Welcome to our family tree

This is the provable Davis tree. I have loads more information but it is difficult to link before the first census in 1841 to Levy Davis who we know is definitely our Grandfather. Around 1816 when the first provable Isaac was born there were about 20 Davis families living around Whitechapel with sons called Isaac Davis, all born about the same time or within one year of our Isaac Davis. About 6 of them had fathers who were marked as foreign, one from Russia, one from Poland, one from Germany and two from Holland. All of which could be our ancestor.

I have used various colours to highlight the different generations and families so it is more clear and easier to see at a glance. Most of the families use all of the same names and I was getting muddled with brothers/sisters, aunts/uncles with the same names. When my head started throbbing I did this page to print so I could see the ages clearly and thought it might be better for you too.

The colour codes

Isaac born 1816 and family are Blue
Judah Davis born 1834 and family are Red
Isaac born 1856 and family are Green, including his wife Esther Melhado.
Levy and his family are Navy

I don't think there is any such person as Indal! I thought I would research East Street to see if I can discover anything I missed and I looked at every census record for more information and realised that what I thought was Indal is actually Judah. But it looks like Indal until you zoom in. Here is a blown up view so you can see for yourself why I thought it said Indal:

1871 Census for Elliots Road, Newington.

And whoever researched it for the Ancestry web site also got it wrong Click here to see

Levy and Hannahs children: After 1901 - Facts at a glance:

Missing information and dates provided by Georgie and Joyce gained from Alice (please let me know if anything is wrong because the year of my Dads birth made him 1 year younger than he is). Today 61-63 East Street is a Hal-Al Butchers. 65 East Street is a Beauty Salon and 54 is a Fish Wholesaler and DIY Shop. Here is a map of the streets they lived in. You can see how close they lived to each other.

Isaac and Rosettas parents were more likely to have come from Holland or Poland: Click here for history of how the Jewish community came to Whitechapel in the 1700s and early 1800s. Isaacs wife Esther Melhado definitely was a Dutch Jew descendent.
