Campaign Update #82:
MORE SUGGESTIONS FROM A HOLLYWOOD INSIDER

Mary Ann aka Flowie -- Tuesday, 6 June 2000, at 10:34 a.m.

Our "anonymous" source (who henceforth shall reveal herself as our very own Barb Reedy!) has forwarded the following advice re the PFU Campaign from a real live TV producer of a currently popular series who is a personal friend. The producer would prefer to remain anonymous, but I have it on good authority that she knows what she's talking about!

- WILLIAM SCHMIDT. She is adamant about the fact that William Schmidt has the ultimate power to bring the show back or get a movie made!!! Prey is his creation, and he really has to be the one to fight for it. We should really push him in that direction at the con. Not that another producer can't come along and fight for it, but Mr. Schmidt's passion for his own baby has to play a part.

- PETER ROTH AT WARNER BROTHERS is a very, very nice man. She thinks that he may not be as hard headed as some network heads about resurrecting a show that came along before their time. This is normally a problem. A LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGN TO PETER ROTH WOULD BE A GOOD THING. It is also likely that WB is more financially capable of producing more Prey than Sci-Fi.

- AN AD IN VARIETY WOULD BE MAJOR!!!! A show that has been off the air for two years getting an ad in Variety would draw a HUGE amount of attention. The producer thinks that after the ad ran, she might even be able to talk to Peter Roth about it. IN HER OPINION, WOULD BE THE BIGGEST THING WE COULD DO.

- We should do a massive email campaign to Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly. She strongly believes that we will get some press from this, and everyone who's anyone in L.A. reads Entertainment Weekly.

- The producer really, really believes that Prey could become a theatrical movie. She thinks that the man who could make it happen is the guy who directed the latest Travolta movie (the sci-fi thing). Forget the fact that the movie flopped. She said he has an ENORMOUS amount of clout in Hollywood, and if anyone could do it, he could. She is going to see if she can get his address for us.

- Unless it's a theatrical release, we may have to forget about Debra Messing. It's going to be very hard for her to do anything at Warner Brothers, since she belongs to NBC. She's so hot right now that it's doubtful NBC would loan her out for a tv movie at WB, when she could be doing something for them during her hiatus and get the ratings for them.

- The source wants a full report after the con. Re the key campaign: it was worth it as long as someone in the industry got them. Watch this pace for further developments.

Many thanks to Barb fro this INVALUABLE information!

SO, OUR STRATEGY FOR THE REST OF THE SUMMER IS:

- Of course, at the con, we'll have the opportunity to encourage William Schmidt to get actively involved in the effort to get Prey back into production. However, we have to remember that he may have other projects on his plate, and be willing to accept his wishes.

- My suspicion that a LETTER CAMPAIGN TO PETER ROTH AT WB would be effective has (through no fault of my own!) been verified. His address is Peter Roth, President, Warner Brothers Television, 300 Television Plaza, Burbank, CA 91505. By all means mention the key campaign and throw in a key if you have one!

- VARIETY AD. According to the source, an ad would be especially effective after two years, so LET'S DO IT! We currently have $325 in the PFU account. According to the information I got from Gina, the other Prey Variety ads were 1/7th of a page, and cost $1255 each. We are entitled to a 25% discount due to a typo in the last ad, so the cost would be approximately $942.25 (although prices may have gone up in the meantime). I THINK IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT WE DO THIS, so PLEASE give serious consideration to sending what you can afford (it doesn't have to be a lot) so that we can run an ad A.S.A.P.! Contact MollieKelly@worldnet.att.net

- EMAIL CAMPAIGN to Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly. I don't have a email addy for him, but from the format of the addies of the online staff at the EW website, I would surmise that it's ken_tucker@ew.com. I have emailed a copy of a slightly revised Prey News Release to that addy, and it hasn't bounced back, which is a good sign! I would recommend that in your emails, you mention the PFU Campaign and the emergence of the new species of H. Persistens, which I think is the "newsworthy" part of the story. Once I have the "Prey dossier" ready to go, I'll send him a copy with a covering letter.

KEY CAMPAIGN

Here is my list of people who have sent keys. I'm proud to say that I'm absolutely confident that we have now sent more that 500 keys (565 according to this list–and probably more!). Congratulations to us on exceeding our goal! As Barb's "insider" said, it was worth it if someone in the industry got the keys, and Bonnie Hammer certainly did!

MISCELLANEOUS

- Shadow Man is co-ordinating a project to put together a giant Thank You card for William Schmidt. Information about this is posted on the PFU MB and the Sci-Fi MB. You may also want to fax a letter for Mr. Schmidt to be presented to him at the con through Jeanne (contact her directly re this).

- Genny asked me about scheduling a strategy session for the campaign at the con; I think we can probably discuss this at the jam session on Thursday.

- Probably many, many other things that I'm too scatterbrained to remember!
