Southern White Rhinoceros in
Orana Wildlife Park
  • Orana Park is the first Zoo in New Zealand to breed the Southern White Rhino.
  • It is hoping that the presence of a calf will help to stimulate the second female.
  • The birth is especially important in that both parents were captive born. Apparently only 8% of Captive Born animals breed.

  • May 2004. Ibutho, now four years old has been sent to a new home at Monarto Zoo. He will eventually become the breeding male there.
There is a poulation of four rhinos(2.2.)

The Males

  • Cyrano. He is a captive born animal.
  • Stumpy
  • Ibutho, born 1999, he is a son of Utani and Cyrano. In May 2004 he was sent to Monarto.

The Females

  • Utani, mother to Ibutho. She too is captive born.
  • Mapenzi
