When turning between centres a catchplate replaces either the 3 or 4 jaw chuck. The protruding peg on the catchplate strikes the tail of the lathe carrier attached to the workpiece giving it rotation. |

When the workpeice extends more than 3 times its diameter, an outer bearing is called for. Most common outer bearings are the tailstock centre and the three point fixed steady. The fixed steady is used to support the outer end of the workpiece when facing, centre drilling, conventional drilling reaming and boring operations. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The
travelling steady is used to support long slender work during turning and screwcutting
operations. The travelling steady is fastened to the saddle of the lathe, its
pegs adjusted to contact the workpiece. As the cutting tool moves along the
workpiece, so does the travelling steady. The pegs on the travelling steady stops the work from flexing during turning and screwcutting operations. |
