James Madison Pyatt was born December 31, 1851 to Isreal 'Izri' J and Mary J Craig Pyatt and died September 19, 1937. He married on August 20, 1874, in Pickneyville, Perry County, Illinois, Harriet E 'Hattie' Brown who was born March 14, 1853 in Illinois and who died May 1, 1936. James and Hattie are buried in the Northwest section of Galum Presbyterian Cemetery in Perry County, Illinois along with much of James' family.

In the July 23, 1897, issue of the "Du Quoin Tribune" published in Perry County, Illinois, James and his son, Frank, are listed as having attended the wedding celebration of George and Olive Wham Pyatt. George was James' younger brother. Also in attendance were several other of their siblings including: John Pyatt and his son, Raymond; Francis Pyatt Baird and her husband Porter and daughter, Florence; Anna Pyatt Jackson and her husband, William and children, Mary and Pyatt; and Nettie and Mary Pyatt.
