Yugi follows. They are saved by Anzu and Honda. Jounouchi then tells them about his sister, and why he wants to go the Duelist Kingdom. Cards introduced in this episode: None. Quote from this episode: "You idiot! I'm not a guy!"

Episode 4: Insector Combo
Yugi and company arrive at the Duelist Kingdom, where Pegasus explains the rules of the tournament. In a duel, players will bet Star Chips. Those who have ten can get into Pegasus' castle. Those who lose all of their Star Chips will be expelled from the tournament. As the group walks, they finally find and confront Haga. Yugi and Haga begin their duel. Yugi tells Haga to bet two Star Chips. Even though Yugi has only one Star Chip, he bets his deck against Haga's other Chip. Early in the duel, Haga tries to surprise Yugi with a new rule that is used in the Kingdom, which increases a monster's power if they match the terrain. That proves fruitless, as Yugi already figured it out. However, he is surprised by the fact that monsters that match the terrain cancel out effects on those that don't match the terrain. Yugi has to wait for his chance, but at that time, Haga plays his deadliest combo, the Basic Insect Combo. Yugi can't attack, or he'll be destroyed by the combo. Eventually, Yugi places a card, and when Haga attacks, he activates the card, "Holy Barrier - Mirror Force", reflecting the attack back at all of Haga's monsters. Cards introduced in this episode: Killer Bee, Mammoth Skeleton, Hercules Beetle, Gremlin, Unicorn's Horn, Holy Barrier - Mirror Force, Griffol, Laser Cannon Armor. Quote from this episode: "I'll say it so even you can understand it! Haga, you're weak!"

Episode 5: Perfectly Evolved Great Moth
Yugi has just reflected back HAga's attack, destroying all of his monsters, and doing a lot of damage to his Life Points. Anzu and company remark that the game will be a piece of cake, but Mai steps in and states otherwise. Haga announces that he has a trump card that would be coming soon. Haga plays a monster, but Yugi doesn't attack, since Haga still has a placed card on the Field. Yugi then plays Monster Recall, bringing his monsters back to his hand, and shuffling them into his deck, giving him a new hand of five cards. He plays Kuribo and attacks, activating Haga's Parasite Worm, getting rid of it, but destroying the Kuribo in the process. Haga laughs, telling him that he it's all been according to plan. Haga plays the Evolutionary Cocoon card on his monster, the Larva Moth. Haga tells Yugi that the Perfectly Evolves Great Moth will appear in five turns, and will defeat him. Yugi tries to attack the Cocoon with Dark Knight Gaia, but with the Field Power Source, the Cocoon's defense strength is too high. Yugi plays another monster. The turns pass by, but taking a hint from Jounouchi, Yugi summons Curse of Dragon, and plays Scorched Earth to burn away the forest under the Cocoon, lowering the defense strength. Yugi attacks the Cocoon, but it's too late to stop the Great Moth from coming out. Haga's Great Moth flies, and just before it attacks, Yugi plays a card. Ruiz is destroyed, along with Dark Knight Gaia. Or so he thinks. Yugi played the Fusion card, combining Curse of Dragon and Dark Knight Gaia into Dragon Knight Gaia. Their attack strengths are equal at first, but Haga reveals that the attack of the Great Moth spreads poison pollen, which continually decreases Gaia's attack strength. Yugi plays the Demon Rain card to wash the pollen off, soaking all of the monsters in play. It's not enough, as the attack strength of Gaia is low enough for the Moth to destroy it. Yugi is left with very little LP. Yugi laughs, stating that Gaia was just bait. Yugi summons Demon Summon. Since the Demon has an electrical attack, and the Great Moth is soaked, the Demon's attack strength is increased. The Demon handidly toasts the Moth, and wins the match for Yugi. Haga is removed from the tournament, and Jounouchi takes Haga's duel glove. Mai challenges him, and everyone thinks he can't win, but Yugi gives him the thumbs up that he can. Jounouchi starts the battle with Mai, but her Harpy Lady proves to be too much a problem since it matches up with the mountains. Not only that, it can fly, which eliminates the Field Power Source on the enemy monsters when it attacks. Jounouchi's monster's are cut down, but with some words from Yugi, Jounouchi brings out the Baby Dragon. Mai plays Ten-Thousand Reflections, turning her Harpy Lady into three. Jounouchi finally draws the Time Magician card (NOTE: In the comic during this scene, Yugi uses the Millennium Puzzle to cheat, helping Jounouchi draw the card.), and uses it to turn the Baby Dragon into the Millennium Dragon. They find some fish cooking, but no one around. Jounouchi and Honda are about to snag it when Ryouta Kajiki pops up out of the water, demanding the fish back. Kajiki eventually realizes Yugi is there, and allows them to eat. When finished, as they are about to leave, Kajiki challenges Yugi to a duel, since he gave them food. Yugi accepts. Starting the duel on the sea, Yugi can't see the first monster that Kajiki has played, since it stays under the water. Yugi tries to attack in various ways, but is unable to, and succumbs to Kajiki's "Sea Stealth Attack." Yugi plays a Silver Fong, then the Full Moon card to enhance the monster. After chasing both the boy and the henchman to the departing boat, Yugi and company tell him that they'll track down the person who stole them. Yugi attacks with the Black Magician, destroying Blue Eyes. Before he has time to savor the victory, Kaiba brings out another Blue Eyes and destroys the Black Magician. Meanwhile, the real Kaiba has broken into the I^2 main computer, and finds that he has to help Yugi in order to save his own company. He begins to upload a virus to the Blue Eyes. The three people then make their way back to an area where none other than Bandit Keith is waiting for them. His goal is to make it into the Castle and pay Pegasus back for making a fool out of him. Their plan will be to grab Jounouchi and force him to duel. Bandit Keith shows ghost Kotsuzuka around to where the Cemetery Field is, in addition to adding some of his own cards to Kotsuzuka's deck to make it a perfect Ghost deck. As Yugi and company walk around, Jounouchi needs to take a short time-out. While the rest wait, Jounouchi "does his business," but is promptly knocked out by one of the men from earlier. He awakens in a Duel Ring, just as the duel is about to start. Jounouchi would normally turn down such underhanded tactics in forcing him to duel, but accepts after they start to call him a "losing dog." However, if he loses, it'll mean he's disqualified from the tournament for losing all four of his start chips. Meanwhile, Yugi and company are searching for Jounouchi, but to no avail. The duel starts, and as Kotsuzuka is making moves, Keith tells him to play something other than a Ghost card. Jounouchi voices his "displeasure" at his opponent being helped. Kotsuzuka brings out more monsters (at Keith's advice), but Jounouchi's monsters rip right through them one after another. Then Kotsuzuka's trump card comes out, "Cry of the Living Dead." This revives all of the monsters that Jounouchi destroyed as zombies. Yugi and company find the entrance to the cave that Jounouchi is in, where they run into props. AND when they're destroyed and brought back, their attack strength is increased by ten percent. In the other area of the cave, Yugi and company have lost Bakura, but find him again. Unfortunately, Bakura sets off a trap where a boulder comes rolling for them. (The rest of this scene is ommitted in this summary; it's so funny that you have to see it for yourself.) Jounouchi tries to use the Time Magician's Time Magic, but fails, and his Life Points are reduced. Kotsuzuka plays the Pumpking, which begins to power up his Ghost cards. He begins to annihilate Jounouchi's cards one after another; Jounouchi has no choice but to put his monsters in defense mode. Yugi and company finally find Jounouchi. There is a short scuffle with Keith's henchmen. Honda reminds Jounouchi to keep fighting for his sister. Jounouchi keeps fighting, playing his Red Eyes Black Dragon, but it's still no use as it's destroyed by Kotsuzuka's Dragon Zombie. It's then where Yugi tells Jounouchi that he has a card that can change the tide. Jounouchi draws it, "Shield in the Right Hand, Sword in the Left Hand". Playing it reverses the attack and defense strengths of all monsters. This turns the zombies' attack strength to 0. Jounouchi's monster destroys the Dragon Zombie, and he wins the duel. As Yugi and company try to make their way out of the cave, Keith's men seal the cave off with a boulder. He then beats up his men to get their Star Chips...enough to get into Pegasus' castle. With some help from Bakura's Millennium Ring, they make their way through something that looks like a maze, to a big room. There, they encounter Mei and Kyuu, the Labyrinth Brothers. In order for them to get out of the cave, they will need to defeat the Brothers in a tag-team duel. Yugi and Jounouchi versus Mei and Kyuu. In this duel, if either member of a team is reduced to zero Life Points, the game is over. After winning, they will have to choose a door to exit the labyrinth. If Yugi and Jounouchi win this duel, they can both get into Pegasus' castle. Outside on the island, Kaiba is making his way to the castle. The "board" that the teams are playing on has different rules. Monsters move like chess pieces, one space per their level. The problem is that one of them is telling the truth, and one is telling lies. Jounouchi things that he has it figured out, but Yugi is skeptical, and tells him to worry about it later. Yugi is the first to send a monster into the labyrinth, but it is cut down by the Wall Shadow -- which can move along the wall (which are not spaces), so it can move as far as it wants. Jounouchi places a card, and leaves his monster near him so that it can't be attacked. Kyuu send a Labyrinth Tank into the labyrinth, and sets up a trap. Yugi sends another monster into the labyrinth, but just as it's about to be destroyed, Jounouchi wraps it up in the Chained Boomerang, and Yugi destroys it. Jounouchi moves around, but Kyuu activates the Landmine Spider card, turning it into a monster and destorying the Axe Raider. Jounouchi's Flame Swordsman is about to be destroyed, when Yugi plays the Magic Box of Death, destroying the Landmine Spider, and then destroying the Labyrinth Tank with the Black Magician. The brothers are waiting for the three Guardians, in order to complete the Gate Guardian. Kyuu plays his Dungeon Worm, and sends it out, where it destroys the Elven Swordsman. Yugi plays the Magical Silk Hat card, hiding the Black Magician and the Flame Swordsman. The brothers play the Monster Tamer, which allows the Dungeon Worm to increase its power. The Dungeon Worm misses, though. Jounouchi pops his Swordsman out of the hat, and plays the Salamander card, to increase its attack strength and destroy the Dungeon Worm. However, it didn't negate the part of the attack that was reflected back at the Monster Tamer. Jounouchi attacks with his Flame Swordsman, but it doesn't reach the Gate Guardian. The Gate Guardian then attacks with a wave of water, destroying the Flame Swordsman. Yugi plays his Demon Summon card, and to the complete surprise of Mei and Kyuu, its lightning attack channels through the water and destroys the Water Guardian portion of the Gate Guardian. Unfortunately, the Labyrinth Brothers tell them that flying units can't make it through the labyrinth -- they must walk. Kyuu plays the Force Magic card, draining both Yugi and Jounouchi of half of their Life Points, and boosting the Gate Guardian's attack strength. Yugi moves his Black Magician forward, right to the end of the labyrinth, and plays Raise Dead. The Gate Guardian attacks the Black Magician, but Yugi uses the attack negation ability of the revived Water Guardian to block the attack. Jounouchi draws the Mimicing Illusionist, and uses it to copy the Force card, dropping the Labyrinth Brothers' Life Points, and boosting the Black Demon's Dragon's attack strength. The Gate Guardian destroys the revived Water Guardian. Both Yugi tells them why he got the Black Magician to the end of the labyrinth. With the Monster Replace card, he switches the places of his Black Magician and the Black Demon's Dragon. And since the Gate Guardian has already attacked, it can't negate any attacks. The Gate Guardian is destroyed, and Yugi and Jounouchi win. In the dungeon of Pegasus' castle, Kaiba finds Mokuba and is just about to free him when Pegasus shows up. Back with the Labyrinth Brothers, Yugi has tricked them into revealing the correct door to lead them out. (The trick is omitted so that you can see it for yourself.) Yugi, however, accepts out of a matter of honor. Keith makes his way around the castle, and sees the duel between Yugi and Kaiba starting. Both Yugi and Kaiba will be using the Duel Disk in the battle. Kaiba is sure that his Duel Disk system will be able to defeat Pegasus, but he doesn't realize Pegasus' true power. Yugi defeats Kaiba's first Monster, but it was just a ruse to be able to play a stronger Monster, the Vengeful Sword Stalker. Yugi then plays the Monster Replace card to swap his Monster with a Black Magician and destroy Kaiba's. The next Monster Kaiba plays, Ra Djinn, lures the Black Magician to attack. Yugi then is able to combine a Monster with the Unicorn's Horn card to get enough attack strength to destroy Kaiba's Monster. Kaiba then takes that time to pull out a Blue Eyes and annihilate Yugi's Monster. On his next turn, he draws the Fusion card and proceeded to fuse all three of his Blue Eyes into the Ultimate Dragon. He then uses the Multiply card to create many duplicates of the Kuribo. Though Kaiba attacks, the Kuribo wall keeps multiplying. Unless Kaiba can destroy all of them with one attack, they will continue to multiply. Then Yugi's next trump card comes out. He uses the Magic Effect Arrow, combined with Fusion and the Mammoth Skeleton, to fuse the Skeleton to the Ultimate Dragon. Since they are opposing types (in the animated series), the Ultimate Dragon's attack strength drops 1200 during each turn. Kaiba keeps attacking the Kuribos, but nothing happens other than the Dragon's attack strength continues to drop. Yugi draws the Elven Swordsman and attacks, but only destroys one head. He would have to destroy all three to defeat the Ultimate Dragon. Kaiba then begins to move backward toward the edge of the castle. When Kaiba loses all of his Life Points, he will fall off the edge. Kaiba draws and plays Raise Dead one of the defeated heads. This would be the last turn. Yugi attacks with the Elven Swordsman, but Anzu and the normal Yugi stop him. Kaiba doesn't wish to fight Mokuba, so concedes to playing a normal game with Pegasus. Yugi gives Kaiba a word of advice about Pegasus' Dragon-Sealing Jar. Pegasus begins to play, and appears incredible weak from the start. Kaiba knows that he isn't playing the game with everything he's got. Kaiba then is about to play his Blue Eyes when Pegasus activates his Prediction card. With a guess of higher or lower than an attack strength of 2000, Pegasus can gain a card. He guesses big, and takes Kaiba's Blue Eyes White Dragon. Kaiba goes on the defensive. He's also ready to play the Virus combo that he used on Yugi, but Pegasus already knows. On the way home, the crew decides to get something to eat later that night when, lo and behold, they find someone waiting for them in front of the game shop. She's come to Japan to get the Blue Eyes White Dragon back from Sugoroku. Her name is Rebecca. They can't really get out the words to explain just what happened to that Blue Eyes (remember, it was torn up by Kaiba?). Though she doesn't get the message, she offers to duel Sugoroku for it. However, since he's still ill, Yugi offers to duel in his stead. Rebecca starts off "cutely", but the card plays remind Sugoroku of something... He had come to the conclusion that the ancient Egyptians played an ancient card game in a series of rituals. However, since his idea was so farfetched, he was booted out of the scientific community and had to research his theory on his own. He had come across words pertaining to "God cards." However, later during their search, both of them were stuck in a cavein. During the time that they were stuck, their water quickly depleted. Arthur and Sugoroku decide to play a card game to pass the time. The winner of the game would win the last bit of water that they had. Rebecca doesn't want to hear any more, and demands that the duel continue. With a quick combo play, Yugi begins to gain control of the game. Rebecca plays her most powerful Monster, the Shadow Ghoul, which has its attack strength increased by 100 for each Monster in her Cemetery. Yugi extends the game a bit by playing Sealing Swords of Light. The game keeps going, Yugi waiting for a card. Sugoroku has a flashback of a similar moment. Then Yugi concedes the game to Rebecca. Rebecca wants the Blue Eyes back, and Sugoroku is more than happy to oblige -- a Blue Eyes that had been taped back together. That's when Arthur makes his way in. He knew the true outcome of the duel, with Yugi winning. Arthur takes a look at the top card of Yugi's deck, which turns out to be the Release of the Soul. It removes 5 cards in each player's Cemetery from the game. It would have powered down her Shadow Ghoul, where Yugi could have destroyed it with his Black Magician. In a flashback, Sugoroku had done the exact same thing, in order to give Arthur the last of the water, since he was in bad shape. To make sure that there are no hard feelings against her, Yugi gives Rebecca the Bond of Friendship card.
