They helped to raise Howard andFrank, the children of his brother, Henry Lutz, when their mother died.Sylvester was probably a difficult name for them to pronounce. "UncleWes" was a fine carpenter. He farmed and helped at various time with thechickens.

A lovely item appeared in the newspaper when Sylvester and Cora weremarried:

"On Sabbath morning Sylvester Lutz and Miss Cora Sill, both of thisplace, stole a march on their friends and appeared in the morning at theMethodist Episcopal Church, having been married in Ashland at an earlyhour. They were accompanied by James Richards and Miss Sara Lutz, sisterof the groom.

"After services were over the audience learning of the situation at oncebegan to bestow upion this worthy couple congratulations and best wishesfor their future welfare.

"Mr. Lutz is a gentleman in every sense of the word, a loyal Christianand altogether one who is able to make bright the life of her whom he hasso wisely chosen. The bride is, indeed, a most lovely lady, one we havealways admired and loved for her many excellent qualities. We are glad tohave such worthy young people take up their abode among us. They willlive in Mrs. Charles Closson's property, at which place we are sure wewill always find the latch string out."

December 11, 1954, The ASHLAND TIME GAZETTE published the followingnotice:

"Sylvester Lutz, 87, Nankin, died at Samaritan Hospital Saturday evening.A carpenter by trade, he was the son of Abraham and Catherne Thomas Lutzand was born October 5, 1867, in Milton Township, Ashland County. He waspreceded in death by his wife, Cora Sill Lutz, whom he married February1, 1903, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

"Surviving him are one daughter, Mrs. Samuel harry of Wichita, Kansas,one granddaughter, two great grandchildren, and two sisters: Mrs. JamesRichards and Myrtle Lutz; two brothers, George and John, all ofNankin.... Burial will be made in the Nankin Cemetery." Parents: Abraham LUTZ and Catherine Baum THOMAS.

He died on Aug 22, 1888 near Wakarusa, St. Joseph County, Indiana. Wilhelm Lutz was born in West Connoquenessing Township, near Harmony inButler County, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Moyer at Harmony in1835. Harmony was the original home of a German Lutheran sect known asthe Harmonists. They practiced celibacy, lived a simple, communallifestyle, emphasizing creativity, frugality, and industry.

The church he attended in Zelienople, Pennsylvania had the official nameof The German United Evangelical Protestant Congregation of St. Peter'sChurch of the Borough of Zelienople. It was incorporated January 18,1873, on presentation of petition and constitution to the court of commonpleas. Henry Lutz' signature appears on the petition as one of thevestrymen. One of the other signers was Wilhelm Lutz. Services at thistime were being held in the Presbyterian Church. In 1861 a frame buildingwas erected at a cost of $ 8,000. By 1898 there were 100 members.

After most of his family had been born he emigrated to homestead land innorthwestern Indiana. Here he carved a farm out of the wilderness. Thefarm is located along the county line between Elkhart and St. JosephCounty, northwest of Wakarusa. When he was established he sent for hisfamily - his wife and eighteen children, who followed him by rail.

In 1860 he was 47 years old and was living at the above described farmwhich was valued at $ 700 and his personal estate was valued at $ 250.His address was given as RR Mishawaka, Indiana.

At this time his family included his wife, Elizabeth, age 40; Isaac, 20;Sidney, 19; Edmund, 17; Elias, 16; Benjamin, 14; Harmon, 12; Alfred, 10;Sarah, 8,; and Cyrus, age 6.

Ten years later the 57 year old farmer was still living in MadisonTownship, St. Joseph County, but his estate was now valued at $ 10,000and his personal estate at $ 1,100.

Elizabeth was now 56 and Sarah was 17. The boys were listed as Jacob, 30,a carpenter; Eli, 26, a carpenter; Benjamin, 22, farm laborer; Harmon,21, farm laborer; Albert, 18, farm laborer; Cyrus, born in Indiana, age14, farm laborer; Almon, born in Ohio, age 5; and Getha Staufer, born inIndiana, age 12.

William was a farmer and bridge builder by trade. He contributedgenerously to the construction of the Lutheran Church in Wakarusa,Indiana.

He worked hard all his life and most assuredly was grief-stricken beyondbelief by the death of most of his children in this new and forbiddingwilderness. When he died he was buried beside his beloved Elizabeth inthe Olive Township Mennonite Cemetery nine miles north of Wakarusa. Parents: Johannes LUTZ and Maria Anna STEINMETZ.
