Game Review
The Linfield HCS game came down to a three minute game with Linfield playing well in two of those minutes and HCS playing well in last minute of the three. But in the end it was one minute too short as Linfield won 60-57.Although not playing well in this game, HCS pretty well had control of the game thru three quarters 43-40. Linfield took the fourth quarter 20-14. The game was still undecided with three minutes to go but Linfield played just well enough. HCS made a wild surge in the final minute and actually had several chances to tie it but the ball just did not fall in. Senior Josh Hamilton had an off night despite 16 points and 10 steals for a double double but it took over 21 attempts from the field to get ten points. Many of his shots were forced. Lorne Barton had a double double with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Lorne's defensive effort on Linfield's big man was not enough and Linfield got some easy points. Trevor Wagstaffe and Billy Hague just did not pull the trigger when shots were available to them. Nate Glass had a critical technical foul at a very ill timed moment which turned momentum over to Linfield. Zach Howard had several turnovers a critical moments as did Wagstaffe. Again HCS was awful from the charity line shooting 53%. If they had made 3 more free throws (they were 10-19) they would have tied the game. Until the free throw problem is solved, this season ends in mid February. In the end it looked like HCS just didn't want to lose the game while Linfield looked like they wanted to win it and that was the difference in the final quarter. There was disorganization, and physical and mental mistakes made by the Patriots which caused the loss. HCS is now 3-2 and plays arch rival Apple Valley Christian for third place. Linfield will play Brethren Christian for the championship, the first time in a number of years that a High Desert team was not in the finals at the HCS Holiday Classic.
Game Preview
Hesperia Christian meets Linfield Christian, another Div IV team from Temecula, in the semifinals of the HCS Holiday Classic. HCS comes off a strong victory over Vasquez while Linfield beat Victor Valley Christian handily 82-61. Linfield likes to jump out to early leads. They will be lead by Chuck Wilson who had 21 points last Wednesday. But they do a good job of spreading the points around. Burgin, Lindsey, Caines, Street and Wold all scored in double figures. This will require HCS to really play defense with all five players on the floor. HCS beat Linfield last season at home 76-55. They played at Linfield Christian two years ago and eeked out a 62-58 victory in the final minute. HCS is presently 3-1.
