Hirelings (A.k.a.-Mercenarys, or Merc's) are commonly used while/after leveling a character, also prefered to be used while Magic Finding (mf'ing.
The best places to level these Hirelings are as the followed...
lvl-5-20 Normal Cows/Blood Runs
lvl20-55 Nightmare cows
lvl55+ Hell cows (if equiped well enough)
What depends on the merc's strength later on is the equipment/what act it was bought in. Such as, a normal merc would be the strongest later on in the higher levels (i.e.- level 55 norm, would be equivelant to a level 70 Hell). If bought in Normal, they will gain special abilites the Hell and all of the skills the Nightmare don't get. Such as a Normal barb merc, it would get higher level of Natural Resistance, and more enhanced damage, or if it was defensive, Iron skin.
But, Equipment can also make a merc A LOT more strong, such as equiped with a vampire gaze, a shaftstop, and a strong weapon, the merc will be about 3x as strong as it normally would be with just some extra junk.
Mercenary can give the game a lot more depth and give you something more to buy a equipment for, and a little something more to level.
