Henry PAWLING was born in 1689 in New York. He died on Aug 30, 1739 in Perkiomen Township, Phildelphia/Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania. He was buried in Sep 1739. Henry II Pawling moved to Pennsylvania by September, 1719. In 1715 he wasin Ulster County, New York, serving in the militia. He settled on aplantation of five hundred acres at the confluence of the Schuykill andPerkiomen, opposite what later became the almost sacred hills of ValleyForge. To the early settlers this region was known as the fat land of theEgypt District, and the analogy is close between these fair lands, soregularly inundated by the spring freshets and encrusted with the richalluvial soil brought down by the upper river, and those in the Eastenriched by the life-giving overflow of the Nile. (Please excuse theplagiarism.) Henry devoted himself to agriculture and reaped acompetence. The inventory of his real and personal estate included: eightslaves, eight horses, twenty-five cattle, thirty-one sheep and fouteenpigs.

From an early date the Pawlings were promnently identified with theEpiscopal Church of St. James at Perkiomen. At the first recorded meetingof its vestry, October 2, 1737, Henry was present as a vestryman. In June1738, he was a church warden. In its grounds he was buried and there agranite stone still plainly records: "In memory of Henry Pawling who diedAugust the 30th 1739. Aged 50 years." Parents: Henry (Paelding) PAWLING and Neeltje\Noeltje Albertse ROOSA.

Henry (Paelding) PAWLING was born about 1650 in Padbury Buckinghamshire, England. He was buried in Mar 1694/95. He died on Mar 25, 1695 in Hurley, Ulster County, New York. Captain Henry (Hendrick) Pawling (also sometimes spelled Palingh, Pawlin,Pawlingh, Paelingh, Paeldin, Paelding, Paelden, Paulin, Pauldin, andPaelwdin) was probably born in Padsbury, England. He maried Noeltje (AlsoNeelije, Neeltje) Roosa (also sometimes Roos and Roose), November 3,1676, in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. He died in 1692 inMarbletown, New York. His will was dated January 21, 1691; it wasprobated March 25, 1695. Noeltje Roosa, a daughter of Allert HeymansRoosa and Wintje Arens, was born in Holland and came with her parentsfrom Holland in 1660. Her family is described in Chapter V, THE DUTCHANCESTORS. Her date of birth was about 1652.

Henry came to America on the ship Bantekoe, probably from Padbury,Buckinghamshire, England. Henry came in the Duke of York expedition underCol. Richard Nicols. He was introduced to his wife by Peter Styvesant. Hereceived a land grant of 1000 acres from William Penn in Providence,Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a captain and served under ColonelRichard Nicholls to protect Kingston, which was also known as Esopus orWiltwyck prior to September 1669, from the Indians. Kingston was thefirst capital of the state of New York. In 1670 he was appointed captainof a foot company to protect Marbletown and Hurley and Wiltwyck. In 1676he signed a petition for a pastor to be able to preach in English andDutch. He was a member of the Governor's Council levying and collectingtaxes. He served on many high commissions. He purchased 7,000 acres ofland in Philadelphia County which would later belong to the MennoniteZieglers and the Pawlings. Eventually he settled in Marbletown, New York, where he raised his family and died in 1692. From 1865 to 1689 he servedas high sheriff of Ulster County, New York. In 1689, he again aidedagainst the Indians. Pawling, New York was named after his son, Albert. His will is dated August 25, 1695.

Henry Pawling was a litigious person and his name appears in many, manyrecords of the Court at Wiltwyck, of which he was a Commissioner fromtime to time.

After Henry Hudson discovered the river named for him in 1609, access waspossible to the lands which were to be "purchased" from the NativeAmerican peoples by the patentees. A patent is a grant given by agovernment for exclusive right to own a determined amount of land. Before1695 Henry Pawling applied for a grant to purchase property from theIndians in what is today Dutchess County, but he died before it wasgranted. Therefore the patent for the 4,000 acres was given in 1696 tohis widow and children. Can you imagine the value of 4,000 acres alongthe Hudson River of today - the area of Hyde Park, Rheinbeck andPoughkeepsie, New York? Parents: Levi (Colonel) PAWLING.
