BOOK OF MATHEMATICS

Is it unusual for a home page to have a section on Mathematics ??. We like mathematics so much that we could not help having one.

What can be there in this section ? To start with let me give you a puzzle written in the form of a poem. This is written in Sanskrit by 'Bhaskara' an ancient Indian Mathematician and translated by Umesh P.N Elanthur, a close friend of mine. (Both these individuals will be introduced in this page as we proceed). The poem is a direct translation of the Sanskrit original. Please send your answer to this puzzle in my mail address and probably a few of us can get together and start a lively 'mathematical corner' in this section. I will put the correct answer here on August 1.

Puzzle 1
(Correct Answers and winners)

One couple was once making love,
When her necklace broke somehow.
There were a lot of precious gems,
They searched and could find all of them.
One-third they got from the ground,
One-fifth on the bed they found,
One-sixth in her hand she got,
One-tenth with some skill he caught,
The rest - six gems - were on the thread,
Tell, how many gems ? all I have said !
