Heroes in Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, can easily turn a battle around if leveled enough. All the heroes have a variety of special techniques that will help you destroy your enemies.
They all have 4 techniques and 1 technique that they gain at lvl6. Their levels max out at level 10, and you can have up to 3 heroes, but must have that many upgrades on your main base.
Heroes also can pick up and put items in there inventory for use later or for use to help them gain a special ability (i.e.-life leach) or if they find a tome, click on it right away to gain what the tome gives.
Heroes also take up food supplies (5 food, per hero), which maxes out at 90, so you might not want to have 3 heroes. (i.e.-25 workers, 25 food, and then 3 heroes, another 15 food and that only leaves room for 40 food for soldiers, which might only get u about 8 fighters, which is not a strong army.)

Warcraft III News: Patch 1.02 arrived fixing minor problems with the devourer abusing Dragons and such, not many changes... Diablo II News: Users await the new patch fixing dupes, weakening and giving more power to skills, and giving new items and giving items modulations that are found after the patch is released, which is scheduled to come out in Late November.
