We adopted Max in 1981 from the local humane society. He was a beauty from day one and he was my own, personal sweetheart! We didn't have any other pets while we lived with him, so he completely ruled the house! He blessed us with 19 years of love, friendship, and memories. He was put to rest in July this year. He rests now in our garden and watches the little ones from above. I will always miss him.
Max was an indoor cat, which I believe is one reason he lived so long. I did let him outside, but only on a leash, and I was always there to watch him. (He never did learn how not to get tangled up)! He never faced the dangers that outdoor cats face: cars, dogs, fights and diseases from other cats. I believe that a cat's geneology is an important factor in how long a cat will live, but the protection that an indoor cat has is insurance that he will have the chance to live to a healthy old age.
