This style of painting, known in Chinese as "gongbi" is characterized by fine detail which unfortunately is not rendered by these photographs. Gongbi is an ancient Chinese style of painting that began around 400 BCE. It dominated Chinese painting for some 2000 years before loosing favor during the Yuan Dynasty (1300 AD). Up until recently quick-brush (Xie-yi) paintings of mountains, trees, water and so on has come to dominate painting in China while gongbi has been neglected. A revival in the ancient art form of gongbi has begun over the last twenty years or so. Jamie is a product of this revival as well as an innovator helping to shape the direction of modern gongbi painting. The paintings in this gallery will introduce you to copies of well known ancient paintings that Jamie painted as part of her training. These paintings also help one to appreciate the innovations in contemporary gongbi paintings represented by the paintings in the the People and Portrait Galleries. |
