US 301

VA 301  not currently assigned
Previous VA 301's: VA 301: Appeared in 1929. Ran from then-NC 14 (curr NC 86) north to US 170 (curr VA 293) Danville. In 1930-31, VA 301 was extended northwest as new routing to Pleasant Gap. Below Danville was at one point part of original VA 14 and may have briefly been a spur (VA 144? Pure speculation). VA 301 was renumbered as VA 41 north of Danville and VA 86 South of Danville in July 1933.
VA 302 University of Virginia, Charlottesville
Total Length: 9.28 miles

Creation: CTB minutes imply this went back to July 1933, but the earliest explicit use of the 302 designation was in the March 1950 minutes. Official maps did not start identifying VA 302 until around 1990. This is the 2nd VA 302.
Adjustments: None that can be accurately described
Posting: I have driven maybe half the roads on campus and seen no signs. However, I received word from Amy Barden 6/21/04 that there is a VA 302 sign (narrow square sign) off US 29 Bus at the southwest portion of UVA, at the Piedmont housing area.
Comments: First of the many college routes in the state highway systems. Like many of the other college routes, VA 302 consists not of a single road, but rather much (and perhaps all) of the state-maintained blacktop on the UVA campus.  VDOT apparently has a thing about assigning a number to any drivable surface maintained by the state.  Apparently a few other states do the same thing, including Utah, which even assigns state highway numbers to driving test tracks.
Previous VA 302's: VA 302 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 170 (curr US 29 Bus) Chatham to VA 12 (curr VA 360) west of Halifax. In 1930-31, VA 302 was extended further west of Chatham a few miles. In 1932, VA 302 was renumbered as current VA 57.
VA 303 Virginia Military Institute, Lexington
Total Length: 2.93 miles

Creation: CTB minutes imply this goes back to July 1933, but the earliest explicit use of the 303 designation was in the August 1936 minutes. Official maps did not start identifying VA 303 until around 1990. This is the 2nd VA 303.
Adjustments: None that can be accurately described
Posting: No signs on US 11 Bus or US 60. I have not driven on campus to see if any 303 signs are in there.
Comment: VA 303 is on some 80's VDOT state maps erroneously where VA 383 in Fairfax County is.
Previous VA 303's: VA 303 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 20 (curr VA 40) Cody to VA 18 (curr US 501) Volens. VA 303 was renumbered as VA 126 in July 1933. Today it is SR 603.

ROUTE LOG
US 501: 0 - 0
US 360: 1 - 1
Creation: Appeared in 1984 as a renumbering of VA 304Y. Ran as it does today. This is the 3rd VA 304.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Fully posted at US 360, only posted US 501 SB.
Comment: Seymour Dr. between US 360 and US 501.
Previous VA 304's: VA 304 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 15 (curr US 15-360 VA 47 jct) through Chalotte CH, ending at the Charlotte-Prince Edward County line. In 1930-31, VA 304 was extended north to US 60 (curr US 460 Bus) Pamplin. VA 304 was renumbered as VA 39 in July 1933. Today it is part of VA 47.
VA 304 #2: Appeared by March 1937 (CTB minutes) as new routing. Originally ran from US 501 S. Boston to US 360 (curr US 360-VA 344-VA 360 jct). In 1952, a new bridge over the Dan River (curr US 360) was constructed. VA 304 was shifted to this to end at US 58. The previous route into Downtown South Boston became 304Y (all of today's VA 304). VA 304 became US 360 in 1984.
VA 304Y: Created in 1952 as a renumbering of part of VA 304. Ran from US 501 Downtown South Boston east to VA 304 (curr US 360). VA 304Y returned to being VA 304 in 1984. VA 304Y shows explicitly on the 1961 Halifax County Map.
VA 305
From: VA 211 New Market (Shenandoah County)
To: New Market Battlefield (Shenandoah County)
Total Length: 1.79 miles
ROUTE LOG
VA 211: 0 - 0
VA 305 END: 1.79 - 1.79
Creation: First designated in CTB Minutes in June 1968; First appeared on the main official map in 1971 (was shown on the 1970 historical picture map on reverse of main map) as an upgrade to an I-81 frontage road. Ran as it does today. This is the 4th VA 305.
Adjustments: The original length of VA 305 was 0.8 miles. I cannot find any CTB documentation showing when it was lengthened, unless it was after 2001.
Posting: Fully posted; cutouts removed around 2000.
Comment: VA 305 is shown on the historical maps on the reverse of VDOT maps in the 70's.
Previous VA 305's: VA 305 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 15 Kingsville to a mile short of US 60 (curr US 460) Prospect. VA 305 was connected to US 60 in 1930-31. VA 305 was renumbered as VA 134 in July 1933. Today it is mostly SR 658 and part of VA 133.
VA 305 #2: Appeared in 1938 as a newly numbered route, although in the early days this had been part of original VA 12. Ran from US 58 (curr VA 16) Volney west to the Grayson-Washington County Line. This VA 305 became part of US 58 in 1941.
VA 305 #3: Appeared between 1942-44 as a newly numbered route, although in the early days this was part of US 60. Was a 2 piece discontinuous route. Each piece was a stub off US 60 to Fort Story - one near Seashore State Park and one where US 60 turned parallel to the ocean. These 2 pieces were never connected as one route and was decommissioned officially Dec 1960 (CTB minutes). VA 305 remained on official maps through the 1963 issue. Virginia Beach didn't get the memo, as it still posts both of these pieces, some in circles. It was very well posted in 1992, but is less posted now.
VA 306
From: US 60 City of Newport News
To: US 17-VA 143 City of Newport News
Total Length: 0.9 mile
ROUTE LOG
US 60: 0 - 0
US 17, VA 143: 0.9 - 0.9
Creation: Appeared as a renumbering of a piece of US 17 in 1941. Ran like it does today. This is the 3rd VA 306.
Adjustments: In 1959, VA 306 was extended west of US 60 around the Mariner Museum to US 60-VA 312 jct. VA 306 was restored to its original routing in 1986.
Posting: Fully posted; white border signs removed in last couple years
Comment: Harpersville Rd.
Previous VA 306's: VA 306 #1: Appeared in 1929. Ran from VA 13 (curr US 60) Mt. Rush to a few miles south of Appomattox. Below Appomattox was new routing. North of town, this was the original VA 104. In 1930-31, a second piece appeared north from VA 20 (curr VA 40) Phenix. In July 1933, VA 306 became VA 26 south of Appomattox (both pieces of VA 306), part of VA 131 and VA 24 north of Appomattox. Today it is SR 727, VA 131, and VA 24.

VA 306 #2: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1938. Ran from US 17-60 (curr US 17-60-258 jct) to VA 143 (curr US 17-258 VA 143 jct). VA 306 became part of US 17 by 1941.

US 360: 1.07 - 9.32
Creation: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1938. Ran between the same endpoints as today, but in a much wavier fashion totaling 11 miles. This is the 2nd VA 307.
Adjustments: In September 1940 (CTB minutes), VA 307 was given its current direct routing. The old route used Amelia SR 645 and SR 657, then Amelia/Nottoway SR 616, a small piece of modern 307, Nottoway SR 620 and Prince Edward SR 600.

Comment: A common short cut between Richmond and Farmville
Previous VA 307's: VA 307 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 60-VA 309 (curr US 460-VA 24) Appomattox halfway to VA 13 (curr US 60) Bent Creek. VA 307 was extended to VA 13 in 1930-31. This was renumbered as part of VA 26 in July 1933.
VA 308
From: US 58 east of Dreweryville (Southampton County)
To: SR 612 north of Southampton Correctional Center (Southampton County)
Total Length: 3.65 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 58: 0 - 0

Creation: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of one of the myriad pieces of VA 32. Ran from VA 40 Sussex south to the Sussex-Southampton County Line. This is the 3rd VA 308.
Adjustments: Between 1945-47, a second discontinuous piece of VA 308 appeared, from US 58 to SR 612. Between 1948-50, the original piece of VA 308 was downgraded to SR 735, leaving behind current VA 308. The 5 mile gap between the pieces does not appear to have ever been connected.

Comment: I think this is the only 3xx route that started out as a normal route and was reduced to a state facility route.
Previous VA 308's: VA 308 #1: Appeared in 1929 as a new route. Ran from VA 306 (curr SR 727) Appomattox to US 60 (curr US 460 Bus) Appomattox. VA 308 was renumbered to VA 309 in 1930-31.

VA 308 #2: Appeared in 1930-31 as a renumbering of VA 309. Ran from US 60-VA 307 (curr US 460-VA 26) Appomattox to VA 306 (curr VA 131) Appomattox. This was renumbered as part of VA 24 in July 1933. Today it is an SR 7xx route, since VA 24 was moved to the Appomattox Bypass.
VA 309
From: VA 123 McLean (Fairfax County)
To: US 29 Arlington (Arlington County)
Total Length: 5.28 miles
ROUTE LOG
VA 123: 0 - 0
AR-FX LINE: 2.81 - 2.81
VA 120: 1.18 - 3.99
US 29: 0.66 - 4.65
US 29: 0.63 - 5.28
Creation: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1938. Ran from US 29-211 Lee Hwy (curr VA 309) only to VA 9 (curr VA 120). This is the 3rd VA 309.
Adjustments: By 1941, VA 309 was extended out to the Arlington City Limit. Between 1948-53, VA 309 was extended out over SR 738 to VA 123 (curr SR 3547). In 1960-61, VA 309 and US 29-211 swapped alignments, such that 309 crossed under 29-211 and looped east around to 29-211 about a mile later. In 1963 or 1964, VA 309 was extended further west over SR 738 to the rebuilt VA 123.

Comment: Old Dominion Dr., Lee Highway  It's a little known fact that for about one mile, US 29 is actually Old Dominion Dr. and VA 309 is actually Lee Highway.
Previous VA 309's: VA 309 #1: Appeared in 1929 as new routing. Ran from US 60-VA 307 (curr US 460-VA 26) Appomattox to VA 306 (curr VA 131) Appomattox. VA 309 was renumbered to VA 308 in 1930-31.

Adjustments: None
Posting: Posted with a shield at both VA 6 intersections.
Comment: Looking at it in person, you can tell that many years ago, this was part of original VA 19 and probably the earliest alignment of VA 6.
Previous VA 310's: VA 310 #1: Appeared as a renumbering of part of original VA 13 in 1929. Ran from US 15-60 (curr US 15 Bus-US 460 Bus) Farmville to VA 13 (curr US 60) near Cumberland. VA 310 was renumbered as part of VA 45 in July 1933.

Adjustments: VA 311 was extended north over what had been part of US 60 to its current length between 1948-50.
Posting: Fully posted; error US 311 signs at US 11 SB Salem and VA 42 EB New Castle. cutout north of Roanoke (thanks Gribblenation!)
Comment: No exit with I-81 until 1986; VA 311 north of I-81 is very rustic and scenic - a must drive. There has been debate among road scholars as to whether this road was ever part of US 311, but it was a related extension like VA 33 and VA 211. Virginia has had several others over the years including: VA 17, VA 29, VA 121, VA 158, VA 258, VA 340, VA 360, VA 501
Previous VA 311's: VA 311 #1: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1923. Ran from VA 31 (curr US 1) Ashland to Hanover, Bowling Green, then to VA 38 (curr US 17 Bus-VA 2) near Fredericksburg. By 1927, VA 311 north end was moved from Fredericksburg to US 17 (curr SR 610) Corbin. (the older alignment ran roughly along SR 609 from Bowling Green to Fredericksburg) In 1929, VA 311 was renumbered as VA 50 (curr VA 54 and US 301/VA 2).
VA 311 #2: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1929. Was a spur east of US 29 Madison Heights. VA 311 was renumbered as part of VA 130 in July 1933. Today it is VA 210.
VA 312
From: US 60 City of Newport News
To: US 17-VA 143 split City of Newport News
Total Length: 1.1 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 60: 0 - 0
US 17, VA 143: 1.1 - 1.1
Creation: Appeared in CTB Minutes in January 1957 as a new construction project. First appears on the 1961 Official. Ran as it does today. This is the 4th VA 312.
Adjustments: None.
Posting: Fully posted
Comments: J. Clyde Morris Blvd. At one time VA 312 turned into VA 306 when crossing US 60; Newport News has a thing with making sure a state highway connects US 60 to wherever US 17 heads north - this is the 3rd connector they've used for this purpose.
Previous VA 312's: VA 312 #1: Appeared between 1924-27. Originally ran from VA 31 (US 1) 5 miles north of Ashland to VA 31 (curr SR 608) Snell. By 1927, VA 312 was extended to the newer routing of VA 31 (curr US 1) Four Mile Fork, replacing an older alignment of VA 31 in Spotsylvania. In 1929, VA 312 was renumbered as VA 51. Today, the original VA 312 is SR 738 and the extended piece is now VA 208.
VA 312 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 18 (curr US 29) Amherst north halfway to Colleen. VA 312 was extended north to Colleen in 1930-31. VA 312 was renumbered as VA 150 in July 1933. Today it is partly US 29 and partly SR 739.
VA 312 #3: Appeared in 1938 as a renumbering of VA 33 #2. Was in 2 pieces: 1. VA 35 Courtland to the Blackwater River east of US 460 Ivor 2. a short stub west off VA 158 (curr US 258) Smithfield. Between 1942-44, piece 2 was downgraded to SR 626. The rest of VA 312 was downgraded to SR 616 in 1952.
VA 313
From: US 522 Maidens (Powhatan County)
To: Beaumont Learning Facility (Powhatan County)
Total Length: 2.08 miles

Creation: Unknown - although there has been room on many official maps to show this, it never has. This may go back to 1938, as I have found no other modern VA 313. Some of the buildings at the facility look pretty old. This is the 3rd VA 313.
Adjustments: None
Posting: White rectangles at US 522 and nearby SR 669 (old US 522).
Comment: Newer roads at the facility have "end state maintenance" signs at them, so VA 313 is some of the interior roads but not all of them. The access road itself is narrow and substandard.
Previous VA 313's: VA 313 #1: Appeared between 1924-27 as a new routing. Ran from VA 31 (curr US 1-301) near Centralia to Chesterfield. VA 313 was renumbered as VA 410 in 1929. Today it is VA 145.
VA 313 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 13 (curr US 60) Sardis to VA 18 (curr VA 151) Piney River, with a small break near Lowesville. THe gap was connected in 1930-31. In 1932, VA 313 was also assigned to what had been VA 315 which ran from VA 18 Greenfield (curr VA 6) southwest to Brent Gap. Both pieces of VA 313 were renumbered as part of VA 151 in July 1933. Today it is SR 778.
VA 314 Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg (Montgomery County)
Total Length: 10.04 miles

Creation: Unknown. There has not been another modern VA 314, so this may date back to 1941. Appeared on official maps back to at least 1992. This is at least the 2nd VA 314.
Adjustment: None that can be accurately described.
Posting: Fully posted at US 460 Bypass. VA 314 is posted up one side and down the other east of this jct.; also posted with a shield on SR 685 just west of US 460 Byp-VA 412 jct
Comment: Every road in the confines of Virginia Tech. Some of these roads may still be unpaved...
Previous VA 314's: VA 314 #1: Appeared in 1929. Ran from VA 18 (curr US 29 Bus) Lovingston to Shipman, then Wingina. Up to Shipman was part of VA 18, the rest was new routing. VA 314 was renumbered as part of VA 56 in July 1933.
VA 314 #1: Appears on 1928 VDOT map as a spur from US 1/VA 31 to Mt. Vernon. This was renumbered as VA 710 in 1929. Today it is the northern half of VA 235.
VA 314 #1
VA 314 in 1928.
VA 315 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, City of Richmond
Total Length: 0.9 miles

Creation: The museum opened in 1967. It is located off VA 161 just south of VA 6. This is the 4th VA 315. This is the highest number to have been used 4 times.
Adjustments: The museums exhibits change periodically. Seriously, no changes to VA 315.
Posting: Not at all
Comment: I've only seen this on the VDOT City Atlas Book.
Previous VA 315's: VA 315 #1: A 1920's route appearing later than 1923. Ran from VA 31 (curr US 1) Woodbridge to Occoquan. It had been part of VA 31 previously. This became part of VA 25 in 1929. Today it is SR 906.
VA 315 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a renumbering of VA 181. Ran from VA 18 Greenfield (curr VA 6) southwest to Brent Gap. This was renumbered as part of VA 313 in 1932. Today it is part of VA 151.
VA 315 #3: Appeared in 1938 as a new cutoff between US 158 (curr US 258) and VA 189 (curr SR 714) south of Franklin. VA 315 became part of VA 189 between 1942-44.

VA 316
From: US 13 Bus & VA 126 Tasley
To: VA 187 Bloxom
Total Length: 9.49 miles
ROUTE LOG
US 13 Bus, VA 126: 0 - 0
VA 176: 5.81 - 5.81
VA 187: 3.68 - 9.49
Creation: Appeared in 1940 or 1941 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 13 Tasley to VA 176 Parksley. This is the 3rd VA 316.
Adjustments: VA 316 north was extended to Bloxom between 1942-44.
Posting: Fully posted, and is one of the best posted eastern shore routes.
Comments: The VDOT map continues to show this route incorrectly merging with VA 126. VA 316 did not replace any of the original VA 177, which crossed 316 and ran west of it to Parksley (SR 763). I drove VA 316 in August 2003. There is original concrete still down between US 13 Bus/VA 126 and VA 176. VA 316 is also one of just 2 normal state routes on the eastern shore with no stoplights (the other is VA 180).
Previous VA 316's: VA 316 #1: Appears in 1928 CTB records, running from US 1/VA 31 Chester east towards Hopewell Bridge. This was renumbered as part of VA 407 in 1929. Today it is part of VA 10.
VA 316 #2: Appeared in 1929 as a newly numbered route. Ran from US 15 Dillwyn about 2/3 of the way to VA 19 (curr VA 6) Scottsville. VA 316 was connected to VA 19 in 1930-31. VA 316 was renumbered as part of VA 20 in July 1933.
VA 317  not currently assigned
Previous VA 317's: VA 317 #1: Appeared in 1930-31 as a newly numbered route. Ran from VA 18 (curr US 29) Madison Heights west to Elon. VA 317 was renumbered as VA 130 in July 1933.
VA 317 #2: Served 1.52 miles of roads within the Blue Ridge Sanatorium in Charlottesville. Connected directly to VA 20 just south of I-64. This was posted in a white rectangle as "RT 317". The earliest reference I could find for this route in the CTB minutes (VA 317 never appeared on VDOT official state maps) was 1946. VA 317 was decommissioned in April 2002.
VA 318
From: 9th St. City of Richmond
To: State Capitol
Total Length: 0.32 miles

Creation: Unknown; I know of no other modern VA 318, so this could go back to 1941. This is the 2nd VA 318.
Adjustments: None
Posting: None
Comment: You can't even drive on this road unless you have the right pass. Driveway from 9th St. into the state complex. Shown on the late Gousha map of Richmond and VDOT city atlas only. I drove this by heading north on 9th street and turning right into the driveway. I said I made a wrong turn, and the guard had me drive the circle driveway to turn around to leave. Of course, that was in 1996. I'm not sure that would work in today's climate.
Previous VA 318's: VA 318 #1: A newly numbered route created in 1930-31. Ran from US 501 (curr US 360) Green Bay halfway to US 60 (curr US 460) east of Farmville. This was renumbered as VA 135 in July 1933. Today this is SR 696.
VA 319
From: VA 142 Petersburg (Dinwiddie County)
To: US 460 Bus & US 1 Petersburg (Dinwiddie County)
Total Length: 5.03 miles

Creation: Appeared as a newly numbered route between 1942-44. Ran as it does now. This is the 2nd VA 319.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Shield reassurance marker at VA 142 and both US 1 entrances; also identified at I-85 US 460 overpass
I drove through here in April 2005 from US 1 to VA 142. There are a ton of 319 rectangle markers at internal intersections with in the facility. They were all new (did I miss a pile of cutouts?). This is the most heavily posted state facility I have seen.
Comment: Serves Central State Hospital
Previous VA 319's: VA 319 #1: Appeared as a newly numbered route in 1930-31. Ran from VA 10 (curr US 221) near Forest to US 29 S. Lynchburg. In 1932 VA 319 was extended east to VA 10-18 (curr US 460 Bus, US 501 Bus). This was renumbered as part of VA 128 in July 1933. Today this is mostly Graves Mill Rd.

VA 320
From: SR 779 Catawba (Roanoke County)
To: SR 698 Catawba (Roanoke County)
Total Length: 1.75 miles

Creation: Appeared as a renumbering of VA 123 in 1941. Ran as it does today. This is the 2nd VA 320.
Adjustments: None. The endpoints used to be VA 311 and VA 114, though.
Posting: Fully posted at SR 779; white rectangle at SR 698.
Comment: Serves Catawba State Hospital; This has had 4 different state route numbers back to at least 1923.
Previous VA 320's: VA 320 #1: Appeared as a new route in 1930-31. Was a spur west off US 170 (curr US 29 Bus) Alta Vista. This became part of VA 43 in July 1933.
US 321
VA 321
From: SR 613-5000 Monticello Crossing (James City County)
To: College of William & Mary, City of Williamsburg
Total Length: at least 5.23 miles

Creation: Unknown. There has been no other modern VA 321. Appears on official state maps back to 1988, but may go back to 1941. Originally served the college, with a west entrance out to SR 615. This is the 3rd VA 321.
Adjustments: Around 2000, VA 321 was extended to the new VA 199 freeway, and signs on ramps indicate VA 321 continues west (help from audience?). The 2000-01 official map shows this extension as VA 5 ALT, which apparently did not pan out.
Posting: Some posting outside campus, including the western end and reassurance markers at VA 199; also a reassurance marker east of SR 615 Ironbound Road (which according to Dave Montuori was still a cutout in the early 1980s)
Comment: Includes all the roads in the college.
In January 2003 I got some info about VA 321's west end (thanks to Dan Ehlke):
Having just graduated from William & Mary in 2001, I recall many drives I took around the greater Williamsburg area. During my time down there, SR 321 (Monticello Avenue) was being extended out past SR 199. At the time of my graduation, it came to an abrupt end just past News Road (secondary 613), depositing drivers onto a small neighborhood street called Powhatan Secondary. There was another, shorter section of Monticello Avenue (which presumably would also take the 321 numbering) constructed from Centerville Rd/secondary 614 a little ways toward the east. Latest maps indicate that this section will eventually join up with the main route, and that it will all be extended past 614, finally ending at SR 5. Indeed, as of late 2001, construction had begun on the intersection with 5.

Dan updated the situation in July 2003:
The entire stretch of Monticello Avenue (part of which is signed VA 321) appears to now be complete between VA 199 and VA 5. However, about a half mile south/west of the junction with 199, signs have appeared marking the (new) roadway as secondary highway 5000.

Dave Montuori sent a message in June 2005 that VA 321 definitely ends at SR 613 and SR 5000 picks up from there.
Previous VA 321's: VA 321 #1: Created in 1923 as a new route. Ran from VA 32 (curr US 15) Zion to Oilville. By 1927, this was renumbered as an extended VA 41. Today it is the US 250 corridor.
VA 321 #2: Appeared in 1932 as a newly numbered route. Was a loop from US 501 South Boston to US 501 near Halifax. In July 1933, this became US 501 (which had been using current VA 129).
VA 322
From: SR 615 Williamsburg (James City County)
To: SR 612 Williamsburg (James City County)
Total Length: 3.95 miles

Creation: Appears on official issues back to 1961, but likely goes back to 1941. This is the 3rd VA 322.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Unknown
Comment: Includes collection of driveways for Eastern State Hospital; VA 322 appears in Rand McNally insets of Williamsburg.

From Dave Mantuori:
I was still living in Williamsburg when VDOT and the county built the road that separates Eastern State from the "James Blair Terrace / Dillard Complex" area of William & Mary. They installed a traffic light at the intersection (which they had just made into a 4-way cross street). Diagram:

---------------------------+ +---------------------------
---------------------------+ +----- ------------------ | | / / | | / / | | / / | | / / | |/ / | / / | / | / SR 615 | / Ironbound | / Road | | Note that Ironbound Road is the street on the EAST and SOUTH sides of the intersection, as Ironbound has always made a sharp turn here. This is also on the Williamsburg city line, with the city on the east side of the north-south road. SR 615 used to officially end here, but now it continues north on Longhill Connector Rd to its new terminus at SR 612, Longhill Road. The signage at the diagrammed intersection is interesting. Coming west on Ironbound past the W&M dormitories and the baseball stadium, the sign assembly reads: South North SR 615 VA 322 SR 615 (left arrow) (straight-ahead arrow) (right arrow) Coming north on Ironbound, before the little ramp, it looks like: North TO VA 322 SR 615 US 60 (left arrow) (straight-ahead arrow) (arrow for ramp) and there is another sign assembly at the light heading north, identical to the previous one ecept that the "TO US 60" signs are not there at all. Coming south on Longhill Connector one unsurprisingly sees: TO South US 60 SR 615 VA 322 (left arrow) (straight-ahead arrow) (right arrow) Note that in none of these signs is a direction for VA 322 ever given. Prior to the new road and the intersection's reconstruction, the sign assemblies used the small 1950s-ish cutouts. On Ironbound heading north it had "VA 322" and a left arrow, and "TO US 60" with a right-up diagonal arrow. On Ironbound heading west there was a "SR 615" and a left-up diagonal arrow, and "VA 322" with a straight-ahead arrow. I do not know what the signs look like coming OUT of Eastern State. The other end of VA 322 is at SR 612, Longhill Road. Oddly enough, SR 615 crosses VA 322 in the middle for some reason. It's been quite some time since I've been that far out Longhill so I don't know what the signs look like, only that there are VA 322 signs on that end. (But prior to the construction of the Longhill Connector there might NOT have been.)
Previous VA 322's: VA 322 #1: Created in 1923. Ran from VA 32 (curr US 15) Sprouse Corner west to Buckingham. This was renumbered as part of VA 13 in 1928. Today it is part of US 60.
VA 322 #2: Created in June 1931 as a new route: a spur from VA 321 (curr US 501) to the South Boston Airport. In July 1933 this became VA 152. Today it is part of SR 852.
VA 323
From: US 360 (Nottoway County)
To: US 460 (Nottoway County)
Total Length: 2.11 miles

Creation: Not on official maps. No other modern VA 323 has been found, so probably goes back to 1941. Serves the State Hospital east of Burkeville. This is the 2nd VA 323.
Adjustments: None
Posting: Shields exist at both US 360 & US 460
Comment: VA 323 is a 4-lane divided route at its ends.
Previous VA 323's: VA 323 #1: Appeared in 1923. Ran from VA 32 (curr US 15) Keysville to VA 10 (curr US 460 Bus) Blackstone. VA 323 was renumbered as four routes in 1929: VA 47 from Keysville to Lunenburg, part of VA 44 from Lunenburg to Victoria, VA 401 from Victoria to Kenbridge, and VA 48 from Kenbridge to Blackstone. Today all of these are part of VA 40.
VA 324
Bon Air Library, Richmond (Chesterfield County)
Total Length: 1.14 miles

Creation: Unknown. No other modern VA 324 has been found, so this may go back to 1941. This is the 2nd VA 324.
Adjustments: Likely none
Posting: Not posted
Comment: Per Dave, this public road is signed as "private".  Another VA 318.  Shown on the same Gousha map.
Previous VA 324's: VA 324 #1: Created in 1923 from VA 32 (curr US 15-VA 49) Clarksville to VA 12 (curr VA 92) Boydton. The 1923 map also shows this as VA 31, so 1923 may have been the year of transition from 31 to 324. VA 324 is shown as VA 201 on my 1928 Rand McNally. Today it is part of US 58.
VA 325
From: SR 651 Hanover (Hanover County)
To: Barrett Learning Center, Hanover County
Total Length: 0.95 mile

Creation: Unknown. This is the only modern VA 325 I know of, so may go back to 1941. This is the 2nd VA 325.
Adjustments: None
Posting: There is a reassurance marker in a shield at SR 651.
Comments: Does not appear of VDOT official maps, though there has been room; Barrett is a girls' facility
Previous VA 325's: VA 325 #1: Created in 1923; Originally ran from VA 32 (curr US 15 Bus) Leesburg west to Purcellville. By 1927 VA 325 was extended west to VA 37 (curr US 340) Berryville. In 1928, VA 325 was replaced by the original VA 251. Today it is part of VA 7. VA 325 is erroneously shown as VA 328 on the '27 Clasons Atlas.
