VA 276
From: VA 256 Weyers Cave (Augusta County)
To: US 33 Penn Laird (Rockingham County)
Total Length: 9.43 miles
ROUTE LOG
VA 256: 0 - 0
RH-AU LINE: 1.77 - 1.77
US 33: 7.66 - 9.43
Creation: Appeared between 1945-47 as an upgrade to SR 620 and a renumbering of VA 253. Ran from VA 256 through US 33 to Keezletown, then west back to US 33 outside Harrisonburg. This is the 2nd VA 276.
Adjustments: VA 276 north was truncated to US 33 Penn Laird between 1954-55, leaving behind SR 620 and SR 925.
Posting: Fully posted
Comment: This should be extended south along SR 750 to US 11.
Previous VA 276's: VA 276 #1: Appeared in July 1933 as a renumbering of VA 839. Was a spur running north off of US 50 towards Frogtown in Clarke County. VA 276 was downgraded to SR 606 between 1942-44. VA 276 #1 (1941)
VA 277
From: US 11 Stephens City (Frederick County)
To: US 340-522 Double Tollgate (Frederick County)
Total Length: 5 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 11: 0 - 0
I-81 (exit 307): 0.5 - 0.5
US 340, US 522: 4.5 - 5
Creation: Appeared in July 1933 as a renumbering of part of VA 54. Ran from US 11 Stephens City to VA 340 (curr SR 658) White Post. This has been the only VA 277.
Adjustments: VA 277 east was truncated to Double Tollgate between 1942-44. Leaving behind a rerouted VA 12. Today that piece is part of US 340.
Posting: Fully posted
Comment: Double Tollgate is home to Dinosaur Land, a cheesy tourist trap with dinosaurs out front. VA 277 is the only VA 27x route to make it unscathed from the 1933 renumbering.
VA 277 - 1941/42
VA 278
From: US 258 City of Hampton
To: Langley AFB (City of Hampton)
Total Length: 1.5 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 258: 0 - 0
END VA 278: 1.5 - 1.5
Creation: Appeared between 1942-44 as a newly numbered route. Ran as it does today. This is the 2nd VA 278.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted; Identified from I-64 at King St. overpass, even though VA 278 has never extended that far south that I can discern.
Comment: This is the only state hwy in the Hampton Roads area I have not driven at least some of...
Previous VA 278's: VA 278 #1: Appeared in July 1933 as a newly numbered route. Started out as a short spur west off VA 42 Stover. Between 1934-37, VA 278 was extended to VA 5 (curr US 250) Whites Store. VA 278 was downgraded to SR 728 in 1940 or 1941. This may be the first modern route to be completely downgraded to secondary status (original VA 89 may be a tie with it).

VA 279
From: US 58 London Bridge (City of Virginia Beach)
To: US 60 Lynnhaven Shores (City of Virginia Beach)
Total Length: 5.4 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 58: 0 - 0
US 60: 5.4 - 5.4
Creation: Appeared in 1981, over what was once part of SR 615 and SR 632. Ran from US 58 to US 60, but not like today. This is the 2nd VA 279.
Adjustments: VA 279's north end was shifted eastward from Broad Bay to US 60 about 1989. This left behind Old Great Neck Road.
Posting: Sporadic at best. When I lived there in 1991-93, the signs that existed were all circles. The original VA 279-US 60 jct was still posted as late as 1993. Also, on the drawbridge on Old Great Neck Rd. there was a mini-white bordered SR 809 sign (since removed).
A. Froehlig reports that actual VA 279 shields have been erected at US 60 in 2005.
Comments: An alternate to get from Va. Beach waterfront to Chesapeake Bay beaches.
Previous VA 279's: VA 279 #1: Appeared in July 1933 as a newly numbered route. Was a spur east off VA 266 (curr SR 689) Fairview. VA 279 was downgraded to SR 669 between 1942-44.
VA 280  not currently assigned
Previous VA 280's: VA 280 #1: Appeared in July 1933 as a newly numbered route. Was a spur west off VA 340 (curr US 340) north of Luray. VA 280 was downgraded to SR 648 between 1945-47.
VA 280 #2: Appeared as new construction in 1979. Ran from US 58 west of Franklin to US 258. In 1982, this was renumbered as part of the US 58 Bypass of Franklin (which was not completed - you had to follow SR 714 down to VA 189 and east to Holland to continue on US 58. When the 58 freeway was finished, access between US 58 and SR 714 was taken away until an interchange was built about 1996)

VA 281  not currently assigned
Previous VA 281's: VA 281: Appeared in July 1933 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 251 Effinger to Oakdale. VA 281 was downgraded to SR 612 between 1945-47. VA 281 (1941)

VA 283
From: US 23 Bus City of Norton
To: US 23 & US 58 ALT City of Norton
Total Length: 0.36 mile
ROUTE LOG
US 23 Bus: 0 - 0
US 23, US 58 ALT: 0.36 - 0.36
Creation: Appeared as a new freeway in 1986. Ran as it does today. This is the 2nd VA 283.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Does not seem to be posted at US 23-58 ALT. In fact, at the offramp from US 23 NB, it is signed as US 58 ALT Business. I have not been to the other end, so I don't know how it is or is not posted. Dave reports in June 2002 that there are no VA 283 signs anywhere.
Comment: Provides direct access from US 58 ALT to Norton, if you are opposed to using VA 74.
Previous VA 283's: VA 283 #1: Appeared in July 1933 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 56 near US 60 jct to SR 655 Glenmore. VA 283 was downgraded to SR 602 between 1942-44.
VA 284  not currently assigned
Previous VA 284's: VA 284: Appeared in 1935 as a renumbering of VA 250 (which had to be eliminated when US 250 appeared). Ran from US 220 Forks of Water to Crabbottom. VA 284 was downgraded to SR 642 between 1945-47.

VA 285
From: I-64 Exit 91 (Augusta County)
To: US 250 Fishersville (Augusta County)
Total Length: 1.85 mile
ROUTE LOG
US 250: 0 - 0
I-64 (exit 91): 1.71 - 1.71
SR 608/935: 0.14 - 1.85
Creation: Appeared in 1999 as an upgrade to SR 608. Ran as it does today. This is the 2nd VA 285.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted; It is Cosigned with SR 608.
Comments: This was once part of original VA 273. According to TS Smith, VA 285 ends 0.2 mile south of I-64 at the junction of SR 608 and SR 935, and may extend to Stuarts Draft in the future.
Previous VA 285's: VA 285 #1: Appeared between 1935-37 as a newly numbered route. A spur that ran from US 60 Williamsburg eastward. In 1938 it was connected to the new VA 168 (curr VA 143). Between 1942-44, VA 285 was decomissioned. It appears that later this became part of today's VA 162 but may have been today's SR 641 instead.
VA 286  not currently assigned
Previous VA 286's: VA 286: Appeared between 1935-37 as a newly numbered route. Was a spur north from US 60 west of Williamsburg. VA 286 never connected to the new VA 168 (curr VA 30) and was downgraded to SR 604 between 1942-44.
VA 287
From: VA 7 Bus Purcellville (Loudon County)
To: MD State Line above Lovettsville, Loudon County (continues as MD 17 to Smithsburg, MD)
Total Length: 12.67 miles
ROUTE LOG
VA 7 Bus: 0 - 0
VA 7: 0.5 - 0.5
VA 9: 3 - 3.5
MD STATE LINE: 9 - 12.5
Creation: Appeared between 1945-47 as a renumbering of the northern discontinuous piece of VA 17. Pretty much ran as it does today. This is the 2nd VA 287.
Adjustments: At some point the lower end of VA 287 was adjusted to meet VA 7 east of town instead of in it.
Posting: Fully posted
Comment: The bridge over the Potomac River is built so that you pass over the town of Brunswick, MD. Incidentally, MD 17 should be MD 79 at the state line.
Previous VA 287's: VA 287 #1: Appeared between 1935-37. This was probably a renumbering of a section of US 58. Ran from US 58-460 (curr US 58-VA 337 jct) to US 58 (curr US 58-VA 141 jct) on Turnpike Rd. within Portsmouth. This was renumbered as US 58 ALT between 1942-44. Today it is the un-multiplexed part of Portsmouth's VA 337 ALT.

Creation: Appeared as new construction around 1988. Ran from I-95 to VA 76 only. This is the 2nd VA 288.
Adjustments: The piece between West Creek Pkwy near VA 6 to US 250 opened as a super 2 about late 1997.
In 2002, VA 288 was extended north from VA 76 to Lucks Lane
On 12/22/03, VA 288 was opened from US 250 to I-64.
In spring 2004, VA 288 was opened between VA 6 and US 250 as the full freeway.
On August 27, 2004 VA 288 was extended south from VA 6 to US 60.
The final segment of VA 288 between Lucks Lane and US 60 opened Nov. 19, 2004.
Posting: Fully posted
Comment: Now completed, VA 288 provides a western bypass of Richmond and allows access to US 60 and US 360 from either direction of I-95 without using the tolled Powhite Pkwy. See Scott Kozel's site for a more detailed look into VA 288's history.
Previous VA 288's: VA 288 #1: Appeared between 1935-37. Was a spur west off US 13 Temperanceville. Ran only as far as the railroad tracks. VA 288 was downgraded to SR 695 between 1948-50.

END VA 290: 0.26 - 0.54
Creation: No idea how long this has been here. I have not located any other VA 290's, so this may go back to 1935-37. VA 290 does appear as today on the 1961 Rockinham County Map.
Adjustments: Likely none
Posted: Very well posted
Comment:Huffman Dr., Main St., College St. within Dayton corporate limits. Continues on both ends as SR 701.
VA 291  not currently assigned
Previous VA 291's: VA 291 #1: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1923. Ran from VA 29 (curr US 17 Bus) Gloucester to Mathews. VA 291 was renumbered as VA 600 in 1929. Today it is part of VA 14.
VA 291 #2: Appeared between 1935-37 as a renumbering of a piece of US 460 on Old Forest Rd. outside Lynchburg. In 1976, VA 291 west was extended around over new construction to US 460 (curr US 460 Bus). Around 1989, the extended VA 291 became part of the US 501 Lynchburg Bypass. The rest of VA 291 was downgraded to simply Old Forest Rd.

Comment: Since VA 263 has no exit with I-81, this is the route to use to get to it.
Previous VA 292's: VA 292 #1: Appeared between 1935-37 as a renumbering of a piece of VA 340. Ran from SR 620 (curr VA 252) Middlebrook to US 11 near Greenville. VA 292 was extended northwest to VA 254 West View between 1945-47, replacing a portion of VA 56. VA 292 was downgraded west of VA 252 to SR 876 between 1948-50. Comment: The lastest pawn in a game of musical numbers that has plagued Danville over the years. The VA 293 bridge over the Dan River (from the 20's) is being replaced with a new bridge on the west. The new bridge is being built in the same architectural style as the old one -- cool!
Previous VA 293's: VA 293 #1: Appeared as a renumbering of VA 220 between 1935-37, which had to be eliminated with the coming of US 220 to Virginia. Ran from VA 30 King William south to SR 632 Lanesville. VA 293 was downgraded to SR 633 between 1945-47.
VA 294  not currently assigned
Previous VA 294's: VA 294: Appeared between 1935-37 as a renumbering of part of VA 12 or US 220. Ran from US 11 Troutdale to current US 220 Trinity. VA 294 was downgraded to SR 670 between 1942-44.

VA 295  not currently assigned
Previous VA 295's: VA 295 #1: Appeared between 1935-37 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 233 Catlett southwest for about 6 miles. In 1938 this was extended to US 15-29 Remington. VA 295 was renumbered as a rerouted (current) VA 28 in 1941.
VA 295 #2: Appeared in 1941 as a renumbering of a piece of VA 28. Ran from US 15-29 New Baltimore to VA 28 near Bristow. VA 295 was renumbered as VA 215 in 1962.
VA 295 #2

VA 296
From: VA 30-33 West Point (King William County)
To: VA 298 West Point (King William County)
Total Length: 0.4 miles
ROUTE LOG
VA 30, VA 33: 0 - 0
VA 298: 0.40 - 0.40
Creation: Goes back at least to 1944, could go back as far as 1935-37. Ran as it does today, I'm sure. This has been the only VA 296.
Adjustments: Likely none
Posting: Very well posted, really; cutouts were up until the mid 90's at VA 30-33.
Comments: VA 296 and VA 298 form an odd pair. 298 runs from VA 33 down Lee St. before turning west on 5th(?) St. and dead ending. 296 runs from VA 33 from Kirby St., then turns east 2 blocks to end at VA 298. Neither Kirby or Lee is a main street.  Quite what is accomplished by this is a mystery.
VA 297  not currently assigned
Previous VA 297's: VA 297: Appeared between 1942-44 as an upgrade to SR 624. Originally ran from VA 128 (curr US 460 Bus-Graves Mill Rd. jct) west to the Campbell-Bedford County Line, just short of VA 127 (curr SR 811). Between 1945-47, VA 297 was extended west to US 460-VA 122 (curr US 221 Bus-VA 122 Bus) Bedford, replacing SR 624. Between 1948-50, VA 297 east was extended along Fort Ave. to US 29, replacing part of VA 128. In 1966, VA 297 east was rerouted at VA 126 Graves Mill Rd, turning east along new construction to meet US 29 (curr US 29-US 29 Bus jct). The piece along Fort Ave became an extended VA 126. Between 1968-70, the Bedford Bypass was built, and is shown on the 1970 map as VA 297 Bypass. In 1971 or 1972, VA 297 was renumbered as part of US 460. This makes (I think) the only VA state hwy with a Business designation to be renumbered later.
VA 298
From: VA 33 West Point (King William County)
To: VA 298 dead end West Point (King William County)
Total Length: 0.75 mile
ROUTE LOG
BEGIN VA 298: 0 - 0
VA 296: 0.53 - 0.53
VA 33: 0.22 - 0.75
Creation: Appears explicitly on the 1944 official map. Just like VA 296, it could have been around in 1935-37. Likely ran as it does today. THis is the only VA 298.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Very well posted; cutouts went away in mid-90's
Comment: VA 298 is on just about every official map since 1944. You'd think one time VA 296 could get some recognition. How did West Point get 2 useless town routes?
VA 299

Comment: A brand new divided parkway linking the US 29 bypass/business route interchange with US 15 south of Culpeper. This is the former site of SR 929, which was notable for being a literal dead-end divided highway, complete with overhead No Outlet signs at the US 29 interchange.
Previous VA 299's: VA 299 #1: Appeared in 1936 or 1937 as new construction. Ran from US 58-VA 191 Bowers Hill to US 17 Deep Creek. This was the first piece of Military Hwy to open. In 1938, VA 299 was extended east to VA 27 (curr US 13-460-VA 166 jct). VA 299 was renumbered as VA 13 in 1940 or 1941. Today it is US 13-460.
VA 299 #2: Appeared in 1940 or 1941 as a new cutoff. Ran from US 301 to US 460 south of Petersburg. In 1953, this became part of US 301 when US 301 ALT was born.

VA 300Y Powhatan
PO
The 200 feet of roadway which connects VA 300 to SR 1001 and SR 1003.  Unfortunately, I don't have the names for these roads. There is no way to tell how long this has been here. It is posted at VA 300 in a white rectangle (the only Y route I know of to be posted this way) and the Y is lower case in the sign.
