MADISON
A small fire on the roof of Madison's Toki Middle School Friday
forced the evacuation of about 30 summer school students.
No one was hurt, and damage was contained to the roof, district
officials said.
Firefighters responded to a call at 12:23 p.m. and found flames
and heavy smoke on the southwest corner of the school's roof, 5606
Russett Road, said Madison Fire Department spokesman Jon Frank.
The fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes, he said. The
department is investigating the fire's origin.
A private construction crew was atop the school finishing a
re-roofing project using a heat-based process, said Doug Pearson,
district director of building services. He had no damage estimate,
but there appeared to be no internal damage.
As Paul Harvey would say, this is the rest of the story
The Mayor and his daughter Jenny were
cruising Orchard Ridge in the Mayor's large Ram 4 x 4 Dodge
truck. At the time the school was catching fire the Mayor
was driving down Russett Road. The Mayor and Jenny saw the
flames of the fire. The Mayor, taking immediate action,
pulled his trusty cell phone from his pocket, pulled over to the
curb, stopped the truck, and calmly called 911. After the
call was placed, the Mayor, being shy and modest, started his big
red truck and continued his Orchard Ridge observations.
Comments regarding the Mayor's deed
include:
"My dad is a hero for saving the
school."
"Why did he call the fire in, we
would have had a longer summer vacation if the school burned
down." |
