Jose was born in Madrid, but never picked up a heavy accent because he moved almost immediately afterwards to Barstow, CA. Jose was a twin, born at the same time as his brother Gabriel, now Abyss. Gabriel was always a bad child, getting into fights and getting bad grades, while his twin was the polar opposite. Their father, Jose Chacon Sr., now Aqua, worked at a lab a little ways out of town, and was prone to being gone for long periods of time. One day, Jose Sr. took his sons with him to work, but had to leave for a while, leaving them in the hands of another scientist. Gabriel's powers chose this moment to manifest themselves, his dimensional warping portal flickering to life suddenly, then fading away immediately. The other scientist saw this, and (being an avid mutant hater) took them immediately into a radiation chamber to do studies on how they reacted to it. Gabriel's body had become better able to handle radiation due to the radiation caused by his powers, but Joe was mutated because of it, his body creating huge biometallic wings. Gabriel didn't hesitate to send the other scientist to another dimension, then the twins left for a life of crime.

Joe was the first to bring up giving up a life of crime, and Abyss took it as mutiny, shooting his brother 3 times in an alley. Abyss left his brother bleeding and dying in the alley. Luckily, Sizzle heard the shots and came to rescue him. Sizzle took him in and helped him get better. Joe thought it fitting to join Sizzle's team later.
