Late Summer Playlist

It's been awhile since the last one.  So here's the new one.  A bit shorter than usual because my filing system has gone wonky - ie I had a tidy up so there's no longer a heap of current faves on the floor.

  1. Broadcast.  The Noise Made By People.  Warp.  Tommy Boy CD1413.  The future is now and the future was Broadcast.  Take note people, Sheffield still produces excellent music.
  2. Appliance.  Six Modular Pieces.  Mute.  9134-2.  Appliance use a wide post-everything palette to draw up a musical Sextych.
  3. XTC.  Wasp Star (Apple Venus Vol 2).  TVT.  TVT 3260-2.  Swindon's greatest rock band were going to be the next Kinks or something, but got lost on the way due to contract disputes and stage fright.  This is their second platter after a belated comeback.  An English classic methinks.
  4. Kim Gordon.  SY5.   There doesn't appear to be a title this effort by Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon on SY's very own experimental label.  But there is lots of Japanese writing on the sleeve and Japenese women wailing and a gnashing their teeth.  Ouch!
  5. Isotope 217/Commander Mindfuck/Designer.  Aesthetics.  AST 06 LP.  Er, there's no title on this one either.  Commander M and Designer remix tracks from Chicago eggheads with radioactive results.  This is very serious stuff.  Use appropriate safety equipment.
  6. Spring Heel Jack.  Disappeared.  Thirsty Ear.  THI 57091.2.  No matter how hard I try I cannot get this CD of my hi-fi right now.  What at first appears to be standard Brit dance stuff, turns into an earfest of wonderment.  Guesting John Surman on bass clarinet alone is enough to grab the lapels of The Wire readers.  Disappeared doesn't; instead it takes a straight-line into new musical territories.  One of my top pix of the year so far.
  7. Thievery Corporation.  The Mirror Conspiracy.  ESL.  ESL 033.  This would irritate the hell out of Luke, if he ever surfed on here.  Luke is a pretty cool guy, even though he is a big Bluegrass fan.  He's got very broad tastes.  After I recommended this record he had a go on the Tower Records listening post.  He thought I was kidding after saying I thought it was one the CDs of the year.  Smooth suits, London dinner party music he thought.  Well, try yourself.  It is very smooth, but not in Kenny G way.  It reminds me of Tricky in a double breasted pinstripe.
