Starlight and Starlight 2

This is only the beginning of a much nicer Starflight page which I hope will someday pop up here.

If you already know about Starflight and Starflight 2, you wont find anything new here.

But for those of you who don't know, Starflight is an old game which popped up in the eighties - yes, when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth SHUT UP!

Most games these days, as you may have noticed, are great for graphics but have all the flavour of a carboard box - you can imagine millions of underpaid programmers slaving away at computer terminals for a giant megacorporation, creating these things, these bland bored tired games whose only redeemable feature is flashy graphics. Any storyline present at all is nothing but CLICHÉ CLICHÉ CLICHÉ. Guy with big chin blows up stuff and you see blood, big deal. If I want to see something that crappy, I'll watch reruns of the A-Team.

I dream of a return to the days when 6 programmers on a team was an extravagance. Back in those days a little known word called 'creativity' (you may have heard of it) snuck into the code and made a game greater than the sum of its parts. Programmers actually LOVED their work and LOVED their projects - and you can actually see it in their games.

And Starflight 1 and 2 are both a very good example of such games.

The games are set in the future - you are equipped with a low class starship with an untrained crew, a few dollars and a problem of cataclysmic proportions. Its up to you to save the human race. In the process you must talk to aliens, buy and trade goods, seek information, search for artifacts to name just a few things. But one of the most amazing elements for a game which spans 2 double density diskettes is the fact that each game contains 800 DISTINCT PLANETS with HUGE surfaces, each of which can take MONTHS to explore.

I spent my teenage years exploring new worlds, finding new life forms, trading with Humna Humna, blowing up Uhlek, picking on the Dweenle and provoking the Spemin, while other kids were busy playing with themselves.

Starflight is, well, a fantastic game, which is why I am part of a group of people currently in the process of making STARFLIGHT 3 !!!!!!! Check the Sensible Links page.

Starflight can also be downloaded from some sites on the net - You'll find them in the links section... whenever that is completed
