SURNAME GRAY: is an English nickname for the man with gray hair or a gray beard, from old English Grceg,Grey. Among the Scottish and Irish it is derived as a translation for several Gaelic names that come from Riahach,Brindled, Gray, it is occasionally found as a place name for the English or Scotsman who originated in Graye in Cavados, from Latin Gratus, welcome. Grey, legrey are variations. Numerous cognates exist as well.

SURNAME ROBINSON: Robinson History The following comments were made by Jessie Charles Robinson on and around December 25, 1917, and written down for the record. This was read to him several times and he verified same each time.

William Robinson came from England after the Revolutionary War and settled in Loudon and Fauquier Counties, Virginia. He was married, owned land, and was buried in Virginia. He was a Baptist Minister and was married to Mary Lowe, who came from Scotland. To this union the following children were born Aaron, born March 31, 1799, died October 24, 1839, married to Susan Bolin, born September 12, 1804, died May 19, 1884. Also, Moses, Silias, Jessie (who married Sarah Solin), John (wife's name was Lydia), Judith, William and Elijah. William died unmarried.

Aaron and his wife came to Ohio from Virginia about 1828 to Harrison County, then on to Athens County about 1838. Mary Lowe, wife of William (1), had a brother named Jesse Lowe, hence the name Jessie in the family.

The children of Aaron Robinson and Susan Bolin were as follows Elizabeth, born 1826, married Loyal Van Bibbler; William, born July 19, 1828, married Susan Chase; Virginia, born 1829, and died in infancy; Benjamin, born May, 1831, married Phoebe Ann Willjams; Susan, born February 1832, married Henry Gibbs; Elijah, born January !, !S34, married Emily Chase, who was a sister of Susan Chase; Jessie Charles, born April 14, 1836, died April 19, 1922, married Lucy Ackley, October 7, 1858; Cook, born September 1838, died December 19, 1863.

Elijah Robinson was a member of the 7th Ohio Cavalry in the Civil War. He died December 10, 1904.

Jessie Charles was a member of Company C, 141st Ohio Volunteers, enlisting May 2, 1864, Home Guards, and dismissed from service September 23, 1864.

Cook was a member of Company C, 30th Reg't., Ohio Volunteers, infantry, and died near Chattanooga, Tenn. on December 19, 1863, from exhaustion as a volunteer on a forced march.

Benjamin Bolin, born in Virginia, Fauquier County, died during the Civil War, age about 90 years, born March 1784~ died 1862-65. Married Mary Lee of Virginia, Fauquier or Loudon County. He came to Ohio from Virginia about 1828 to Athens County, where he took up school land. Benjamin was a soldier in the War of 1812, stationed at Norfolk, Virginia, and had a land claim for this service.

The children of Benjamin Bolin and Mary Lee were as follows Susan, married Aaron Robinson; Elizabeth, married William Bolin; Sarah, married Jessie Robinson, son of William Robinson (1); Marshall, married Ann Bolin; Mary, married Samuel Dixson; Mary and Samuel Dixson are buried at Pleasonton, Athens County. The graves are marked.

Mary Lee had two brothers, Reuben and Willis Lee, who came to Ohio from Virginia. Reuben died in Harrison County and Willis died in Athens County. Mary Lee used to speak often of her cousin, "Old Judge Lee" of Virginia, supposedly Robert E. Lee. Benjamin Bolin had brothers Samuel and William. Mary Lee died about 1862, age 80 years, being two years older than her husband.

CASEBOLT

Surname Casebolt, as I was told by relatives, was Cherokee Indian. I have not verified this, however I was told an Indian girl ran away from home and gave herself the name Casebolt so as not to be found out. Also being told, if you are a Casebolt and you meet another of the same name you are related. All U.S. Casebolts are kin. Any help with this would be appreciated.
