Play List - February 2001

A Random selection of stuff rifled from my collection which has been bolstered by some classic cuts - see if you can spot the latter.

Dr Dre.  The Chronic.  Interscope Records.  P2 50611.
Snoopdogg.  The Last Meal.  Priority Records.  P2 23225.
A brief foray into the surreal world of gangsta'.

Bob Dylan.  Bringing It All Back Home.  Columbia.  CK 9128.
Bob Dylan.  Time Out of Mind.  Columbia.  CK 68556
I finally got into Dylan.  The latter of these was co-produced by enigmatic Canadian Daniel Lanois: supremely haunting.

Miles Davis.  At Fillmore: Live At The Fillmore East.  Columbia/Legacy C2K 65139.
Miles Davis.  Get Up With It.  Columbia/Legacy C2K 63970.
Miles invents fusion and launches many a frizzy haircut, shiny shirt and white flares.

Duke Ellington.  Ellington At Newport 1956 (Complete)  Columbia/Legacy C2K 64932.
Rhode Island that would be.  Superb big band jazz.

Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Unledded.  No Quarter.  Fontana 526 362-2.
JP and RP shed of Bonham (RIP) and JP Jones, for this standout recicitative of timeless Led Zep catalogue and new Middle Eastern influenced stuff.  Compare...

Led Zeppelin.  BBC Sessions.  Atlantic 83061-2.
Led Zeppelin.  Remasters.  Atlantic 7567-80415-2.
Fascinating old recordings courtesy of the BBC, plus Zep's greatest hits.  So which do you prefer?  "Kashmir", "Achilles Last Stand", "Whole Lotta Love"?  Surely not "Stairway to Heaven"?

The Marquis de Tren and Bonny Billy.  get on jolly.  Palace Records.  PR24.
Bonnie "Prince" Billy.  i see a darkness.  Palace Records.  PR22.
A couple of offerings from Will Oldham, roots/alt country purveyor extraordinaire, and friends, including Mick Taylor from the Dirty Three on the former.

Jim White.  No Such Place.  Luka Bop.  72438-49911-2-8.
Doug Sahm & Friends.  The Best of Doug Sahm's Atlantic Sessions.  Rhino.  R2 71032.
More out there countrification.  Sahm - progenitor of Texas swing and White, crazy assed hill-billy.  On the former pick out "God Was Drunk When He Made Me": too right.

Primal Scream.  Exterminator.  Astralwerks.  asw49260-2.
Trans Am.  Red Line.  Thrill Jockey.  Thrill 087.
Radiohead.  Kid A.  Capitol.  7243 5 27753 2 3.
Shipping News.  Very soon, and in pleasant company.  Quarterstick  QS65CD.
A mixed four-pack: two of which deserve the praise heaped upon them - Kid A and XTRMNTR - and the other two which deserve better.  Red Line caps off a burst of work that has seen Trans Am reinvented as an electronica act.  Very soon... marks the death of June of 44 and SN's re-birth.

Chicago Underground Duo.  Synesthesia.  Thrill Jockey.  Thrill077.
Chicago Underground Duo.  12° of Freedom.  Thrill Jockey.  Thrill060.
Chicago Underground Trio.  Possible Cube.  Delmark.  DE-511
Chicago Underground Orchestra.  Playground.  Delmark.  DE-503
The various incarnations of cornet player Rob Mazurek and others from the thriving Chicago alternative scene.  Underground pumps out a neo-bop groove with Synesthesia its most original take so far.  Fabulous in support of Isotope 217, another Mazurek project, at DC's Metro Cafe back in January's snows.
