Assorted gigs
from '99
10 November: Stereolab, supported by
Dymaxion. 9:30 Club, Washington D.C.
What can I say?
The mighty Stereolab blew away D.C.'s dull collegians and dreary
bureaucrats. Groovy euro stylings; at the front of the post-rock
non-revolution; Kraut Rock (Neu, Kraftwerk), 50's lounge lizard,
Michel Legrand influences.
10 September: June of '44, supported by ,
Black Cat, Washington, D.C.
An opening act sort of
a Klezmer/Americana mixture followed by stripped down indie-rock from
Italian pretenders, 3 Second Kiss, on their first US tour.
June of '44 pulled
out all the stops. A diverse set covering the highlights of this
year's Anahata (one of my albums of the year) including the
superb "Cardiac Atlas" and "Equators Bi-Polar"
plus "Anisette" from Tropics and Meridians. One
of the best maritime fixated bands to come of of Louisville for a long
time.
4 September: Labradford, supported by
godspeed you black emperor! 9:30 Club, Washington D.C.
Brrr! It was
darn cold in 9:30 Club. Slight overkill on the ol' air
conditioning. Half the audience left after godspeed! Don't
think it was the air conditioning. This was an absolutely
stunning performance. All the rumours are right - this is an
unbelievable collective. Such colour and dynamic.
Labradford were good too, but couldn't compare to the pinnacles scaled
by godspeed!
13 August: International Brain Degeneration
Revue. 9:30 Club, Washington, D.C.
- IQU - Seattle
based turntable, guitar and electronic trio.
- Cornelius -
Japanese studio wizard, Keigo Oyamada, with "Planet of the
Apes" and Beach Boys fixation. Keigo was recovering
from a dodgy roadside hot dog, but got through his set culled from
one of 1998's top albums "Fantasma" which is an eclectic
mix of sounds from "Pet Sounds" to dub to cutesy
Nip-pop.
- Sebadoh -
Grunge graduates laying down nice harmonies.
- Robyn Hitchcock
- crazy Limey. "Sea-Tac, Sea-Tac. They got great
coffee and they got great crack."
- Flaming Lips -
Deafness threatening psycho-delia.
A long and exhausting
night.
