What do you do on a sicky? Well, one of things you can do is listen to that huge pile of CDs that you’ve had sitting there for awhile, but not played either because they’re a bit “difficult” or perhaps you forgot about them. First up some gnarliness from a gnarly Japanese geezer called Nobukazu Takemura “Sign”. He spends about 60 odd minutes – er, 60 ain’t an odd number is it? – f@#$ing wid yer heid. For several tracks young Nobby ropes in all these gnarly Chicago geezers like Bundy K Brown, Doug McCombs and John McEntire. Voila! You got Tortoise. That might explain why all these Japanese geezers were at the Tortoise gig at Shepherd’s Bush last year. Whatever, Nobby is pretty much like that other Japanese dude, Cornelius, in that he like mixing together lots of sounds against a steady beat, sometimes dance sometimes pop. There’s this 20 minute long opus (track 3, summat to do wid Chi-town) which is dead gnarly – half ambient drone wid cool drums, half twiddly electronics. Also comes with gnarly CD-ROM amination thingy, innit. Haven’t tried it, but I’m sure it’s gnarly. Pete’s rating* - ģЏαЯךﺰ Next up, it’s those crazy boys – Mike (Pair-of-dice, AKA µ-ziq) and Rich (ard D James, AKA Aphex Twin) – laying down groovy beats and keyboard stuff. The CD’s called “Rephlex”. It’s a bugger to get into with all that cellophane wrapping. Factory sealed for your protection, I suppose. Lots of great extra noises here like burps and, probably, RDJ doing a didgeridoo impersonation. Your webmeister says ♂♂♂♀ - hat’s off to Mike and Rich! For my next trick, it’s the Boards of Canada, sometimes nicknamed the Boreds of Canada. Well, I like all that lush ambient stuff, don’t you? But, why the silly name? Are these people Canadian or summat? Or does it have something to do with the Film Board of Canada which used to produce all those unfunny, totally impenetrable cartoons in the 60s and 70s? Answers on a postcard please. Film buff rates BoC - ☺☺☺☺☺/4 We’ve had Japanese, we’ve had Canadians (?) and we’ve had crazy guys. How about some Germans? Couch. “Profane”. Urgent ascending chord sequences, organ and twiddly electronic piano and gentle percussive beat. No nasty singing or whatever. Nice. Allemagne, dix point. For lunch I’m having mozzarella and the Willard Grant Conspiracy/Telefunk CD. It’s part of the “In a Fishtank” series put out by the Dutch label Konkurrent. The CD has a nice cyclist logo on it. And a frog, not a fish, but a frog. It’s a neat idea inviting touring bands to lay down tracks in short sessions. The Low/Dirty Three CD was ace if only for the mournful version of Neil Young’s “Down By the River”. Did I say that I’ve got tix for Mr Y at the sold out Brixton Academy gig? Woo-hoo. Anywho, the aforesaid CD is a collection of odd sods, trad songs, including “Grün, Grün” an old German song that my ex used to sing. I’m going to listen to it now. Why don’t you go and buy it? $$$$ out of ¥5000 From some Scandavavian country I played Alog next. It was one of these euro noise things. I don’t really remember much. rating - €45 But, this was followed by the marvellous Kante and “Zweilicht”. More Germans, yes. German lyrics, Ja. Hmm. But, a great mixture of good ol’ rock, quasi-spiritual stuff and modern dance musick. Oh, yes mister. I liked that one. ♫üüüüüüüüüüü♫ And, that’s probably enough for now. Hopefully will have another sicky too so I can catch up on the rest of my new stuff! December
