Resident Evil 1985? You Guessed it.

logo.gif (21672 bytes)The game that revolutionized sidescrollers is known as Ghost n Goblins.

It was ported to the NES from the original Arcade version and now is on

the Game Boy Color. The game is based upon the NES version, not the

arcade one. The game spawned one of the best platformers on the SNES,

Super Ghouls n Ghost, which was the first game I bought for the system. This little

version is just as intense as the original with one extra feature, passwords. When you

complete a level a password is presented to the player for all their hard work. Let

me tell you now; this game is hard. No let me tell you again because you had a

hoagie in your ear. This game is VERY hard. I mean pulling your hair, shredding your

skin, shooting your friends hard. It is for the appreciative gamer only as the game is

challenging. It also keeps a high level of atmosphere with all the zombies and creatures

lurking about the countryside. Here's hoping the sequel is released on the SNES.

Graphics

I have never played the original arcade version but I have played Ghouls & Ghost on the

Genesis as well as a version on the Turbo Graphix. From what I've heard the NES didn't

do this game justice but I will tell you not to listen to those tight assed sissies. The graphics

are very clean and clear with bright vibrant colors. The characters are wonderfully animated and

look identical to the old entertainment system. Like Mario DX, this game oozes with nostalgia from

every zombie to the red demons that swoop down to satan-ize you. Beautiful levels with tons of

secrets is the special of the day here. Each level has its own unique theme from lava to ice it's all

here.

Sound

The main theme is so memorable that even a new born baby could recognize it. The original

composition is an epically catchy song that captured the hearts of millions of gamers years ago. The other

sounds are your run of the mill "bloops" and "bleeps".

Gameplay

Ever seen a small child on the side of the road and wanted to run over him? Well after playing a few

levels of this game you will want to run that tyke down and back over him multiple times from the

rage. This game is difficult. The first level gets you acquainted with the play mechanics of GNG but

rapidly throws you in the middle of flying knights, demons, killer plants and giant bosses. The games main

problem is the jumping from one platform to the next. Sometimes you'll fall before you even get any

air because Arthur will step right off the ledge. Very frustrating. The hit detection is very clean with a

fair assessment of placement attacks. The game includes multiple weapons that Arthur can add to his

arsenal against evil. The games isn't very long but very tough like I mentioned. The well designed

game will bring most back time and time again to rake in an even higher score. Much like Ms. Pacman,

Ghost n Goblins is very addictive. I want Arthur action figures and Ghost n Goblin cereal; a new TV series

based on the original game and my own GNG wristwatch. Bring back the legend!

Longevity

Like mentioned above the games main draw is its point system where players fight to gain a

high score. By today's standards this would be boring for little Tommy who wants to see a neato

FMV every 10 seconds on his favorite RPG. Why should we whip the ass of these non-gamer punks

like little Tommy? Let's see him gain a high score in Ghost n Goblins. I bet the little punk couldn't even

get past the start screen. Don't miss this game. It'll go out of print soon, unless it already is, so go buy it

quickly. Send me your top scores if you wish and I'll post the top 5 here on the site.
