BakePacker & Adventure Foods

The BakePacker is the greatest thing since the invention of the camp stove.  I have done the majority of my camp cooking with a 'BakePacker' for years.  If you don't have one, I recommend you get one!    It's a simple metal grid that allows you to cook just about anything including baked goods.  All cooking is done in a plastic bag making clean up a matter of disposing of the bag. Muffins, Pizza, incredible Omelets, even Pecan Pie,  and more.  It comes with instructions and a cook book with some wonderful and simple recipes.  Visit Adventure Foods for detailed information.  You can pre pack  your own meals, or purchase pre packed meals, even custom order your pre-packed meals.  Simply add moist ingredients to the bag when your ready to cook,  and  drop them in the pot.   Great for backpacking, in the boat galley, RV, cabin or on the trial.   It's quick and simple and the food you can produce is a delight.    It comes in two sizes, Ultra Light (small), and Standard (large).  The small version is suitable for backpacking and serves one with ease.  The larger Standard version is larger and will feed two or more.

This is my trusty old BakePacker after at least 10 years of lots of use.

Adventure Foods also pre-packages BakePacker meals and freeze dried foods, and for $0.50 per meal they will custom pack meals for special diets!  They also have 'cold prep' items that require no cooking or hot water, such as Mud Pie Bars &  Banana Cream Bars, and more.   I'm looking forward to trying their French Toast Casserole and many other selections on the Serum Run.  If you visit their site I recommend you download their Brochure (pdf format) and look it over.  The Brochure explains their products and services more so than the web site.

Since I love cooking with the BakePacker, I wanted to see if I could plan most of my Serum Run meals using it.  In my search to see if anybody pre-packed meals for the BakePacker I found Adventure Foods and am impressed by the variety of their food products.  They are not a large factory producing high dollar products at the cheapest prices.  While their pricing comparable to most freeze dried products. They attempt to use healthy real ingredients rather than chemicals to artificially produce a desired taste.

I wanted food I that required no special storage or handling, light and compact, and easy to make.

Working with Adventure foods has been a real delight.  It's like having your own custom food supplier.  Right down to what kind of meat you'd like in your spaghetti sauce and how much, or if  you want butter in your  maple syrup,  and how you want things packaged!  Very personal service and the ability to pre-pack meals to suit your tastes.  Beats the heck out of going to the store and pulling pre-packed meals off the shelf or trying to mix them yourself.   My e-mail to them was answered within hours, and Jean Spangenberg  (the owner) is making it a real pleasure setting up the food menu!  I Highly recommend Adventure Foods as a food source!!

Cons

Expense: Comparable to freeze dried meals, but you get more variety and the ability to customize your meals.  BakePacker meals can be made less expensively at home or on the trail with normal grocery store products.
Some freeze dried items may not taste a good as one might hope.  I'll let you know how Adventures Foods products taste after I've tried them.
Not as simple as throwing a vacuum packed pre-cooked meal in boiling water.  The hot meals do require a little preparation.

Field Notes

Dave and I planned at least 14 days of hardy breakfast and dinner meals, intending on eating snacks on the trail for lunch.  Our 14 day supply came in two shipment.  I must say I am very pleased with the packaging.  From looking at the size of the meals I would have to say when it says that it serves 4, it probably will serve 4.  Looks like good sized servings.  The instructions are clearly listed on the label, and everything is in reusable zip log sealed bags.   I'm impressed!  Thank You Jean!

Take a look at some of the treats we will be eating on the trial.

We are starting most days with a combination of blue berry pancakes, French toast casserole, sausage and cheese - omelet, biscuit, or casserole.  For our dinner meals we set up a variety of entrees most accompanied by a bread or desert bread/cake or pecan pie.  Entrees include, Cranberry Walnut Chicken, Zita pasta and sauce, Beef stew, Chicken Stew, and Southern Chicken and dumplings.  And of course cold prep deserts for possible evening snacks or trail treats.  We also should have plenty of dehydrated butter, syrup and honey.

We sampled the Whole Grain Garlic Bread!  Between Dave and I we couldn't eat the entire loaf.  It is heavy with whole grains, making it heavier than a regular loaf of bread, but what a treat on the trail.

Cold Prep Sweet treats

A sample of the Mud pie bar was amazing. You are tempted to add more than a tablespoon of water, but don't.  You will be surprised how easy and quickly the tbs of water mixes with the ingredients.  It mixes to a thick dough  texture which was easy to handle with fingers or keep in the bag and eat.  After letting the bar sit a while it was like a moist homemade cookie, very tasty. Better than any nutrition bars!

Adventure Foods supplies the BakePacker and pre-package meals and freeze dried foods.  Prices vary depending on item and size.  They will customize most products for you if you desire and are great to work with! E-mail is answered promptly.  Download their brochure in .pdf format for a more detailed explanation of their products and services.
The BakePacker is available from other source too.  REI often carries the smaller version of the BackPacker but I have yet to find pre-pack meals for it at REI.
