You need a way of identifying each of the 36 goldsmiths, through the coins that they make.This is easily possible, by first numbering each of the goldsmiths and linking the number to that of the gold coin he made.Thus, take one coin from the 1st goldsmith, two from the second, three from the 3rd and so on. When you weigh them all to gether, the actual weight shd be (1+2+3+.....36)x8 gms. The defeciency if any, divided by 8, will give a number, which idntifies the goldsmith.Well, the problem assumes that the goldsmith always makes a coin 1 gm short. if this is intermittent, we don't have a solution.
