She was buried in Jan 1877 in Olive Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. Elizabeth A. (or S.) Moyer was born in Montgomery County (Philadelphiaarea), Pennsylvania, January 25, 1814. She came from a distinguishedfamily - one of the first to settle in historic Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

She came west to Harmony in Butler County, when she was a young girl, with her family. In Harmony she met and married Wilhelm (William) Lutz, ayoung farmer. She took confirmation in the Lutheran Church and wasbaptized in his faith, even though she came from a distinguishedMennonite family. When her husband traveled west to homestead land in St.Joseph County, Indiana, she remained behind with her large family ofeighteen children. After William Lutz had established himself as a farmerand bridge-builder, he sent for his family. They traveled by train fromHarmony to Wakarusa, Indiana. Since Elizabeth could not read or write shehad to depend on the directions of the conductor to know where to alightand when to retrain. She also was a very humble person, given herbackground. When the train screeched to a halt in the station atWakarusa, the conductor announced, "Ladies and children first."
Elizabeth stepped back, for she did not consider herself a "Lady."

When she counted the children there were only seventeen. She rushed backonto the train to find Benjamin asleep on one of the benches.

She adjusted to life on the frontier with grace and endured the hardshipsthrough stalwart faith and Christian perseverance.

When the Civil War began she gave two of her sons to the Union effort. However the great sadness was the loss of all of her other children. Oneby one she nursed them and when they died she took their children intoher home. Several of her grandchildren died as well. She was bereftbeyond human understanding, but when her boys came home safely, her heartbegan to heal.

She predeceased her husband during the winter of 1877. She was only 62years old, but the one extant photograph of her indicates graphically theterrible weight of her burden and the result of her many years of hardwork and profound grief.

Samuel Ziegler MOYER was born in Feb 1772 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He died on Dec 12, 1857 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Dec 1857 in Mennonite Meeting House Cemetery north of Harmony, Pa. The Moyer family moved to Lancaster Township, in Butler County,Pennsylvania, shortly after Sophronia's death. THE HISTORY OF BUTLERCOUNTY, PA, published in 1895 says: "In 1817 Henry Rice and George Kneissmoved up from Harmony, and Samuel Moyer from Northampton County." It wasafter the move that the name came to be spelled "Moyer" rather than"Meyer."

The Moyers appeared to have moved west with other Mennonite families toestablish a community there. Susannah's father, John Boyer was a ministerfor the group.

In the 1820 census, Samuel appears in Connequenessing Township, ButlerCounty, Pennsylvania, with his household containing two males between0-10, two males 10-16, one male 16-18, one male 18-26 and one male 45+.Females were two 0-10, one 10-16, one 26-45. Because of the way arelisted in this census, overlap is likely.

The children of those who moved west don't appear to have shared theirforefather's strong Mennonite convictions. On April 1, 1836, about 20years after the move, a number of Samuel Moyer and John Moyer's childrenwere baptized at the Lutheran Church. Elizabeth, Maria and Maria'shusband Samuel - who was the son of John Boyer - were baptized.

The 1850 Census lists Samuel as living alone near his son Joseph in WestConnequenessing Township, Butler County. Susannah died 1 April 1850 of afever.

Samuel is named in his father's estate papers. His tombstone at theMennonite Meeting House just north of Harmony, says he died December 25,1857, at 84 years and 10 months of age. Information on the family is alsoavailable in THE ZIEGLER FAMILY AND RELATED FAMILIES IN PENNSYLVANIA, byGertrude Mohlin Ziegler, pages 297, 300 and 300 and the genealogical cardfile at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society.

Two children are listed in Samuel's estate records in Butler CountyEstate File M132. Samuel's birth date comes from his listing for theMennonite and Grace Reformed cemetery in "Butler County's CemeteryInventory Vol. 4," by the Butler County Historical Society, page 18.

Deborah's approximate date and husband are on page 10; Benjamin page 4;and Abraham, page 15.

A Catherine Ziegler is also listed on Page 6 (?). A Joseph who was bornin 1822, was listed on page 9 but that reference is likely to be one ofthe younger Samuel's sons, who was born in that year. Maria andElizabeth's birth dates and husbands' names are listed in theirconfirmation records in "St. Paul's Lutheran and Reformed Church,Zelienople, Butler County, Pennsylvania," transcribed by Gertrude MohlinZiegler, page 8.

Although the married names of Samuel's daughters are listed in hisestate papers, the husband's first names are not. The first names of thehusbands of Sarah, Catherine, Susan and Nancy come from the Ziegler book.In addition to the children cited above, a Rebecca, wife of Jacob Shaffer- is mentioned as a child in the Ziegler book. Parents: Moyer (Meyer) BENJAMIN and Catherine ZIEGLER.

Spouse: Susanna BOYER.
